"Look for images composed of vivid colours (highly saturated) as well as more muted colours. Look for complementary colours (those opposite each other on the colour wheel) and harmonious colour combinations. Consider images that consist of single colours and multiple colours. Think about balance, unity, dynamism and focus of attention when composing and editing your images."

The brief for PwDP Assignment Five is, apparently, oriented towards photojournalism - photograph an event and market the results to relevant publications. This series is my own response. The background is in my blog, here - stansocapwdp.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Assignment Five.
It relates to a major sporting 'event' of the summer - The Ashes Test Series of cricket matches between England & Australia - but also to my research of contemporary still life photography for Assignment Four; questions around the way photographers might respond to image-saturation in the digital/internet world; and maybe questions around the 'truth' of photographic images. The intended outcome is a series of large prints but, hopefully, these digital versions provide some sense of what is intended.
I'm dooing the lighting 102 now. so I hope you can give me one or two comments about the assignments

Active Assignment Weekly: Liquid in Motion
The Assignment:
For those of you who don’t like set-up, this will challenge you a bit, but I promise it’ll be fun and hopefully a good learning experience that will stretch your photography journey. I first learned about the relationship between lighting conditions, flash, aperture, and shutter speed when trying to shoot my son’s baseball games. Those learnings then extended to shooting water movement whether it was a water fight or shooting one of those cool water splash shots.
The Assignment : Shoot a picture that captures liquid of any type frozen in motion. It can be taken indoors or outdoors. The liquid amount can be a drop or a wave-full and the movement can be accompanied by any object or living being. Depending on the speed of your lens (i.e. shutter speed at a given aperture or vice versa) and availability of flash, you may consider taking the shot in outdoor lighting. Using a tripod will help immensely.
Restrictions: None, except no fabrication of liquid movement in post processing.
Dare: If you have not tried a water splash type shot before, I dare you to get that under your belt.
WIT: After reading of the hours you folks had spent on yours, the heckling neighbors, the broken flashes, even the wife driving full speed at the photographer, I decided to play it safe and go with what I knew. So, after assuring that the toilet was exceedingly clean, I flushed. I did use a tripod and shot in shutter priority...both outside of my norm. I also learned how to perform continuous burst shooting and played around with a halogen work light to adjust lighting. Then in PSE, I played with levels (on color...also new to me) and chrome filters, blue filters, and finally, a violet filter. The norm: adjust contrast, sharpness, and saturation. I applaud you splashers! It's been fun to see what you all presented! Maybe next time for me!
My first shot ever for the Utata Iron Photographer challenge project. The rules on this one: taken at night, check. Dramatic light source, check. Black and white, check.
Warped and twisted are my own additions. Check.
OK, so I'm doing this course on photography, hoping to take things back to basics and hopefully learn something. This is my image for assignment 2, which asks you to take an image of something from around your house in an artistic way. Not sure about how arty this is, but I like it. If you're interested, this is one of the ornamental elephants from the Elephant Parade charity.

Active Assignment Weekly - soft focus.
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION
Your assignment this week is to capture your images using a technique called "Soft focus". There are a number of different ways to achieve soft focus; including manual de-focusing, stretching a nylon stocking over your lens, using a diffusion filter, or post processing. The idea being that your image is soft and pleasing to look at. I know I imediately delete any shot thats not fully in focus, and this will be a challenge. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
WIT: One clear bowl of water, one CD in the bottom, and a few drops of vegetable oil... the autofocus wasn't picking up the oil drops (and neither were my aging eyes), so this was an outtake on an experiment that I want to try again in natural light. Shot under tungstun lights, 0.4 sec, f/2.8, ISO 800, curves adjustment and vibrancy addition in CS4, noise reduction, and sharpening (though I don't think that did a thing).
First assignment in my digital photography class. We had to try and mimic William Eggleston's style.
Assignment: Shutter Speed: For this picture, I used a fast shutter speed so the photo would be in focus. Then I had to turn up my ISO so the picture would be brighter.
I took this photo because for the most part I always have a small on my face. I like the trees in the background of my photo. Something I would change in my photo would be the glare on my face and making it less blurry.
Assignment 52: Cropping
This is a pedestrian-bicycle bridge, & I originally took the photo while waiting for a bicycle to come by, the week of the Bicycle Assignment. Had hoped to duplicate for the Sunburst Assignment, but the lighting conditions weren't amenable. So am recycling now, taking advantage of Max's indulgence to work on cropping an older photo.
I cropped the clutter of foliage & dark space on the right & some of the foliage underneath the bridge, tilting the image to emphasize the diagonal.
Your assignment is to capture the essence of fire and not damage your house like Redgum did when he did a similar assignment four years ago.
Restriction:Fire must be a part of the image..No smoke and mirrors..
WIT
Straight out of the camera. dark rainy night and a pyro fireman eager to volunteer :)
I had always loved to build contraptions and do puzzles so for my line assignment, I decided to build a contraption that emphasizes on line. I took out my wooden block kit that consists of 200 wooden planks and went to work on the coffee table for about 30 minutes. My contraption consists of horizontal and vertical planks stacked up in a way.
Once I was finished, I grabbed a large mirror to give my photo that endless effect. I then used two lamps as light so snap my pictures. This picture ended up being the best one but was too orange for my liking, so changed that on Photoshop. I chose black and white because it gives more focus towards the picture itself instead of the background.
My photo shows the element line by the horizontal planks running between the vertical planks. This line--along with the second set of horizontal planks above in the picture--create the rhythm along the length of the photo which creates the visual movement. There is also an implied line with the way I set up the support structure for the two ramps resting on top.
I liked that I used two lamps to create the shadows in this photo; however, I wish I could move the mirror so that it's more in the center.

block-printed platter back. sadly, it dried, so I'll fire this and use it for mosaic work and make a new one for this week's assignment.
