Beggar with horrific skin disease (or burn?), at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

Maybe a flesh-eating bacteria or burn? If you can identify this medical condition, please post a Comment!

Some people say that here are syndicates who maim and injure such people and leave them out in public places to beg for money. On one stretch of road, there were several such 'beggars' interspersed at regular intervals. The injuries were always very similar and at the exact same location, on the left hand and lower left leg. It could be a clever make-up, but i'm not sure. If real, the injuries on the hands and legs look like very bad burns with surrounding necrotic tissue. These victims may not be beggars and the pain from such real injuries must be excruciating. If left untreated these sloughy wounds may well become septic and life threatening. [thanks to "sensibles" for this info]

Sailing Stone on the Racetrack dry lake in Death Valley (California)

Sailing stones are rocks that move in long tracks on the smooth and perfectly flat surface of a dry lake, without human or animal intervention. The rocks are most likely propelled by strong winds while entrapped in floating ice sheets (or icebergs), after winter rains flooded the dry lake and made the mud soft and slippery.

Before eating the dog: Making sausages. Or should we say, "hot dogs". The stuffing is made by mixing the dog's blood and brain with some vegies and herbs.

This photo is part of a series called Thịt chó: eating a (hot) dog that can be seen on the website dog-meat.net. A lots of interesting comments and reactions have been posted on the various photo sites where this series has been published.

WARNING: These images are graphic, not suitable for kids and people with a weak stomach!

Western culture considers that eating a dog is cruel, barbaric and disgusting (not illegal, though), but ironically we have no problem eating all other sorts of animals as long as they are not called pets.

But for the vast majority of people on earth, cultural values are very different. Dog meat is considered a delicacy in some asian cultures, and indeed cooked dog meat is very tasty and protein rich. You should try it some day! (if you are not vegetarian)

"Food dogs" are not pets and they have no names. They are bred and raised in farms, just like pigs, cows, lambs, chickens and other farm animals. They are usually put down "humanely" just like any other farm animal, by slitting the throat and bleeding the animal until it passes out.- However some disturbing cases of food dogs being tortured before being slaughtered have been documented.

This series of photos shows the process involved in preparing a dog for dinner, from slautering to cutting-up, eviscerating, de-boning, cooking and of course eating! These photos were taken in Bac Ha, a small town in the Northern part of Vietnam, and in various markets of the region.

In case you are wondering, I did not order the dog for dinner, I just stumbled on the scene in the street and documented it, since I had my camera.

“The Nautilus” by Five Ton Crane, a San Francisco Bay Area art collective, is a 25 foot long art car inspired by the submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. It has a water cannon and a night vision periscope, but its most awesome detail is a 4 foot diameter door with a motorized brass aperture window shade and a squid-themed keyless entry system (video). Hindu pilgrims bathing in the Ganges river, at the Sangam, during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India)

Hundreds of small boats moored together form floating islands in the shallow waters. Thousands of pilgrims take the holy bath from those boats.

The wooden poles in the water are a safety fence, as most of the Hindu pilgrims can't swim!.

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

This was the morning of January 27 (a full-moon night, called Paush Purnima), one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

Pilier à Bras, avec dans le fond un pilier tourné a droite et un mur de hague a gauche (Secteur du Val-de-Grâce).

Catacombs of Paris (off-limit area), about 20 meters (60 feet) underground, under Paris city center.

This is a part of the 200 Km network of ancient tunnels not opened to the public, but regularly visited by trespassing urban cavers called "cataphiles". See more information in the album description.
