Beef Lungs and Tracheas

In Argentina (like in most other parts of the world), you can buy any organ of a beef at the butcher store.

Did I mention that being vegetarian is illegal in Argentina? (just kidding!)

I took this photo at the Mercado Central in Salta (Argentina).

In developed countries, many people do not want buy those organs, so they are processed industrially, shredded and turned into sausages, meat-loaf or dog food.

The inside of the Nautilus Submarine art car is made with the same amazing attention to details as the outside. There is even a working night-vision periscope!

“The Nautilus” by Five Ton Crane, a San Francisco Bay Area art collective, is a 25 foot long art car inspired by the submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. It has a water cannon and a night vision periscope, but its most awesome detail is a 4 foot diameter door with a motorized brass aperture window shade and a squid-themed keyless entry system (video). The door was designed and built by artist Dr. Alan Rorie.

Hindu pilgrims gathering before dawn on the bank of the Ganges river, near the Sangam, during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India)

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

This was the early morning of January 27 (a full-moon night, called Paush Purnima), one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath. After a 7 km night walk, I arrived at the Sangam area at about 3am, early enough to be well positioned to take a few good photos in this gigantic crowd. The yellowish color is caused by the dim sodium-vapor street lights.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

The Tehri dam is the highest dam in India and one of the highest in the world.

It is hard to imagine that right there, on this photo, deep under the lake, just at the bottom on the dam, there is a submerged city (Tehri, now called "Old Tehri") that was the provincial capital, with a population of about 25,000. The people from Old Tehri have been relocated to New Tehri, a planned city built on the mountain above the dam.

The Tehri Reservoir (the lake on the left) now fills-up a large part of the Bhagirathi valley, one of the headstreams of the Ganges.

The Tehri Dam was (and still is) a very controversial project, as it flooded two valleys resulting in the destruction of numerous villages and a town (Tehri), all now submerged, and forced the relocation of about 100,000 people.

A remote controlled helicopter with a remote controlled video camera was shooting aerial footage of Burning Man for a documentary.

The high-tech electrical RC Heli belongs to Copter Kids, a small company that specializes in shooting aerial footage from Remote Controlled helicopters, which is much cheaper than using a real helicopter and allows close shots and fast motions that cannot be done with full-size helicopters. Their equipment is fully customized and electrically powered, with for very low-noise operation. Their Heli can fly for about 8 min on a Lithium battery. One person pilots the Heli, and another person controls the camera, which broadcasts real-time video to a monitor on the ground.

DSC06595 - The End of the Road - Darjeeling Road Landslide (India) by Loupiote

The road to Darjeeling (India) comes to an abrupt end due to a major landslide that occurred in June 2010.

The road now stops abruptly at the top of a very high almost vertical cliff (100 meters or more). A large area of this very steep mountain side where that road was built went crashing down in the valley below. Some houses were very close from the landslide, but no house was destroyed and no one died.

The famous Darjeeling "Toy Train" steam powered railroad was following this road, so the train connection between Darjeeling and Siliguri at the bottom of the mountain is currently discontinued (until the landslide-damaged section gets rebuilt, if this ever happens).

There is word that the Government has planned to repair the damaged road and restore road and rail link to Darjeeling on National Highway 55 between Siliguri and Kurseong, But given the size and extent of the landslide damage, it will probably take years and be a very costly construction project.

In the mean time, there is a detour around the damaged section (via a very steep and narrow road that cannot be used by trucks). Trucks must use another road that completely bypasses this area.

Motor rickshaw transporting holy 5 legged and 6 legged cows.

The two calves in the back had extra legs attached to the top of their necks. This is a birth defect called Polymelia, where conjoint twins starts developing but one twin degenerated completely except for one or more limbs, which end up attached to the other twin.

With cows, the one or two extra limbs are often attached to the top of the cow's neck. This extra legs are shrunken, deformed and non-functional, and they get strange long nails (since the nails on normal cow legs get worn by walking).

In India, when a calf is born with extra leg or two, this is like winning the jackpot: those 5 legged and 6 legged cows are seen are very holy, and the owner will parade them around and receive donations from Hindu devotees.

These two calves (one with 5 legs, and the other one with 6 legs) were transported around the city in this specially designed motor rickshaw, covered with images of the famous "Sai Baba" (not sure why).

I took this photo at a cattle market I stumbled upon on the road in West Bengal (India).

All the local farmers were there to buy and sell livestock (often young animals). Most of them were Muslim. This is a portrait of one of those farmers.

The color of his teeth is from chewing Betel nut. Betel nut is consumed by many people in India, as a psycho-stimulating and euphoria-inducing drug.

Carnival 2010 in the streets of Tilcara (Argentina).

During Carnival festivities in the small village of Tilcara, in the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Northern Argentina), young men dress up as devils (diablos) with colorful costumes covered with mirrors. Women hold the tail of a devil and everyone is drinking and dancing to the music of marching bands.

Thousands of pilgrims take small row boats to reach the Sangam, where they take the holy bath. The river boats go around the impressive Allahabad Fort which is just upstream from the Sangam.

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

This is a Hindu offering ceremony to Lord Shiva, performed by members of a large Ashram at the Kumbh Mela festival.

Thousands of Hindu devotees each made hundreds of small lingams with soft clay, each lingam having three small white eyes. Then they all walked in a procession from the Ashram toward the nearby Ganges river, carrying trays on their heads, with all the small clay lingams on the trays. All the lingams were then thrown in the Ganges river, as an offering to Lord Shiva.

The village of Kagbeni in the Kali Gandaki valley, at the base of the Annapurna mountains in the Himalayas (Nepal)

See how it looks in sunny weather.

This is probably one of the most remote region I visited. It takes 2-3 days to reach this place by motorbike, from Pokhara.

The valley upstream from Kagbeni (in the back, behind the village on this photo) is part of the Upper Mustang Restricted Area, and special permits and guides are required to continue North towards the old royal city of Lo Mustang (see this photo of the sign). Those permits are rather expensive ($500 for 10 days), and they require that you hire a local guide. This was unfortunately out of my budget.

I wanted to continue the road up to Muktinath (no special permit required), but I was sick, quite tired, and the road from Kagbeni to Muktinath is really hard (very steep with a lot of loose gravel), so we stopped at Kagbeni.
