Representing the third generation of trains since the rump of the Isle of Wight’s train services were electrified in 1967, Class 484 004 is seen after emerging from St. John’s Tunnel on its approach to Ryde Esplanade station. As before, the rolling stock was sourced from London Underground, this time comprising former D78 units that were once employed on the District Line.
By January 2008 it was the morning train to Linghe that was almost always steam hauled and this was what decided us on pursuing the train on this day. It was always a dash to get ahead as it wended its way up the hill from Xiamiaozi and the last shot was usually on this viaduct at Qiaotou, if you were quick enough to get there in time. On this occasion we discovered that because it was cloudy, and the sun had not yet risen, there was hardly any light. 1/60sec at 800 asa was not ideal, and neither was slithering across the icy river to get into position. It was still worth it, especially as I shall probably never get another chance.
While crossing Pamlico Sound on the Cedar Island to Ocracoke ferry, we were followed by a large group of seagulls. They were busy catching fish that the props churned up and made for great photo subjects. In this view, I was reminded of stacks of airplanes staged along a glideslope on approach to a busy airport....the fact that the one in the back is all flared just made it even more apparent.

I saw faces in these storm clouds as they loomed over our lake yesterday afternoon. Maybe just a rugged old man, or-- is there a crying baby with hand extended next to the face of another man who seems to be in distress???

Whilst out alone taking photographs in the fog I noticed an elderly gentleman in the distance walking in my direction. I expected the usual chat about what I was taking photos of, but instead he approached spoke to me of Japanese woodcuts, the artists Hokusai, Hiroshige and the work of Aubrey Beardsley and Charles Renne Mackintosh.
On that quiet, cold road it was quite a surprise to me to encounter somebody who was a fan of the same artists whom had such a formative influence on me when I studied at college over twenty years ago and to bring them up without any prompting. We talked for quite a while about artists, of the different kinds of mists he'd encountered during his time in the Royal Air Force and the creative process in general. After a while we were interrupted by a dog who had ran ahead of its owner. The gentleman produced a dog biscuit from his pocket and fed it to the dog who ate it excitedly and then trotted on. After a while we said our goodbyes. He said he would probably see me up there again sometime.

Lewis ... Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas ... also Isle of Lewis, is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island and most northerly of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides of Scotland
The name of Stornoway comes from the Norse for "Steering Bay", an indication of the very early origins of the town. As the best natural harbour in the Western Isles it was an obvious focus for development, and Stornoway Castle was built as early as 1100 by the MacNicol family. The castle was later captured by a Viking called Leod, who founded the dynasty that later became the MacLeods of Lewis.
