Medical assistance is one of the biggest issues in Abkhazia. Rural clinics suffer from a lack of equipment and qualified staff, and people have limited access to information and services.
UNDP helped refurbish and equip maternity wards in Gali and Gagra hospitals and set up mobile labs that can go wherever they're most needed to provide testing for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and other transmitted diseases. More than 4,200 people all over Abkhazia have used these services throughout the year.
Read more about UNDP's work to provide better infrastructure, medical assistance and education to people in Abkhazia.
50 years since the end of steam on BR, and a good day out to catch up with old friends. A shame, though, all this 'diesel assistance due to fire risk', so I decided to, ahem, 'deal' with this one. With apologies to purists. 45690 Leander at Ribblehead, 11th August 2018.
3 July 2017. Padding: Women carry sacks of food airdropped by the World Food Programme and distributed by the NGO Oxfam in Padding, Jonglei, South Sudan.
The distribution is part of a Rapid Response Mission (RRM) that WFP, OXFAM, Save the Children and FAO are conducting to provide food, medicines, seeds and fishing kits to the population.
Fighting between Government and opposition forces last April pushed thousands of civilians to displace to Padding and Lankien, both still under opposition control. The massive displacement, that duplicated the population, brought an outbreak of cholera and a serious need of health assistance, drinking water and food distribution among the population, according to the local leaders.

With its partners, the EU provides assistance to meet the most urgent needs of the most vulnerable in Ukraine. EU’s humanitarian aid in Eastern Ukraine includes protection, health, shelter, food, livelihood assistance, water and education, provided to all in need, wherever they live. Thousands of Ukrainians travel across the line of contact every day to visit relatives, access services and find basic goods. Mayorsk entry-exit checkpoint (EECP) is one of the EECPs to enter the non-government controlled area (NGCA). EU Humanitarian Aid supports UNHCR and Premiere Urgence Internationale (PUI) to improve the conditions here by providing some basic services such as health care, shelters, water and sanitation equipment in Mayorsk EECP where approximately 7000 people wait in the queues per day to cross. In 2018, USAID launched the second-annual Digital Development Awards (the “Digis”) to recognize USAID projects that harness the power of digital tools and data-driven decision making. The Feed the Future Tanzania Land Tenure Assistance Project, implemented by DAI, was one of five winners chosen out of the 140 applicants.
Feed the Future Tanzania established the Tanzania Land Tenure Assistance activity to provide an affordable, transparent system of land registration. This activity uses USAID’s Mobile Applications to Secure Tenure (MAST) program to capture locally gathered GPS data, which is then mapped and registered by the District Land Office to provide official certification of village residents’ rights to occupy land parcels.
Recognizing the need for a way to track the sale and transfer of land rights, the project developed the Technical Register Under Social Tenure (TRUST) software, an open source program that allows District Land Offices and financial institutions to record all land transactions and even mortgages, creating a comprehensive and easily accessible digital record of all land rights.
Thanks to this new open source platform, USAID has transferred over 45,000 certificates documenting village land ownership in Tanzania to the TRUST database. This has opened the door for new agricultural investments and provided land owners with increased access to financial resources using their legal record of landholding as collateral. Building on the success, the program worked with the Government of Tanzania to ensure the sustainability of the open-source platform and seeks to expand its use in all districts, eventually using it as part of a national land management system.

In March, Muslim mobs devastated Christian families and churches in Asendabo, Ethiopia. Muslims burned down the homes of 30 Christian leaders, killed one Christian, wounded several others, and torched 69 churches, a Bible school, and a Christian orphanage. The heavy losses and the fear that the assault incited caused more than 10,000 Ethiopian Christians to flee their homes.
With our initial batch of aid, we were able to feed 1000 Christians affected by the violence. Two hundred families each received 110 pounds of teff (cereal used as a staple food to make injera/Ethiopian bread). Now that their immediate needs have been met, we are helping them begin again. Many of the victims are farmers, and when the Muslims destroyed their homes, they also destroyed their farms and killed any livestock they may have possessed. So far, we have purchased 1,200 chickens to help 240 affected families. With these chickens (roosters and hens), they will be able to start a small chicken farm and sell the eggs they produce as a means of income.
