The glacier that runs from Jungfraujoch is the Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher).
It is the longest glacier in the Alps, stretching about 23 kilometers (14 miles) from Jungfraujoch down into the Aletsch region of the Valais. The glacier is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and plays a crucial role in the region’s ecosystem.
The Aletsch Glacier is fed by smaller glaciers, including the Ewigschneefäld, and is flanked by peaks such as the Jungfrau (4,158 m), Mönch (4,107 m), and Eiger (3,970 m). However, like many glaciers worldwide, it is retreating due to climate change.
The Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher) begins at Jungfraujoch.
At Jungfraujoch (3,454 m), the glacier originates from the Ewigschneefäld (Eternal Snow Field), a large snow-covered plateau between the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Trugberg mountains. From there, the Aletsch Glacier flows down into the Aletsch Arena in the Valais.
It is the longest and largest glacier in the Alps, extending about 23 km (14 mi) and covering approximately 79 square kilometers. It plays a significant role in the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a major attraction for visitors exploring the region.
The best viewpoints are from the Eggishorn, Bettmerhorn, and Moosfluh.
The best viewing points from near Fiesch are at Eggishorn (2,927 m) – which offers the most complete panoramic view of the entire Aletsch Glacier from its source at Jungfraujoch down to the Massa Gorge.
You can get there by taking the Fiesch–Eggishorn cable car via Fiescheralp.
Bettmerhorn (2,647 m) is another fantastic viewpoint, slightly lower but still offering a sweeping view of the glacier.
You can get there via a cable car from Bettmeralp.
Moosfluh (2,333 m) is a lower viewpoint but still a great place to see the Aletsch Glacier.
You can get to Moosfluh by cable car from Riederalp.
Summary of Viewing Locations:
At Jungfraujoch, as this photo shows, you stand on the glacier itself, but the view is more about being on the ice rather than seeing the full length of the glacier.
Belalp is another great viewing point, but its further away from Fiesch. If you want the classic postcard view of the Aletsch Glacier, Eggishorn is the best option!

The hiking trails just after a decent snow storm can be tricky to navigate but the views are really worth it when you get away from the tourists who don't wander around but stand by the roadside. There were plenty on this day. Nothing ventured nothing gained....
It was still snowing in this shot. Ran out of lens wipes. Bummer...
Thats Ngauruhoe in the background.
Wingällen (Gross and Chli Windgällen) is a mountain massif above the Reuss Valley, Canton of Uri, Switzerland. I took the picture, when hiking on the so called "Via Gottardo".

Piz Riein (2762m), Piz Fess (2880m) and Piz Signina (2848m) in early evening light.
The peaks of the Signina range are not very high, but I consider them rather impressive nonetheless. The peaks are part of the Lepontine Alps and separate the valleys Val Lumnezia and Safiental.
The ragged peaks look a bit like the spine of a gigantic and long petrified dinosaur. Or maybe that's just my imagination :-)
They are not as high or as famous as the tripplet in the Bernese Oberland but almost as beautiful: Piz Ela (3339m), Corn da Tinizong (3173m) and Piz Mitgel (3159m).
Les Drus (3754m), Mont Blanc Massif, Chamonix.
I experimented with a tilt/shift effect on this one. What do you think?
A breathtaking view of the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites. The hiking trail winds below the towering cliffs, inviting adventurers into one of the most stunning alpine landscapes in Italy.

To stand here on the Jungfraujoch Viewing Deck overlooking Europe's longest Glacier had long been a bucket list objective but to do it at near 37 degrees Celsius was not quite how I envisaged it happening.
With the Aletsch Glacier shrinking daily sadly it may not be an option for future generations.

Over the summer months, the boat service with the highest locations in Europe transports passengers on Lake Sils (Engadin, Switzerland) at an altitude of 1,800 m. Starting in Sils Maria and ending at Maloja the boat crosses Lake Sils in around 40 minutes.

During the 2009 Marmotte cyclosportif, the climb up the Col du Galibier was enlivened by the sounds of thunder from down the valley. When I reached the col I took this shot of where I had just come. You can make out the road as it disappears into the distance. On it was a continuous line of slow moving cyclists. The skies above were looking ominous. When there was clap of thunder from overhead, I decided that the top of climb was not the best place to be. I then set off on the bumpy 42km descent to Alpe d'Huez.
A breathtaking view of the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites. The hiking trail winds below the towering cliffs, inviting adventurers into one of the most stunning alpine landscapes in Italy.
If you look closely, you’ll spot tiny human figures on the trail — a subtle yet powerful reminder of how grand and awe-inspiring the Tre Cime di Lavaredo truly are. The scale is almost incomprehensible without this human reference.
Col du Plan and Aiguille du Plan (3678m) in the foreground, Aiguille Vert (4122m), Grande Rocheuse (4035m) and Les Droites (4000m), seen from the ridge leading down from Aiguille du Midi. Chamonix, France.
Over the clouds: Crena Martin (2727m) with Piz Cavistrau Grond (3252m) and Cavistrau Pign (3220m) behind it. In the background the Mountains on the border from Grisons to Ticino. Seen from Piz Vorab Pign (2897m).
One of my very favourite light hikes leads from Falera up to Alp Schnaus, Ladir and back to Falera. Last time I did it, the weather was something of a mixed bag: A somewhat murky sky killing most of the colours in the landscape and a bit of haze to blur details. But then again, I liked those little wisps of cloud floating around Piz Aul (3121m).
I tried to process the picture in black and white but ended up with the coloured one – the b/w version had a strange artificial look about it.
The Augstbordhorn (2972m) is a fantastic vantage point. Looking to the south, you can see quite a lot of 4000-meter-peaks:
The first group on the left are Fletschhorn (3982m), Lagginhorn (4010m) and Weismies (4017m).
The second group is the Mischabel Group with Balfrin (3736m) between Balfrin Glacier and Ried Glacier, Ulrichshorn (3925m), Dirruhorn (4035m), Hohbärghorn (4219m), Nadelhorn (4327m), Dom (4545m) and Täschhorn (4491m).
Behind the Täschhorn and above the Matter valley emerges the Monte Rosa Group: Nordend (4609m), Dufourspitze (4634m), Liskamm with its three peaks (4527m, 4417m, 4479m), Castor (4223m), Pollux (4092m), Breithorn (4159m) and the Klein Matterhorn (3883m).
To the foreground again: The sharp and glaciated peak right of Klein Matterhorn is the Brunegghorn (3833m). The highest peak of that group is the Weisshorn (4506m) with the rocky needle of the Grande Gendarme (4331m) to the right, as well as Bishorn (4153m) and Tête de Milon (3693m).
The grayish-brown peak on the far right is the Schwarzhorn (3201m) which can be reached from the Augstbordhorn via the Augstbordgrat (the arrete in the foreground with the little snow fields) and the Dreizehntenhorn (3052m).

Weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Shortly after taking this shot, the scene vanished in a thick cloud and never reappeared that day. With visibility tending to zero, I skied down to lower slopes and enjoyed a mildly sunny afternoon…
