Protein sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree of dopa decarboxylase.Protein sequence alignment of dopa decarboxylase (A) and phylogenetic analyses (B) were conducted by the neighbor-joining method using the MEGA4 program with the C. elegans tyrosine decarboxylase as outgroup. The percentage of replicate trees in which the associated taxa clustered together in the bootstrap test is shown next to the branches. The scale bars indicate the estimated evolutionary distance in the units of the number of amino acid substitutions per site.

Okay... this is what happens when your alignment gets knocked WAY off by serious alligator curbing, and you're hell bent on finishing the race. 5 out of 7 layers are gone, and this is the tire DEFLATED

I enjoy photographing seals, so sand is my gear maintenance nemesis.
I always use a rain cover to protect my camera and lens and that helps a lot, but sand and wind do what they do. Thus, my focus rings and tripod collars end up crunchy after a while.
The only way of dealing with this that I have found is to use a vacuum cleaner pressed against the gaps around the focus ring or collar and to work my way around while gently rotating the ring. It can take a little while to get it all out, but it has always worked for me. I should say that most of my lenses are L series with weather seals, so the grit is most likely simply caught under the edges of the focus rings and hasn't gone into the lens body.
Tripod collars are often removable, so this part can be easier and much quicker, but not so with the RF 200-800. I couldn't find any info on actually removing the collar, so I investigated......
Long story short is that I removed the 2 small covers on the collar so that I could see how it's attached and then decided to leave it on and use my vacuum cleaner the same way I've described above for focus rings. It worked.
For those who want to know how the collar is attached, read on.
Those 2 small covers are glued on with a flexible glue of the type used to hold laptop feet in place. I used a ballpoint pen to rotate the covers back and forth and the glue gave way. The covers are flat, so I will need to buy some glue to put them back.
One of the covers is located where the tripod foot comes off the collar. This one gives access to 4 pairs of post and collar type bearings, held in place with the usual small Japanese type cross head screws and which sit in a slot in the collar. The other cover appears only to give access to an alignment mark for a sprung steel pressure collar which I guess is the surface that the tension knob presses on to hold the lens in place.
If you wanted to remove the tripod collar, you would need to remove the 8 screws holding the bearings and go from there. It may come straight off, or there may be some further fiddling required with that sprung steel via the other cover. Either way, I would say that this is a maintenance activity, rather than an option to remove the collar. Personally, tripod collars are an important part of my photography, so wouldn't want to use the lens without it.
IMPORTANT - if you are thinking of trying to remove the tripod collar you do need to buy the correct screwdrivers. Canon use a Japanese type (JIS) cross head. It's Not the same as Philips or pozidrive and you will damage the screw heads without the correct screwdriver.
All the best and happy gear fettling,

Don't think this is part of the Kermario alignment but I was attracted by this forest surrounding the few big rocks close by the Kermario alignment.

Former Pacific Hwy alignment through Murwillumbah bypassed with the opening of the Chinderah - Yelgun deviation in 2002.
The NSW Main Roads Department had to build this "cow bridge" when a short deviation was made through this cutting back in the 1950s or 60s, as the new road bisected a dairy farmers access. It looks like it is still used to herd the cows to and fro.
