"You dread the depths; it should horrify you, since the way of what is to

come leads through it. You must endure the temptation of fear and doubt,

and at the same time acknowledge to the bone that your fear is justified and

your doubt is reasonable. How otherwise could it be a true temptation and a

true overcoming!"

An "answer" if you will to yesterday's DJ Hero. Guitar Hero.

I have brazenly announced to all who know me that I have prayed for a cold winter this year - I was trying to give them fair warning to have their winter clothes ready and be prepared to be cold for awhile. We have had very little winter for the past several years here in Texas...my bones have been "hot' for too long. It's going to take a lot of snow to cool them down.

This is the view across the street this morning. It makes me VERY happy. Also, the added blessing is that I am off work for 2 weeks - this is my fall vacation - and there are not too many things better than laying in bed at 8AM with all your dogs, snuggling under the covers and watching the snowflakes fall outside the window - knowing you do NOT have to get up and go to work!!!! - of course, one does have to get up eventually and feed the birds, but that's ok.

Happy in Texas -

I marked a red line on the flywheel and illuminated it with my home-made LED stroboscope. The motor was powered by my bench PSU, and the preset on the motor speed control PCB adjusted to get the right speed.

Since the unit is used only for speech recording, this should be near enough. I can always re-set it later if I get a frequency test tape.

I hate this phone, but it made for a cool depth of field shot with my Dad in the background.

This was Canon's answer to a waning interest in SLR photography among the masses. Basically uses the same program exposure system of the AE-1, but combines a motor drive and the ability to use all the Canon FD lenses of the time.

What you sacrificed was ANY manual control. The only manual operation was focusing. The only exposure mode available was "Program".

This camera came to me free and I almost threw it out because the batteries had been in it for decades and were so corroded and done a fair bit of damage I thought.

Actually, I finally pulled the batteries out and found that the damage was confined to the battery compartment. I cleaned it up, put two AA's in it and it worked.

It has a large, bright, clear SLR pentaprism viewfinder that makes manual focus easy. It actually can do a pretty good job.

It's shown here wearing a 50mm F1.8 Canon FD from the same era.

It's pretty beat up, but it has a funky "modernistic" design that is growing on me. All angles and edges.

We'll see how it does when I shoot it. It's hard to test since I can't know what shutter speed it thinks it's using, lol.

This is really a point and shoot camera in an SLR body -- but probably every bit as good as a Canon AE-1 Program in program mode.

Edit: Checking the date codes revealed this was made in early 1986, not 1983 (the model release year) as I originally noted.
