Alta Gracia, Dominican Republic

Workers at the Alta Gracia factory, set up as a "fair wage" factory recently by Knights Apparel, which is one of the largest suppliers of t-shirts and sweatshirts to colleges in the US. This factory is paying workers a living wage, about 3.5 times more than they are paid in other factories clothing factories in the DR.

The clothes are sold at a slightly higher price with tags explaining to customers that Alta Gracia (also the name of the clothing line) pays the workers more.

A vibrant and cool Fall

Taken for the Active Assignment Group Weekly

Assignment: Viaduct

Dare: find a point of view that few others have found.

WIT: I was in Queens, NY on Mother's Day. I was right near the Whitestone Bridge, which connects the Bronx to Queens. So being that I had some time to kill I was able to capture some images. I used various techniques to achieve the vintage/grungy feel, and added some increased contrast and vignetting in LightRoom.

On assignment for Canned Creative, capturing images for a corporate website

Living in an apartment on the second floor helped me catch this moment of my cat, Sky, as the sun was setting. I was able to go half way down the stairs without her following me and take this photo.

These are logos I created. The first one is for lightning, the second one is for my friend, Brenna, and the third one is for flowers.

Public Education

Over the past three years I have been exploring educational institutions that act as pilot to class mobility. It is the American ideal that one can rise above their class if they work hard enough in school. Anyone can be president, or anything they wish to be. These structures, meant to be the building blocks of one's future, are the supposedly egalitarian basis for opportunity.

By photographing without human presence I hope to create a stage-like setting, so that it is up to the viewer to project their own ideas of how they might experience each area. Through these portfolios I hope to touch upon both the advantages and limitations of each education.

Assignment 52: Creating depth

"Select a scene that has one subject approximately 6 feet away from you, a second subject approximately 20 feet from you, and a third subject about 40 feet or more (even very far away) from you. Select an aperture that will result in all three subject being in sharp focus."

I'm still not sure about this one, as it seemed the fence might stop the eye. Maybe it's the quality of the light shining on the house that keeps that from happening. My neighborhood seemed overly cluttered for this compositional challenge. I kept trying, & I almost used this one:

This assignment turned out to be a difficult but very interesting challenge. Seems a straightforward exercise in composition, which it would be in drawing or painting. But finding these subjects in natural settings, at the approximate prescribed distances, in a pleasing spatial relationship fitting into camera frame, & without too much intervening clutter, turned out to be difficult. An additional unforeseen dilemma once one does manage to lead the eye into the scene, is it an interesting enough place for the eye to want to go?

Active Assignment Weekly: Minimalism/K.I.S.S

K. I. S. S. or Keep It Simple Stupid is a phrase adopted by 12 step groups to remind themselves to keep it simple. I've adopted it for use in my own life sometimes to remind me when things get complex and out of whack to focus on whats important and leave the rest alone. For this weeks assignment, I want you to do exactly that. Choose your subject, isolate it using selective focus, colour, composition or whatever means appeals to you while keeping to the objective of minimalism.

DARE: Try to find an existing minimalism composition outdoors to photograph.

WiT: I was in Oceanside, CA while on a business trip to the San Diego area this week. I took up the Dare this week... I found this tall palm apart from many of the others. I thought it against the bright blue sky fit the assignment really well

I live in a logging community, an old Mill town - Wood is everywhere, in every form. Being a tree hugger, I wanted to use this assignment to showcase the timeless beauty of wood.

I chose this; An old rocking horse that I bought at an Auction years ago.

Assignment: Portraits in different light

Tulipan, Tango jaluosi, 2 elementer, en helhed. Det var de kodeord, Ninna gav mig, som jeg skulle bruge til at male, hvad min opfattelse af det var.

The Assignment was to create a painting from the words: Tulip, a Unity, Tango Jealousy (the tune), 2 elements.

This page is so cool. So many different assignments are interacting to make this what it is. First the circles page, then the showering that made the dye soak throuhg lots of pages. Then the ripping on the left side and finally, the lines that I drew while on a bus.

Very, very interesting and fun results, in my opinion, what this journal is really about.

Assignment: ISO: For this photo, I used a higher number which made my photo darker.

Assignment One

I tried to use the 'triangle' rule in this photo, though not sure i've managed to capture it that well, but in the foreground you have the subject in focus in a 'triangle' shape and in the background the out of focus subject forms another triangle.

Harsh Midday Sun_from Above the Clouds

I wanted to be a bit more original by adding something extra. But then everyone did that,

In full leave and full flower as well - amazingly early, but the bees and butterflies are lovely it.

I rarely shoot any photos at f/32, but gave it a try for the Studio 26 assignment on deep depth of field. I shot it wider f/stops as well, but this one ended up being my favourite. With the 185mm focal length I still got some nice softness in the far background, but most of the flowers are in relatively sharp focus.
