To reach the glacier we had to walk across this field of broken black volcanic rock. We had already driven our hire car along a 4 km track across similar ground - lots of ups and downs, lots of twists and turns and more potholes than an English winter produces. We had already put on our climbing harnesses (they have a strong rope loop at the front so that our guide could more easily pull us out of any holes we might fall into!) and were carrying crampons and ice axes. By now comparing this with the previous image gives an idea of the speed with which the weather over the glacier can change (There was about 12 minutes between the two shots).

During the heat, under such difficult circumstances I described on the previous upload, shadow can be a real treat. A bench, placed in the shadow, where you can rest a while and drink some water - is heaven. Especially, when, like here, the bench is in deed dedicated to the weary pilgrim.
Film shoot in Mbale, Uganda - photo taken from our crew's van, when we were rumbling over the red earth, rushing to beat the light (and rain) and shoot a final outdoor interview for the day.
On the approach to Holmsley passage, a small stream is crossed (part of Avon Water) on one of the girder bridges on this section that escaped the cutters torch after closure.

Our approach to the formidable looking ramparts of Jebel Aklim, at 2531m the high point of our trek. At the time I don't think we realised how ominous the clouds were - after all this is Morocco and it hardly ever rains!
Anti-Atlas mountains, Morocco
towards our car .. these Etosha Pan Ellies are particular high and slender with short tusks ..
They are also often much paler as in other african regions, even some close to white ..

The stone and gravel excavated from here in the past had been used for many buildings around in Leeds. Today it is good for riding bikes around on, fly-tipping and lighting fires. Apparently all the machinery had long gone from here. Or had it?
