The pretty chapel called Maria Hilf on Stoos was constructed for the alpine farmers and their families in 1721. The farmers and alpine people visited the Sunday religious celebrations where they could get compassion and help. A priest from Schwyz was obliged to climb all the way to Stoos every Sunday. He had to have an empty stomach up the steep climb, because of an old law in those days. After the holy mass, and having given the holy sacrament to his believers, he was obliged to leave the mountain world and return to monastery in Schwyz. After a fire which destroyed the chapel, a new one was constructed in 1932.

I went exploring today, aiming for Alpine Lake (part of the Mt. Tamalpais watershed), since I had never been there before. The drive is fun, on a twisting and winding road over the mountain's foothills and through forests of tall redwoods. The best part about the lake is that there are no noisy motor boats or crowds of vacationers. I also found the dam that created the lake and drove across the top of it, holding my breath on the narrow road, not daring to look at the deep water on one side of the car and the shear drop-off on the other. Gulp!

I used CS5's HDR toning to learn how it works. It's really a way to do faux HDR from one image. I found the adjustments a little bizarre at first but eventually found the tweaks that made this turn out looking richer but still fairly natural.
