Working with the DoF calculation for all images I made the following spreadsheet
DOF = 2CNU^2/f^2
In Focus = DOF^.5 for 45 degree angle
CoF (C) . . . . . . . . . 0.03
Apertures (N) . . . . 1.8 . . . . . . 3.5 . . . . . . 7.1
Distance (U) . . . . . 394
Lens (mm) (f) . . . . 50
DOF (mm) . . . . . . 6.71 . . . . . . 13.04 . . . . . . 26.45
@45 degrees . . 9.48 . . . . . . 18.44 . . . . . . . 37.41
. . . . . . . . . . . . 0 - 6/16" . . 0 - 12/16" . . . . 1 - 8/16"
The calculated DoF exactly doubles each time, 6/16, 12/16/ 24/16
I focused on the 5" line:
At f/7.1 - DoF is calculated at 1 1/2". The image looks acceptably sharp to me from around 4.5" to 6". Focus point was aimed at the 5" line so looks like this lens focuses almost perfectly.

I focused on the 5" line:
At f/3.5 - DoF is calculated at 6/16". The image looks acceptably sharp to me from around 4 13/16" to 5 2/16" which is about the 6/16" I'd expect. Focus point was aimed at the 5" line. I don't see the distinct 1:2 focus area front to rear on this one as much.

I focused on the 5" line:
At f/3.5 - DoF is calculated at 12/16". The image looks acceptably sharp to me from around 4.75" to 5.5" which is the 3/4" I'd expect. Focus point was aimed at the 5" line.
Requirement 4: Plants
A shot of the skin of a garlic bulk. Just a sliver of the whole bulb is in focus here. If you look at it full resolution, you can almost make out the individual cells.
My living Room... aka, the Mask Room.
Strobist info: Flash on camera (in fong) pointed at ceiling. Another flash on floor (Camera Left) PWd and pointing at ceiling. One more flash (camera Left) behind umbrella pointed at floor. All flashes gelled CTO. Flashes set to 1/4 power. 1/3 sec @ F/11.
Requirement 3: Bugs
Went outside looking for a cool bug or beetle and all I found was the lowly house fly (Musca domestica). Still, the resolution detail of the face and wing that are in focus is interesting if not a little creepy.
Requirement 2: Focus on the midground
The little bit of scarf on either side of her neck are in focus, in front and behind are blurred.
Does it meet the letter of the requirement? Yep.
Is it an interesting photo? No, I should have found a better idea for the mid-focus.
Multiple attempts... the natural light is what I ended up using and liking best. Had strobe in softbox with ambient down to get more direction, but didn't like it. So flat it is.
This one is a little abstract, but i think kind of cool. I was trying to get a picture of the couple playing with their dog when someone walked past the camera. Its interesting because the couple and the dog are still kind of clear while the rest is blurry and abstract.
Requirement 1: Focus on the foreground
The figurine's front eye is the focal point and is in good focus. The tip of her nose and a bit of her arm in the same plane are in focus as well. The rest of the figurine is out of focus.
Full resolution lets you see the grain in the wood around her eye.
I snuck up on this pretty lady while waiting around for some action before class started. She was positively thrilled about her new boots from Macy's. The chair is kind of in the way but I couldn't crop it without taking away a good portion of the Macy's bag. It reminds you that I snuck up on her however.
