Millions of bats fly out of Deer Cave every evening - Mulu (Borneo)

In the evening, bat colonies fly out of the cave, forming long, undulating snake-like swarms in the sky. The mesmerizing event lasts for about half an hour, just before sunset.

Deer Cave is home to about 4 million Wrinkle Lipped Bats that live in colonies high up in the cave ceiling. Every evening all the bats fly out in huge swarms and clouds to feed.

For more photos and information about Deer Cave, go to my Deer Cave photo series.

This is one of the 18 temporary pontoon bridges (i.e. floating bridges) installed during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

In the back, a large Ashram in the shape of a pyramid.

If you know the name of the Pyramid Ashram, please post a Comment!

This pontoon bridge is over the Ganges (Ganga) river. Those floating bridges are built on top of large empty metal tanks, and are anchored to the river bottom with ropes on the upstream side of the bridge. Those bridges are mostly used for pedestrian traffic. During high affluence periods when large crowds are crossing the floating bridges, bridges are one-way, with alternating direction for each other bridge. This rule was taken after a stampede in a previous year caused the bridge railing to fail and many people to fall in the river and drawn (most of the Hindu pilgrims cannot swim!).

The water was very low in the Ganges river at the time, so in fact this bridge was not floating, but just sitting on the sandy bottom of the shallow river.

One of the many railroad monuments in Uyuni (Bolivia).

The worker is holding a wrench and a train steam engine wheel.

Uyuni used to have the largest train yard in Bolivia, at the time where steam trains were a primary mode of transportation. Now the train lines in Bolivia are falling into disrepair and few trains still run (very slowly) on the old tracks. The Uyuni train yard is mostly abandoned, and Railroad Monuments like this one all around the city are reminders of its glorious railroad past.

Abandoned Train Station

The "Petite Ceinture" or "PC" (Small Belt) is an abandoned railway line in the city of Paris (France).

The PC circles around Paris, hence the name "Small Belt". It was used for metro-type passenger trains until 1934. Since then, it is completely abandoned, made obsolete by the new underground metro lines, but most of the rails, tunnels and stations still exist. The PC mostly runs in trench or overpasses, with a few tunnel segments.

A classic destination for Parisian graffiti artists and urban explorers! Of course, this is a NO TRESPASSING area, and the Police Ferroviaire (Railway Police) occasionally writes hefty tickets to trespassers.

Check my other photos of railways.

Dog meat sold on the market (Lang Sơn, Vietnam)

This photo is part of a series called Thịt chó: eating a (hot) dog. A lots of interesting comments and reactions have been posted on the various photo sites where this series has been published.

WARNING: These images are graphic, not suitable for kids and people with a weak stomach!

Western culture considers that eating a dog is cruel, barbaric and disgusting (not illegal, though), but ironically we have no problem eating all other sorts of animals as long as they are not called pets.

But for the vast majority of people on earth, cultural values are very different. Dog meat is considered a delicacy in some asian cultures, and indeed cooked dog meat is very tasty and protein rich. You should try it some day! (if you are not vegetarian)

"Food dogs" are not pets and they have no names. They are bred and raised in farms, just like pigs, cows, lambs, chickens and other farm animals. They are usually put down "humanely" just like any other farm animal, by slitting the throat and bleeding the animal until it passes out.- However some disturbing cases of food dogs being tortured before being slaughtered have been documented.

This series of photos shows the process involved in preparing a dog for dinner, from slautering to cutting-up, eviscerating, de-boning, cooking and of course eating! These photos were taken in Bac Ha, a small town in the Northern part of Vietnam, and in various markets of the region.

In case you are wondering, I did not order the dog for dinner, I just stumbled on the scene in the street and documented it, since I had my camera.
