Done for my Stop Motion Animation class at MICA. It was a pretty open and experimental sort of assignment.
I chose to go with something simple and a bit familiar to start with. The fish are painted in gouache, cut-out, and laid over a moving watercolor background. I shot this on multiple levels of plexi glass, with the background on one, and the fish on another. And goodness, lighting was a nightmare! The colors came out terrible on camera, and I don't have a decent program to adjust the colors right now, so it is what it is. I think with cut paper, it'd be easier the next time around to scan them and animate them on the computer, but it was a fun experiment nonetheless, and I thoroughly enjoyed the process. Who knows? I still have all the parts saved up, so I may give it another go some day :).

Fiona has created an animation in response to the poster from a Bruce McLean exhibition at Modern Art Oxford (or MOMA as it was then known) in 1975. She has responded to the reflected trees in the mirror and subtly changed the poster into a moving image.

I've been up for several days in a row, rendering out my final film. This is my last year of animation, and my graduate film was due this morning.
I'm completely finished. I will continue to tweak and polish it for submission to festivals, but for now, it's done, and I'm so happy with how it turned out!
I'll be uploading a 20 second preview sometime this week, and as soon as I can figure out how to upload the whole thing to a private storage site, it will be up as well for my flickr friends.
Thanks so much to everyone who's been so understanding and patient with me, when I've been late sending packages because I'm stuck at school, or slow to reply because I'm holed up in the studio. Every little bit really helped :)

This image shows the general 3d animation pipeline. The pipeline can very a bit depending on the project, but once you move through the pipeline it can be difficult to go back and make changes.

The sun illuminates the planet now at a lower angle. This means more shadows and therefore significantly less albedo compared to a good two months earlier. The inclination of the rings has also changed.
Celestron 14
I animated a walk cycle that does not appear in the reference video ( First Choice), as I felt like the video was to short and it wouldn't fit in 10 seconds. The walk cycle could've used more work on, but I have to admit that I didn't look at reference videos too much. The body movement looks kind of mechanical and it would definitely need some improvement. I believe that I did a good job with the anticipation when the character notices the object. I had some problems with the skinning, as when she does the mischievous gesture with the hands, the head is kind of too long and it looks uncanny. The leap that the elf does to get closer to the object is slower than the one in the reference video, but I think that it looks pretty well, as it gives it a cartoonny movement, as it is slow. When she leans down to grab the object there were some skinning problems that I encountered on the belt, as it was made as a separate object. Because of the mesh the knees don't look natural and I believe that it could've used more edge loops. Same goes for the elbows. The walk at the end could use more work as well but I believe that the head movement gives it a nice cartoony action as to 'mask'what she just did. Overall I am pleased with my animation though could use a little more work on, it is pretty good for a first try.

I chose this clip because it has a variety of movement, especially involving the arms and legs, which would be interesting to animate. The actor also changes the direction he is facing several times, so the animation would show more than just one side of the character. As the actor is wearing a mask, this clip focuses purely on body movement, this might make is hard to animate some areas, such as the head, of my own character as there is no distinct reference for head movement or facial animation.

I chose this clip because of the exaggerated arm movements and gestures showing strong emotion, although the scene shows interaction between two characters, the portrayal of anger/frustration is so apparent with the exaggerated acting that I feel it would still make sense as an animation of a single character. I think this would be a good clip to use as reference as there is a lot of different actions going on stopping it from being repetitive but it could also be quite challenging to do.

I thought this clip was interesting because of the tension shown in the body to make it look like he was stuck to an invisible field and then the change in this when he comes "unstuck" and pulled back towards it. Whilst there aren't as many varieties in movement in this clip compared to my other two, the movement is a lot less erratic and more controlled so could make a nice animation.
a silent animation of my dog philaby saying i'm huuun-gry. I have taught him to 'say' it and i'm working on getting a good recording or video of him for real. This was made from two photos, made into 4 photos, made into a movie.
