Water fountain with Venus Temple in the background, Linderhof Palace and Gardens, Ettal, Bavaria, Germany

Some background information:

Linderhof Palace is a royal mansion in southwest Bavaria near Ettal Abbey. It is the smallest of the three palaces built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria (who was also named "The Fairy Tale King") and the only one which he lived to see completed. His other two palaces are Neuschwanstein and Herrenchiemsee.

King Maximilian II of Bavaria, the father of Ludwig II, had a hunting lodge on the same spot which Ludwig II knew, because he had often accompanied his father on his hunting trips. When Ludwig II from the reigning House of Wittelsbach became king in 1864, he inherited the so-called "Königshäuschen" from his father and predecessor, and in 1869 began to enlarge the building. In 1874, he decided to tear down the old hunting lodge and rebuild it on its present-day location in the park. At the same time three new rooms and the staircase were added to the remaining U-shaped complex, while the previous wooden exterior was clad with stone façades. The building was designed in the style of the second rococo-period. Between 1863 and 1886 a total of 8.4 million marks was spent for constructing Linderhof, which is the equivalent of about 134.4 million € today.

Although Linderhof is much smaller than Versailles, it is evident that the palace of the French Sun-King Louis XIV, who was an idol for Ludwig, was its inspiration. The staircase, for example, is a reduction of the famous Ambassador's Staircase in Versailles, which was copied in full at Herrenchiemsee. Stylistically, however, the building and its decor take their cues from the mid-18th century Rococo of Louis XV, and the small palace in the Graswang Valley was more directly based on that king's Petit Trianon on the grounds of Versailles. The symbol of the sun that can be found everywhere in the decoration of the rooms represents the French notion of absolutism that, for Ludwig, was the perfect incorporation of his ideal of a God-given monarchy with total royal power. However, such a monarchy could no longer be realised in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The bedroom was important to the ceremonial life of an absolute monarch; Louis XIV of France used to give his first and last audience of the day in his bedchamber. In imitation of Versailles, the bedroom is also the largest chamber of Linderhof Palace. By facing north, however, the bedroom at Linderhof Palace inverts the symbolism of its Versailles counterpart, showing Ludwig's self-image as a "Night-King".

The location of the palace near Ettal Abbey again presents another interesting point. Because of its architecture Ludwig saw the church of the monastery as the room where the Holy Grail was preserved. This fact connects the idea of a baroque palace to the one of a medievally looking castle such as Neuschwanstein and reminds of the operas of Richard Wagner whose patron Ludwig was.

For Ludwig the second most important room at Linderhof Palace was the Hall of Mirrors, which used to be some kind of living room for him. He enjoyed sitting in the niche, sometimes reading there the whole night. Because Ludwig II used to sleep in the daytime and stay awake in the night, the mirrors created an unimaginable effect for him when they reflected the light of the candles a thousand times. Furthermore, the parallel placement of some of the mirrors evoke the illusion of a never ending avenue. The most essential item in the Hall of Mirrors was a candelabra with 16 branches, which was completely made from ivory. Already at that time its worth was immense.

Another interesting room at Linderhof Palace is Ludwig’s dining room with the so-called "table be laid" (In German: "Tischlein deck Dich"). This table was a disappearing dumb-waiter, so to say, where Ludwig used to dine alone. The table could be winded up from and down to the domestics floor below, where the servants had to lay the table for at least four persons because it is said that the king used to talk to imaginary people like Louis XV, Mme de Pompadour or Marie Antoinette while he was eating. For Ludwig II enjoyed the imaginary company of those people and admired them. You can find portraits of them in the cabinets, and scenes of their lives everywhere in the palace's rooms.

Also rather amazing are the gardens that surround Linderhof Palace. They are considered one of the most beautiful creations of historicist garden design, designed by Court Garden Director Carl von Effner. The park combines formal elements of Baroque style and Italian Renaissance gardens with landscaped sections that are similar to the English garden.

Visitors can also have a look at the Marrocan House or the Moorish Kiosk there. The latter one’s most notable piece of furniture is the so-called Peacock Throne. But probably the most fascinating "building" in the gardens is the Venus Grotto. It is a completely artificial cave with a subterranean pond girded by fake stalactites. The Venus Grotto was built for the king as an illustration of the First Act of Wagner's "Tannhäuser". Ludwig liked to be rowed over the pond in his golden swan-boat but at the same time he wanted his own blue grotto of Capri. Therefore 24 dynamos had been installed and so already in the time of Ludwig II it was possible to illuminate the grotto in changing colours. Wagner’s operas were also performed there for Ludwig solely – with a complete orchestra and professional opera singers, while the king was watching the play from different alcoves in the cave, which were made to look like natural rock shelters but in fact were Ludwig’s personal loges from where he could watch the operas from different angles.

Well, it cannot be denied that Ludwig II was a pathetic and lousy king. He hardly ever cared for his official duties and his kingdom in general. Instead he was mainly interested in building fantasy worlds for his own personal use. Just like Linderhof Palace his other building projects costed vast sums of money which he took from the Bavarian citizens, resp. from their taxes. By doing this he almost bled Bavaria to death. In 1871, Ludwig received a donation of 4 million thalers (the equivalent of about 200 million € today) for his agreement to the proclamation of William I, King of Prussia, as the new German emperor. This money enabled him to carry on the construction activities at his different personal building projects.

Although Ludwig was engaged to Sophie of Bavaria, he was never married. Today it is quite evident why. Based on numerous letters to his aide-de-camp Paul von Thurn und Taxis it can be assumed that he was homosexual. You may also know that in 1886 Ludwig II died at the age of 41, presumably by committing suicide when walking into the waters of Lake Starnberg. However, there are still rumours that he was murdered. If you would ask me if he was mentally ill, I would answer: "Yes, in my opinion he was." But due to his splendid, fanciful and also unhappy life his is still shrouded in myth. Not least because of this fact Linderhof Palace is visited by more than 500,000 people from all over the world each year. Unfortunately it is not permitted to take photos inside the palace.

I captured this photo of the Blatten-Belalp cable car as it was heading uphill. Surrounded by the beautiful, picturesque scenery of the village of Blatten in the Swiss canton of Valais.

Hier habe ich die Seilbahn Blatten-Belalp fotografiert, als sie gerade bergwärts fuhr. Eingebettet in die wunderbare, malerische Umgebung des Dorfes Blatten im Wallis.

A peaceful mountain chapel overlooking the valley near Berchtesgaden, Germany.

Captured during blue hour as soft evening light brushed the snow-capped Alps and the last glow faded over the Bavarian peaks.

A quiet reminder of solitude and faith surrounded by the calm of spring and the vastness of the mountains.

From afar, the Southern Alps stretch like a majestic spine across the horizon—snow-dusted, rugged, and awe-inspiring. Their distant silhouette rises above the rolling hills and open plains, forming a powerful contrast between serenity and grandeur. A landscape where the scale of nature quietly humbles you, and every view feels like a living postcard from New Zealand’s South Island.

This photo shows Lac du Diable, located in the Vallée des Merveilles within Mercantour National Park. The lake is situated at high altitude, surrounded by rocky terrain and steep mountain slopes. The water had a distinct green color at the time of capture, likely due to mineral content or algae presence, contrasting with the surrounding rocks and sparse alpine vegetation. The landscape features large boulders, jagged peaks, and grassy patches typical of subalpine environments. The weather was clear, with good visibility and minimal cloud cover.

One of my favorite places.

A golden forest of larches blankets the lower slopes as the rugged peaks of the Croda da Lago group rise sharply against a softly glowing sky. Captured in the Dolomites during the fall season, this view highlights the striking contrast between the warm autumn tones and the cool, dramatic limestone cliffs.

Captured in the heart of Valmasque Valley within Mercantour National Park, this solitary Alpine ibex stands proudly on the rugged terrain. Surrounded by boulders and dry alpine grass, it gazes toward the lens with quiet strength. The scene reflects the raw beauty and resilience of wildlife thriving in high-altitude environments. A perfect glimpse into the untamed soul of the French Alps.

In the pristine heights of Valmasque Valley, a chamois stands poised on a grassy ledge, overlooking the rocky slopes and shimmering alpine lake below. With its curved horns and agile frame, this mountain dweller embodies the grace and resilience of alpine wildlife. The clear blue sky and rugged terrain frame a moment of quiet majesty in Mercantour National Park—a place where nature reigns and solitude speaks.
