The top of the columns of Devils Postpile - Columnar Basalt in the Eastern Sierra (California)

A basalt volcanic flow formed hexagonal-shaped columns when it cooled down.

You can clearly see the parallel grooves showing the erosion caused by debris pushed by the slow-moving ice of the glacier that used to cover this valley. Those marks are called glacial striations.

Collapsed bamboo structure at the Kumbh Mela 2013 Hindu festival near Allahabad (India)

This bamboo structure was the gate of an Ashram, which got toppled and destroyed by the big storm that caused extensive damage and flooding in the entire Kumbh Mela this year.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

My windsurfing gear.

Sadly all my land sailing gear got stolen (yes, stolen!) last year at Burning Man 2007 (board, 2 sails, 2 carbon masts, 2 booms, streamers), more than $1500 worth of equipment. The equipment was stolen just before the dust storm on Friday afternoon, near 8:00 and Esplanade in front of the minigolf camp. I filed a police report. Any information about this equipment is welcome, e.g. maybe you have seen your neighbors coming to their camp with all this gear?

I don't know if I'll have the heart to do that again...

This is my friend Sabine ascending the via ferrata Tridentina, Dolomites Mountains (Italian Alps).

The climbing route involves ascending more than 2,500 feet (750m) of almost vertical cliff, equipped with cables and occasional metal ladders or steps.

Floating Trash on the riachuelo (La Boca, Buenos Aires)

No, this is not the Great Pacific Garbage Patch!

Half of the trash is made of plastic bottles. Plastic bottles (especially mineral water bottles) are evil. Please drink tap water (or purified / filtered tap water if needed).

Sale of plastic bottles should not be permitted in countries that do not recycle plastic trash.

And in countries where plastic trash is recycled, there should be a tax on plastic bottles, used to finance recycling and to encourage people to bring their plastic trash to recycling centers where they would get that tax back. This is the case in many states in the US, and a lot of unemployed people make money by scavenging plastic trash and bringing it to recycling centers, where they get paid for the trash they bring. As a result, there is much less plastic trash in the environment.

I had the chance to be in Chiang Mai during Songkran, the Thai New Year (April 13th through the following week-end). During this holidays period, a Thai tradition consists in throwing copious amounts of water to others as a way to wish a happy new year. Chiang Mai's old defensive moat provide a endless source of water for the occasion.

The mouth of Deer Cave in Gunung Mulu National Park (Borneo)

Deer Cave is a passage about 150 m (500 feet) in diameter and about 1 Km (0.6 Miles) long, opened on both end. It was, for many years, considered the largest single cave passage in the world.

The small silhouette at the bottom right of the image gives an idea if the size of this cave.

SFPD Police cracking-down and arresting many peaceful revelers during the Bay to Breakers footrace festival. It did not appear that the people they arrested were drunk or causing any trouble. They got arrested just because they were partying in the street. Police apparently had orders to crack-down on all festivities on city streets at the 2011 Bay to Breakers race.

SFPD Police did not arrest people that were partying on Park land (Pan handle and Golden Gate Park). I suppose that the rules for arresting people on Park property are a bit different.

Road construction (Vietnam)

1) put some wood between the barrels of asphalt and start a fire so that the asphalt will melt and become liquid. If no wood is available, use anything that can burn, like old tires. Bonus points if you can burn something really toxic.

2) When the asphalt start melting, scoop some at the top and poor it on the wood. Asphalt burns well, so this will help melting the rest of the asphalt.

3) Repeat step 2 until the asphalt in entirely melted in the barrels. This will take several hours and produce a really nice plume of toxic smoke. If you are lucky, you will only need to burn 30% of your asphalt to melt the rest, so you have 70% asphalt left to pour on the road.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, locally known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling (India). It is still operated by vintage British-built B Class steam locomotives. Operations between Siliguri and Kurseong have been temporarily suspended since 2010 following a Landslide at Tindharia (view photos of the landslide).

Michelangelo's fresco in Sistine chapel (Vatican)

It was very dark and flash was not allowed (light damages the fresco). tripods were not allowed either, so i placed my Pentax MX film camera on the floor and took a long exposure shot (probably 30 sec or 1 min). it turned out amazingly good, especially since i estimated the exposure time as i had no light meter.

Medicine man's most precious treasure (Mèo Vac, Vietnam)

It looked like very thin hair or fibers (probably hair, maybe of a rare animal?), in a container looking like a tiny shoe (doll shoe?). That was apparently something very precious for Medicine man, and he would keep it in a concealed pocket in his jacket.

What made this bull especially Holy is the strange long wattle protrusion at the back of his hump. This is an excrescence of skin, similar to the wattle that goats have under their neck, but much bigger!Pilgrims would touch the wattle for good luck, and donate money to the owner of the Holy Bull.

It was getting cold so I gave her my Ecole Polytechnique "Grand-Uniforme" dress jacket, and we did a small photoshoot in the street.

Women at the Ecole Polytechnique actually have a slightly different Grand-Uniforme jacket. This is the "man" type.

The Lamplighters ready to go to work.

They will hang the lanterns to the polls around Black Rock City in a daily ceremony.

The dreamy lomo-like optical effect was accidentally created by zooming through a fish-eye extension!

This is one of the steep area to scramble up, with some technical difficulty, and some old snow.

Ascending the via ferrata Tridentina, Dolomites Mountains (Italian Alps).

On the hardest passages, steel ladder steps and stemples are bolted to the vertical rock wall.

The climbing route involves ascending more than 2,500 feet (750m) of almost vertical cliff, equipped with cables and occasional metal ladders or steps.
