BYOBW - "Bring Your Own Big Wheel" race (San Francisco).

This is a free and unauthorized event. People race with Big Wheel toy tricycles and other non-motorized vehicles down the steep and curvy segment of Vermont Street in Potrero Hill. The racers reach dangerous speed and frequently crash. This race used to take place on the famous curvy segment of Lombard St, but because some of the Lombard St residents did not like the event and asked the police to shut it down, in 2009 they moved the BYOBW race to Vermont St where the neighbors have a more positive attitude.

For more information about this event, please read the album description.

This was the morning of Kumbh Maha Snan or main bathing day, also called Mauni Amavasya, which is the the most auspicious morning for taking the holy bath in the Ganges river.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

Steam Locomotive -#788 "Tusker" sharing the street with people in Darjeeling (India)

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway narrow gauge tracks are sharing the road with car traffic on the entire length of the narrow mountain road between Siliguri and Darjeeling (78 kilometres / 48 mi). So this is a pretty common sight along National Highway 55.

View more photos of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Country veterinarian spays a female piglet (Vietnam)

Spaying is a common and simple surgical operation to remove or disable a female animal’s ovaries.

Here the operation takes place in the village's pig market. The screaming piglet is attached up-side down on a piece of wood. The veterinarian performs a small incision that does not cause any bleeding (he must have done that operation very often and knows exactly where to cut). Then he inserts his bare fingers (no gloves, no scrubbing) in the piglet's belly through the incision to find the ovaries. Hopefully the animal has a good immune system! The ovaries are extracted, ligatured and put back inside, then the incision is stitched. Of course no anesthetic is used, so the piglet was very vocal during the entire operation that lasted no more than 5 minutes. After the operation the piglet seemed totally exhausted and suddenly very quite, after oinking very loudly during the whole ordeal.

See the other photos of the piglet spaying operation.

Group of Jangam Gurus with ceremonial turban, at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

The Jangam priests wear a very distinctive turban with a metal Naga snake and a plume-like or peacock feather on the top, which is a symbol of Vidya[gyan]. Vidya is a Sanskrit word that means “knowledge,” “clarity” or “higher learning.”

The Jangam or Jangamaru are a Shaiva order of religious monks. They are the priests or gurus of the Hindu Shaiva sect. Jangamas are also gurus of Veerashaiva sect. Jangamas are disciples of Lord Shiva as mentioned in Basava Puranas.

Jangams are very popular in Old Punjab. They are a non-Brahman Shaivite Order. Jangama is derived from the movable emblem of Lord Shiva. The meaning of word Jangam is 'moving linga' and considered superior to 'sthira linga'.

Regarding their birth the common myth is that they were born on their own out of the loins of Shiva. They are living in Haryana particularly in and around Kurukshetra. Earlier Punjab and Haryana had no division. Kurukshetra was the main center of Pasupati Shivaism.
