Alert Bay ist heute eine der bedeutendsten Orte in Kanada, um Kultur, Leben und Geschichte der Ureinwohner spürbar zu erleben. Was in unseren Breitengraden (sicherlich durch Karl May beeinflusst) gemeinhin als Marterpfahl bekannt ist, kann in Alert Bay in beeindruckender Zahl besucht werden. Allerdings empfiehlt sich hierbei eher der Begriff Totem-Pfahl.
Sage grouse, as seen in our backyard. All summer these birds have been regular visitors, mother and her six chicks. The young have grown quickly, and the family grazes by our windows once or twice daily.

Their counterparts at PDX chased us down the runway at the end of my trip. Our flaps wouldn't deploy... We flew around Portland for a while, probably trying this and that, talking to maintenance on the ground, burning off a bit more fuel. We landed very fast and used every inch of runway to stop. Fire trucks like this escorted us to the gate, maybe keeping an eye on our hot brakes.
I like the chipmunks cause there's one that lives somewhere along the left side of our house. So I often see it running past our garage to get to our neighbors. Whenever my kids see it doing this they try to corner it but with no success thus far. ;-p
