I've had this piece of ground lying around for awhile so I decided to make an ODST vignette.
This is probably the first SNOT vignette I've done.
Unfortunately Mystic suffered a fire in the downtown area last night. More unfortunate yet, one life was claimed and several people were severly injured requiring medivac to Bridgeport.
Fire is a major concern in the downtown, having repeatedly burned down sections of the downtown. The old wooden buildings are built close together and fire often spreads rapidly between them. The local fire departments are very good and very quick to respond. This fire could have spread to the building directly behind which contians three retil businesses quite easily as the two buildings are less than five feet apart along their longest dimension. The fire squads also saved the front of this building from any apparant fire damage - quite a feat.
There is a reason why the fire departments around here are featured and hailed in every parade.
Once I got out to Mr. D's to shoot wildlife he regailed me with tales of some of Mystic's more infamous fires. He's over 90 now but pretty sharp, and loves a good chance to talk about Mystic, history, sailing, his adventures in his youth and a bit about his family.

This is an attempt at a (deliberately cartoony) HDR image made using shots of the aftermath of the Ray's Hell Stunt Show at the Perth Motorplex.
Early this morning, a house burned down north of Marble Falls, TX. Now it's time for "mopping up."
This is a panorama I took with my Treo.
This is the aftermath of today's networking meeting. It's whats left on the table. The waitress already cleared most of the dishes.
ODC on the table
My tears have been my food day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
"Where is your God?"

I was watching the local TV weather guys around midnight a couple of nights ago (they had been on pretty much non-stop all day) when they posted a tornado warning with a projected path that ran right over my head. I put the kitties in their carriers and put those in the bathroom (the designated "safe place"), then the power went out as the storm got rowdier. I hung out in the hallway watching the light show and listening to the tempest rage until eventually things calmed down and the power came back on.
The next morning I went out to look around and was startled to find my dear maple, snapped like a toothpick. It's only about twenty feet from the house and I remember discovering it very soon after we built the house 19 years ago when it was just a little thing, maybe twelve feet tall. I treasured it and planted hostas, daffodils and other plants near it. It's so strange - I haven't found any other dramatic damage from that weather event, but certainly something was here!
