Inside the base of The Man, the giant installation called "Bee Here Now! " by Gregg Fleishman.

This is an intricate climbable 38′-tall sculpture representing a flower’s pistil. It was constructed without using any nail or screw, just interlocking pieces of plywood cut with great accuracy.

Members of the Igorot tribe of Mountain Province in northern Philippines have long practiced the tradition of burying their dead in hanging coffins, nailed to the sides of cliff faces high above the ground. The age-old funeral ritual continues to be performed, albeit on a much smaller scale than before.

That's how my KLR 650 motorbike looked when I reached home, after spending a week at the Burning Man festival. I'd say there was at least 150 lbs of luggage on that work-horse. Plus a few lbs of playa dust!

It looked like that from the side.

The bike was so heavy that it was unstable on the kick-stand, so i was using a wooden stick to prop it on the other side.

My left pannier is an aluminium Happy-Trail box, while the right one is a Pelican 1550 plastic case. The rack is a knock-off of the Happy-Trail rack, and it proved to be pretty sturdy.

The climbing route involves ascending more than 2,500 feet (750m) of almost vertical cliff, equipped with cables and occasional metal ladders or steps.

Indian army elite commandos patrolling the crowd of Hindu pilgrims gathering before dawn on the bank of the Ganges river, near the Sangam, during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India)

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

This was the early morning of January 27 (a full-moon night, called Paush Purnima), one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath. After a 7 km night walk, I arrived at the Sangam area at about 3am, early enough to be well positioned to take a few good photos in this gigantic crowd. The yellowish color is caused by the dim sodium-vapor street lights.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Two Sailing Stones on a collision course, on the Racetrack dry lake in Death Valley (California)

Sailing stones are rocks that move in long tracks on the smooth and perfectly flat surface of a dry lake, without human or animal intervention. The rocks are most likely propelled by strong winds while entrapped in floating ice sheets (or icebergs), after winter rains flooded the dry lake and made the mud soft and slippery.

Beggar with horrific skin disease (or burn?), at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

Maybe a flesh-eating bacteria or burn? If you can identify this medical condition, please post a Comment!

Some people say that here are syndicates who maim and injure such people and leave them out in public places to beg for money. On one stretch of road, there were several such 'beggars' interspersed at regular intervals. The injuries were always very similar and at the exact same location, on the left hand and lower left leg. It could be a clever make-up, but i'm not sure. If real, the injuries on the hands and legs look like very bad burns with surrounding necrotic tissue. These victims may not be beggars and the pain from such real injuries must be excruciating. If left untreated these sloughy wounds may well become septic and life threatening. Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.
