Active Assignment Weekly - Beauty in the Ordinary.

Doing the customary weekend clean, dusting the furniture, I liked the view down and the repetetive pattern of these handles on this chest of drawers - a very ordinary and rather boring piece of furniture.

WIT:

Aperture priority looking down from the top of the chest of drawers. Minor contrast adjustment, cropped and flipped. I don't know why but I prefer it flipped for some reason.

For this photo, I used natural lighting from the window in my room. The girl is leaning against a wall about 8 inches from the window. I had her turn slightly away from the window so that the light would only catch one side of her face. This lighting created a soft yet intense mood. It's also a bit mysterious which is exactly what I was going for.

Bounced SB-25 off white ceiling to get big, soft specular highlight along curved edge of guitar. Grain of wood shows through nicely I think.

Alta Gracia, Dominican Republic

Workers at the Alta Gracia factory, set up as a "fair wage" factory recently by Knights Apparel, which is one of the largest suppliers of t-shirts and sweatshirts to colleges in the US. This factory is paying workers a living wage, about 3.5 times more than they are paid in other factories clothing factories in the DR.

The clothes are sold at a slightly higher price with tags explaining to customers that Alta Gracia (also the name of the clothing line) pays the workers more.

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly for the week of August 18-25th.

The assignment:

This week I would like you to take an item from inside your house, which normally doesn’t leave your house, and photograph it outside.

Restriction: no chairs, tables or food implements because they can be used outside.

Dare: show us something really unusual and creative.

Importantly have fun and try not to break anything :-)

WIT: It was raining for a few days straight (which is no longer typical for Colorado) so I took this painting of a mediterranean seaside village and placed it out in my yard. I liked the contrast of what was going on in Denver and what is protrayed in the painting.

Assignment - 1:

8. Avoid complete symmetry

This week's photo assignment was to take a photo of an animal, using only manual settings. I caught Zelda striking a pose.

I have to say, it's hard photographing a beige cat on a beige rug, and making it at all interesting. Luckily, I caught her blue eyes in this shot!

3/4/2010 - Blanche Hill broke a bone in her foot and has been hobbling around Centre's campus since. She is determined to ditch the crutches sooner rather than later. JAMEY PRICE

my wanna be actress daughter was my model for this assignment.

Even though I might look like I know what I'm doing, I'm actually still relatively new to editing. An advanced beginner might be more fitting than just beginner since I already have some ideas on how to edit photography previously. So for this image, I used Pixlr. I used the crop tool and used the bushes on both sides as my guide on where to crop. I also covered the screen window with black brush to create less distraction. Then I used some adjustment to get better lighting in the photo. After all that, I feel like this edited photo looks more vivid and and a little bit more detailed than before.

I (left) asked a close friend (right) to help me out with this assignment. He couldn't manually focus well on the 50mm prime, so I slapped him upside the head and switched to an autofocus lens for my portrait. Although, to be fair, I couldn't nail the focus on the prime half the time. The orchids we had for lunch were delicious though.

Ginger was a constantly moving target to try to capture for the portrait assignment of the photo silly class. She was quite a challenge to catch at a still moment as she explores the garden.
