The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus

The Pacific Northwest tree octopus (Octopus paxarbolis) can be found in the temperate rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula on the west coast of North America. Their habitat lies on the Eastern side of the Olympic mountain range, adjacent to Hood Canal. These solitary cephalopods reach an average size (measured from arm-tip to mantle-tip,) of 30-33 cm. Unlike most other cephalopods, tree octopuses are amphibious, spending only their early life and the period of their mating season in their ancestral aquatic environment. Because of the moistness of the rainforests and specialized skin adaptations, they are able to keep from becoming desiccated for prolonged periods of time, but given the chance they would prefer resting in pooled water.

An intelligent and inquisitive being (it has the largest brain-to-body ratio for any mollusk), the tree octopus explores its arboreal world by both touch and sight. Adaptations its ancestors originally evolved in the three dimensional environment of the sea have been put to good use in the spatially complex maze of the coniferous Olympic rainforests. The challenges and richness of this environment (and the intimate way in which it interacts with it,) may account for the tree octopus's advanced behavioral development. (Some evolutionary theorists suppose that "arboreal adaptation" is what laid the groundwork in primates for the evolution of the human mind.)

Reaching out with one of her eight arms, each covered in sensitive suckers, a tree octopus might grab a branch to pull herself along in a form of locomotion called tentaculation; or she might be preparing to strike at an insect or small vertebrate, such as a frog or rodent, or steal an egg from a bird's nest; or she might even be examining some object that caught her fancy, instinctively desiring to manipulate it with her dexterous limbs (really deserving the title "sensory organs" more than mere "limbs",) in order to better know it.

Tree octopuses have eyesight comparable to humans. Besides allowing them to see their prey and environment, it helps them in inter-octopus relations. Although they are not social animals like us, they display to one-another their emotions through their ability to change the color of their skin: red indicates anger, white fear, while they normally maintain a mottled brown tone to blend in with the background.

The reproductive cycle of the tree octopus is still linked to its roots in the waters of the Puget Sound from where it is thought to have originated. Every year, in Spring, tree octopuses leave their homes in the Olympic National Forest and migrate towards the shore and, eventually, their spawning grounds in Hood Canal. There, they congregate (the only real social time in their lives,) and find mates. After the male has deposited his sperm, he returns to the forests, leaving the female to find an aquatic lair in which to attach her strands of egg-clusters. The female will guard and care for her eggs until they hatch, refusing even to eat, and usually dying from her selflessness. The young will spend the first month or so floating through Hood Canal, Admiralty Inlet, and as far as North Puget Sound before eventually moving out of the water and beginning their adult lives

APRIL FOOL'S DAY in SAN FRANCISCO is celebrated with the annual ST. STUPID's DAY PARADE which starts out at JUSTIN HERMANN PLAZA and winds its way through the Financial District. Absolute F-U-N !

The ST STUPID'S DAY PARADE went to 101 CALIFORNIA...where it was lunch hour and everyone shouted to the businesspersons...GO BACK TO WORK!

...and of course, the PARADE would not be complete without a visit to the cold black BANKER'S HEART in front of BANK OF AMERICA where folks tossed pennies at the black marble 'sculpture'.

OH the faces of the tourists and the businesspersons who didn't have the slightest idea of WHAT THE HELL was going on. Though many, to their credit, got into the fun & smiled, and whipped out their cameras for the copious photo ops.

I thought I'd make this my 10 random facts game post too. I was tagged my Charlotte (http://www.flickr.com/photos/charlottemorrall/) Tag more people to continue the game if you want to!

1. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland twenty minutes after my mom got to the hospital three weeks early. This is the first and only time ever been I've been early. I've been in a hurry ever since.

2. I believe part of me is really convinced that I can save the world. I literally make at least one unsuccessful attempt a day,

3.I love making random trips to cities with no plans. In fact, I don't really like plans beyond setting time away to "do something." I like to feel the moment and go with it. I don't really make plans until I actually am doing it. I suppose some would call that a commitment issue.

4. It is obscenely easy to make me passionate about anything. This is why I have signed up for boxing lessons, refuse to touch fur, dance around like a hippie at grateful dead tribute concerts, and you find me at various political protests that have no actual real relevance to me.

5. I used to play World of Warcraft. I've also played a random MMO alien game I found online since I was 15. Stfu, before my rogue pwns your ass, leroy. I'm a huge nerd. No doubt.

6. I love museums of any kind. I have to read every sign. It is almost a compulsion, but I absolutely love it.

7. I don't believe in fate and I believe love is a choice. However, nothing absolutely nothing happens by accident. Is it possible to deny fate yet believe in serendipity? Wikipedia might say no.

8. I've seen many take their first breath and their last. Indescribable. And nothing has ever humbled me more than a 500g baby. (Or kicked my butt harder)

9. I am deathly shy around large groups, even when its my family. It's something I've spent my life trying to overcome. People rarely believe me until they see it happen.

10. I always try to do the right thing even though sometimes I don't know what that is. I try to leave every person and place a little better than when I found it. Sometimes I wonder if I just make a bigger mess. ;)

Every April Fool's day Big Huge Labs likes to play a trick on us & tell us that all our photos made explore. They can't fool me, as I know I didn't go from 13 - 700 something over night! It's interesting to see that not a whole lot has changed in the last year, according to flickr's whacked out interestingness algorithm. I have a whopping five new (to my stream) photos that appear in my top 72 interesting photos according to flickr, as of the time I'm writing this - April 1, 2012. Strangely, I have three rose shots in a row, & a few new shots in the interesting line up, mostly I believe thanks to the foot & fetish lovers out there. Check out your scout posters on bighugelabs if you'd like to make one, it's pretty cool! 2015 APRIL FOOL'S DAY in SAN FRANCISCO is celebrated with the annual ST. STUPID's DAY PARADE which starts out at JUSTIN HERMANN PLAZA and snakes its way through the Financial District. Absolute F-U-N !

The parade goes to the SOCK EXCHANGE (Pacific Stock Exchange) where socks were exchanged and thrown in the air!

The ST STUPID'S DAY PARADE then went to 101 CALIFORNIA...where it was lunch hour and the marchers shouted to the businesspersons...GO BACK TO WORK!

...and of course, the PARADE would not be complete without a visit to the cold black BANKER'S HEART in front of BANK OF AMERICA where folks tossed pennies at the black marble 'sculpture'.

OH the faces of the tourists and the businesspersons who didn't have the slightest idea of WHAT THE HELL was going on. Though many, to their credit, got into the fun & smiled, and whipped out their cameras for the copious photo ops.
