With some extra assistance, Amtrak's San Francisco Zephyr hustles along near Hudson, CO around 1980. Providing the help is Union Pacific SD40-2 8096, one of the road's "Fast Forty" high-speed units. It was built by EMD in 1979 and was only about a year old when this view was taken. Trailing behind are a pair of Amtrak SDP40Fs, which by this time were on their way off the Amtrak roster. UP 8096 would be renumbered to 3605 in 1981. It would be retired in 2001 and sold to CEFX, who would number it 3159. The unit would be part of the CEFX lease fleet until the early 2010s when it was sold to Norfolk Southern, becoming their 3451. It was sold to LTEX in 2020.

I sprained my foot a couple of weeks ago and am hobbling around on my moonboot. So I asked for wheelchair assistance for all 4 flights to and from Malaysia. It has been unexpectedly wonderful to be assisted everywhere, as I don’t travel often and get a little overwhelmed with navigating busy airports.
If anyone has good ideas on how to make backgrounds, please leave a comment. I think this one looks good but has to much warm tones. I have limited space in my home, so I need to make small interchangeable scenes with roads, bushes/trees fence and backgrounds so they can be set up and taken down easily and stored away.
About 10 years ago I was complaining to my sister about how the little plastic cap was always coming off my spare camera battery. She pulled this green scrunchie out of her hair and said "use this", and it has been there ever since. Thank you darlin'.
In other news, now I'm mildly alarmed that my camera batteries are over 10 years old.

Memorial Day Weekend
Daisy and me in a Belk Department Store fitting room today. Daisy acted as my fitting room attendant for the day, as I needed to find a nice semi formal outfit for a wedding I will be attending in October. (One of my nieces is getting married in Tennessee.) So we spent the day making the rounds, trying to find the perfect dress. It's so nice having Daisy to help me in the dressing rooms. Not too long ago, I would've been totally on my own...but not anymore. 😉

An addition to two previous postings of this fateful day as I've just found the negative. I think I gave the original print to the man stood in the doorway, the late, great, Eddy Bright. A Guide Bridge man at the time, we both ended up at Manchester Victoria. Sadly missed. I've dealt with the fiasco of that day in the earlier postings, Eddy and I were just hitching a lift with some old hand Healey Mills men that didn't know how to drive class 56s....We're waiting for some banking assistance between Slaithwaite and Marsden. Rescue came from 47437 on a Newcastle to Liverpool class 1 train! We bailed out and got on 47437 before Eddy thumped the driver of the 56! Never had this trouble over Woodhead!

JAGO: “Paddy! Oh Paddy! Scout!”
PADDY and SCOUT: “What is it, Jago?”
JAGO: “Oh Paddy! Oh Scout! It’s poor Odessa! She has fallen into a swoon after the attack by the Russians on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa!”
PADDY: “I’m not surprised Jago. Odesa is our Odesa’s favourite city, and is the city she was named after. Poor Odessa!”
SCOUT: “This sounds like a job for Nurse Paddy!”
PADDY: “And Junior Nurse Scout!”
JAGO: “Oh please! May I help too. I feel very deeply for Odessa and I want to be of assistance too, although I have no nursing experience.” *Looks down sadly.* “But I must be able to be of some assistance.”
PADDY: *Thinks.* “I know! You can be Matron Jago!”
SCOUT: “Oh yes Nurse Paddy! That is a very good idea!” *Scratches head with paw. “What does a Matron do?”
JAGO: “Yes, what does a Matron do, Nurse Paddy?”
PADDY: “Well, they kind of oversee things, and do paperwork and matronly duty like things, Matron Jago.”
JAGO: “Oh well, I can do that! What shall I do Nurse Paddy?”
PADDY: “Well, Matron Jago, I need you to go and get ‘Sleeping Beauty’ from Daddy’s bookshelf. Briar Rose fell into a deep swoon, so we need to see what they used to try and help revive her, so we can pack them in our travelling first aid kit.”
JAGO: “Yes Nurse Paddy!”
SCOUT: “But Nurse Paddy, those things didn’t wake Briar Rose up!”
PADDY: “I know Junior Nurse Scout, but Briar Rose was under a magic spell. Odessa has just fallen into a swoon, so they should work for her.”
JAGO: “I have the book here, Nurse Paddy. Now it says that they, ahem…” *Clears throat.* “They ‘They threw water on her face, chafed her with their hands, rubbed her temples with the Queen of Hungary’s essence and put smelling salts under her nose.’”
SCOUT: “We don’t have any water that belongs to the Queen of Hungary, Nurse Paddy. What about some sparkling water from the refrigerator?”
PADDY: “Very good thinking, Junior Nurse Scout. I have the smelling salts here.”
SCOUT: “What are smelling salts, Nurse Paddy?”
PADDY: “Well, Junior Nurse Scout, they are things in a jar that help revive people. It has a very… individual scent, Junior Nurse Scout.”
SCOUT: “Ooohh! I want to smell them.”
JAGO: “I don’t think you should Junior Nurse Scout. I th….”
SCOUT: “Removes stopper from green glass jar and takes a deep sniff. “Oh YUCK!” *Quickly stuffs stopper back onto jar.* “That stuff stinks!” *Rubs muzzle with paw.* “How disgusting! Yuck! Yuck! YUCK!” *Sticks out cute little pink bear tongue.* “They stink worse than cats pee daisies!”
JAGO: “Well, that will help revive Odessa then, Junior Nurse Scout.”
SCOUT: “Oh! Yes of course, Matron Jago.”
PADDY: “Well, we’re about packed then, Matron Jago and Junior Nurse Scout.”
SCOUT: “Wait Paddy! We also need to pack lots of big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses to make Odessa feel better!”
JAGO: “Don’t worry, Junior Nurse Scout! I will help administer those to Odessa.” *Blushes pink beneath blue mohair plush.*
PADDY: “Right! Let’s go then Matron Jago and Junior Nurse Scout!”
JAGO and SCOUT: “Yes Nurse Paddy!”
PADDY: “Don’t worry Odessa, Otis and Pat! Help is on the way!”
My bears Paddy, Scout, Cousin Paddington, Bogart and Jago have made very good friends with three bears in Estonia: brother and sister bears Otis and Odessa, and Pat who is distantly related to Paddy and Cousin Paddington. Jago even has a bit of a crush on Odessa because they are both blue bears, and blue bears are quite rare. What Jago says is true, poor Odessa collapsed into a deep swoon after she saw that ber favourite city, Odesa, after whom she was named, was bombed by a Russian missile. You can see the picture here: www.flickr.com/photos/17898316@N00/52026172514/in/feed-25... or in the first comment below. Thank goodness Nurse Paddy, Junior Nurse Scout and Matron Jago. I’m sure they will help revive poor Odessa.
Jago is reading from my 1894 first edition copy of "The Sleeping Beauty and Dick Whittington and his Cat" illustrated by Arts and Crafts artist Robert Anning Bell, published by J. M. Dent & Company, at Aldine House in Great Eastern Street, London.
The bottle of smelling salts paddy has are sealed in a green glass jar which has only a scrap of its label left. It is a Nineteenth Century antique.
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
After getting stopped by the 308.3 HBD just west of Capac, MI., the conductor on CN M397 found a bearing that had failed and had already split open. Given the severity of the damage, the decision was made to leave the rear 3300 feet of their train on the main between East and West Imlay City to still allow for trains to pass. With the only place to access the car at a remote crossing, mechanical forces came into the field to replace the wheel set, and allow a crew from Flint to come and retrieve the balance so they can get the rest of the cars west.

"19 June 1905. A small group of motoring enthusiasts band together to warn fellow drivers about speed traps."
They opt to call themselves the Motorists' Mutual Association.
In response to the zealous police enforcement of driving restrictions, the group organised teams of cyclists who, through a combination of signals and salutes, assisted drivers to stay safe on the roads and avoid punitive penalties.
A month later, as the group established an enthusiastic following among the motoring community, they settled upon a new name (and it was a real keeper). The Automobile Association.
