A day off from work and Dad and myself went into Cambridge to see Le Tour De France arrive and leave Cambridge. After 35 minutes and 5 full busses from Longstanton Park and Ride, the walk from Chesterton Job Centre to Parker's Piece started. We saw the sign in phase and the ITV4 courage. That could have been better as the adverts came on just as they were going through Cambridge.

A delegation of Canadian media artists visited the CoDE (Cultures of the Digital Economy) research institute in October 2010. Julie DuPont from the Public Art Program of Ottawa and digital artists Adrian Göllner , James Acres, Eric Chan and Nicola Feldman-Kiss (work only) were travelling with a Canadian trade mission that was visiting Prof. Terry Mughan at the Centre for Innovation in International Business at the Ashcroft International Business School.

Sam Rayner (co-director of CoDE ), Caroline Hyde (Business Development Manager for Cultural & Creative Industries), the three CoDE Research Fellows (Leah Tether, Seb Franklin and Frauke Behrendt) , David Ryan (Ruskin Gallery) and Julio D’Escrivan (Department of Music) welcomed the artists.

The ARU staff took turns in showing this delegation around the Anglia Ruskin Campus, including a tour of the Digital Performance Lab (DPL) and the Ruskin (Digital) Gallery. We had many interesting discussions around digital culture, public art and look forward to future collaborations between CoDE and these Canadian media artists and scholars.

The Hoffmann Manufacturing Company works steam engine at the Chelmsford New Street factory in 1917. The little saddle tank engine was brought to the factory by Henry Martin and was used to haul materials around the vast 50 acre site.

The houses you can see in the backgound are in Henry Road, where a V2 rocket landed on December 19th 1944 killing 38 people (the factory was the target)

This view is almost exactly from the present day Bishop's hall roundabout looking west towards Ransomes Way and the student accommodation of the Anglia Ruskin University.

Nearly 20 years since we started Uni and some former students returned back to Cambridge.

A young David setting a Heald 231 track grinding machine at the RHP (Ransome Hoffmann Pollard) manufacturing factory in New Street Chelmsford (UK) in 1970 .

This is on the line 2 grinding section right where the present day Spar supermarket is. (can you spot a trend here?)

A RHP publicity still from David's archives and is posted here with kind permission.

Dave is presented by social club secretary Percy Macdonald his brand new Vauxhall Viva HB saloon in 1969 at the RHP (Ransome Hoffmann Pollard) social club grounds at St. Fabiens Drive Chelmsford.

The car cost Dave just 6d as he had the winning ticket in the first ever RHP 'win a car' raffle.. ;-)

Donated to my photostream by friend and colleague Dave with kind permission.

An advertisment for Hoffmann roller bearing axle boxes from a 1952 edition of The Railway Gazette in my collection.

The Hoffmann Manufacturing Company was located in my home town of Chelmsford in Essex (UK) and arguably was the world leader in bearing manufacture. The company became Ransome Hoffmann Pollard (RHP) in 1969.

The company is long defunct with the huge New Street factory in Chelmsford closing on December 23rd 1989.

The River Chelmer as it approaches Chelmsford city centre. Taken from a footbridge over the river with Anglia Ruskin University campus behind me.

Continuing my series started in 2012 to chart the different seasons and to see if/how the river and surrounding area changes over the years.

Previous shots can be found in my Album 'River Chelmer' at www.flickr.com/photos/bruce82/albums/72157664248491881

A charming photograph of thirty one rather grim looking gentlemen of the Hoffman Manufacturing Company Works Council at their New Street Works in Chelmsford (UK) in about 1912.

Interesting to see the popularity of moustaches in those days!

The Hoffmann Manufacturing Company was founded in 1898 and were the early innovators of bearing manufacture. The Hoffmann Company were for decades a major employer in Chelmsford Company along with nearby Marconi Company. The Hoffmann Manufacturing Company later became RHP (Ransome Hoffmann Pollard) in 1969.

At the time of this photograph the company employed around 4,750 workers at its New Street factory.

The RHP/Hoffmann Manufacturing Company is long defunct with the New Street Works completely closing on December 23rd 1989 after years of decline. The location of this photograph towards the rear of the old factory near the River Chelmer is now occupied by the Anglia Ruskin University.

'Exploring Mobile Phone Music and Sounds' was an informal CoDE gathering for those who are interested in using mobile phones for making music and sounds, from a theoretical, practical or aesthetic point of view. We were playing, experimenting, sharing ideas and discussing. Great fun!

Organised by Frauke Behrendt and Julio D'Escrivan
