Songkran festival (Thai new year) in Chiang Mai (Thailand)

I had the chance to be in Chiang Mai during Songkran, the Thai New Year (April 13th through the following week-end). During this holidays period, a Thai tradition consists in throwing copious amounts of water to others as a way to wish a happy new year. Chiang Mai's old defensive moat provide a endless source of water for the occasion.

In Indonesia, some youngsters ride old customized Vespa scooters often equipped with makeshift sidecars. Those contraptions are semi-legal but tolerated by authorities. They have no license plates, so they pay no registration fees and have no insurance. Officially, those vehicles don't exist.

The youngsters riding those Vespas seem to be living in fringe of society, like punks or runaways. I don't know how they are called in Indonesian, but since there are a lot of them all over the country, they must have a way to call those guys.

Road bridge over the Ganga river floodplain.

The sandy floodplain is used for agriculture during the dry season. Small plantations (I don't know of what) are protected by fences made of some sort of dry grass or weed manually planted in the sand, that prevent flying sand from burying the small planted areas.

If you know the name of this type of agriculture or know what is being grown there, please post a comment!

During the rainy season (monsoon), the entire floodplain is flooded by the Ganges river.

BYOBW - "Bring Your Own Big Wheel" race (San Francisco).

This is a free and unauthorized event. People race with Big Wheel toy tricycles and other non-motorized vehicles down the steep and curvy segment of Vermont Street in Potrero Hill. The racers reach dangerous speed and frequently crash. This race used to take place on the famous curvy segment of Lombard St, but because some of the Lombard St residents did not like the event and asked the police to shut it down, in 2009 they moved the BYOBW race to Vermont St where the neighbors have a more positive attitude.

For more information about this event, please read the album description.

I shot many of those photos with a very slow shutter speed to capture the motion effect. It is not easy to get good shots of this event.

Ruins of Ishan Monastery (Turkey)

The church is a domed cruciform structure. The dome over the central square bay rests on four free-standing piers, each having a diameter of about two-meters.

During the conversion of the church into a mosque, a wall (visible on the left side of this photo) was constructed between the west arm and the central bay, the south and west entrances were closed, a mihrab niche facing in the direction of Mecca was constructed within the closed southern entrance, and the northern annex was converted into a prayer hall.

Country veterinarian spays a female piglet (Vietnam)

Piglet is dead-tired after oinking very loudely during the entire surgery! The little criter will hopefully life a happier life before some day becoming bacon and ham.

Spaying is a common and simple surgical operation to remove or disable a female animal’s ovaries.

Here the operation takes place in the village's pig market. The screaming piglet is attached up-side down on a piece of wood. The veterinarian performs a small incision that does not cause any bleeding (he must have done that operation very often and knows exactly where to cut). Then he inserts his bare fingers (no gloves, no scrubbing) in the piglet's belly through the incision to find the ovaries. Hopefully the animal has a good immune system! The ovaries are extracted, ligatured and put back inside, then the incision is stitched. Of course no anesthetic is used, so the piglet was very vocal during the entire operation that lasted no more than 5 minutes. After the operation the piglet seemed totally exhausted and suddenly very quite, after oinking very loudly during the whole ordeal.

Arc welding repair on my motorcycle rack (India)

Luggage racks on Royal Enfield Bullet motorbike have the tendency to crack and break frequently, due to weak brackets, poor design and vibrations.

This guy fixed my cracked brackets in a small village in Sikkim.

He is arc welding with no protection of any kind, not even welding glasses, which is quite common in poorer areas that only have the bear minimum supplies and equipment. Of course he did an excellent job, and charged me the normal price for the repair (a couple of dollars).

Old graffiti from french sailors in cave on desert island (Halong Bay, Vietnam)

Those graffiti were apparently made by sailors from the french war ship Georges Leygues in 1938. Most graffiti are dated January 28-29, (19)38 and have a reference to the Georges Leygues.

Some graffiti are also dated March 2, 1930. The Vietnamese guide told us that this cave had been used by French soldiers as a prison (not sure if this is correct, but it is plausible).

Adit tunnel, part of an unfinished Hydropower project in Sikkim (India)

I was able to explore the tunnel up to a point where it was flooded (the water pumps were not functionning, but there was some electric lights). The tunnel is obviously unfinished. Not sure what this tunnel is for. I think it maybe to drive heavy equipment to the site, like turbines for the power house, since the small mountain roads cannot be used by heavy trucks.

Two river row boats sailing on Ganges river in Varanasi (India).

The river boats are used to ferry Hindu pilgrims to a beach across the river, where they can take the Holy bath in cleaner water.

Sailing Stones on the Racetrack dry lake in Death Valley (California)

Sailing stones are rocks that move in long tracks on the smooth and perfectly flat surface of a dry lake, without human or animal intervention. The rocks are most likely propelled by strong winds while entrapped in floating ice sheets (or icebergs), after winter rains flooded the dry lake and made the mud soft and slippery.

For more photos and information about the Racetrack sailing stones, go to the Sailing Stones photo series.

Downstream side of the Tehri Dam in the Bhagirathi Valley, one of the headstreams of the Ganges river (India)

On the left side, you can see the overflow spillway.

The Tehri Dam was (and still is) a very controversial project, as it flooded a valley resulting in the destruction of numerous villages and a town (Tehri), and forced the relocation of about 100,000 people.

The Tehri Dam is the tallest dam in India and one of the tallest in the world. The dam is a 260.5 metres (855 ft) high rock and earth-fill embankment dam. The dam creates a reservoir with a surface area of 52 square kilometres (20 sq mi).

For more photos and info about the controversial Tehri Dam Hydro Power project, go to the Tehri Dam & Lake photo series.

Ancient Khasi memorial stones, in the East Khasi Hills, in Meghalaya (India)

I noticed a large number of those small square stone structures (about 20-30 cm side for the center hole).

From reading various old books about the Khasi people ancient funeral traditions, I believe that those square structures are small burial chamber, i.e. small boxes where the ashes of the dead were kept, temporarily before a big ceremony (that did not take place too often) where they were moved into a larger Cinerarium (or large burial chamber), i.e. basically a communal tomb holding the remains of all the Tribe's elders.

For more photos and information about these, go to the Khasi Memorial Stones album (read the album description).
