Songkran festival (Thai new year) in Chiang Mai (Thailand)

I had the chance to be in Chiang Mai during Songkran, the Thai New Year (April 13th through the following week-end). During this holidays period, a Thai tradition consists in throwing copious amounts of water to others as a way to wish a happy new year. Chiang Mai's old defensive moat provide a endless source of water for the occasion.

People on top of the still hot twisted wreckage of the giant metal gears, in the embers of the Burning Man fire.

Those gears were supposed to allow participants to rotate the "Vitruvian Man", but the under-engineered system broke and could not be repaired before the end of the Burning Man week.

Casa de la Moneda - Potosí (Bolivia)

This is the old Spanish mint where the silver from the mines of Potosí was transformed into coins.

The original minting machines are preserved in a near-perfect state. The oldest machines were made of huge wooden gears and powered by slaves or animals (depending on availability). Later they used steam-powered machines, but luckily they kept the old machines untouched (just in case!). This huge building is now a national museum.

Hindu pilgrims gathering to bathe in the Ganges river, at the Sangam, during the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India)

The wooden poles in the water are a safety fence, as most of the Hindu pilgrims can't swim! There are also small river boats patrolling the fence for safety, in case a pilgrim would accidentally get swept away by the river current.

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

This was the morning of January 27 (a full-moon night, called Paush Purnima), one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

Art car with big hamsa hand in circle, blowing fire.

This symbol is the hamsa hand, also called the Hand of Fatima in Islam and Hand of Miriam in Judaism (it is not the hand of Buddha!). The hamsa is a symbol of protection, strength, and power that dates back to ancient Mesopotamia. It is a popular symbol in the Middle East and North Africa, and is often used in wall hangings and jewelry. The hamsa is believed to protect against negative energies and the evil eye. It is also said to attract positive energies, which can lead to good health, happiness, fortune, and luck. For more info about the Hamsa (hand symbol), go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamsa.

This art car is an early version of the Calico Fagon Art Car (thanks to Casey_Ho for help identifying it). It was designed and built by Tom West from the "Creeps on The Corner" camp.

Deer Cave in Gunung Mulu National Park (Borneo)

Deer Cave is a passage about 150 m (500 feet) in diameter and about 1 Km (0.6 Miles) long, opened on both end. It was, for many years, considered the largest single cave passage in the world.

This year, like the 3 previous years, I traveled to and from BM on my KLR 650 motorbike, carrying all my gear, bicycle, tent and food needed for the week in the desert. I even managed to carry 12 gallons of water, almost enough for the whole week.

Crazy Bunnies

The Bunny March is a flash-mob type event where all the bunnies of the city assemble and march to The Man, then to Center Camp, causing devastation and mayhem. They attached giant bunny ears to "The Man". Their leader is the Uber Bunny (Steven Raspa).

Kelambu Island and Tombolo (Borneo)

Kelambu is a Tied Island covered by rain forest, connected to land by a narrow shoal of white sand called a tombolo. On each side, two beautiful desert beaches and very calm, blue sea water. Here is the view from the Kelambu island.

It really looks like paradise, except for all the plastic trash.

Kelambu is truly a beautiful secluded beach, hard to reach and far away for the nearest village. I decided to spend one night on that desert beach.

Police on Horses patrolling the Sangam at Kumbh Mela, where hundreds of thousands Hindu pilgrims are gathering before dawn on the bank of the Ganges river, near Allahabad (India)

Many policemen were also patrolling on foot, blowing incessantly in their whistles and asking people to not loiter and leave the area quickly after the bath, to make room for the coming crowd. The horse police was used for crowd control, and they could get a better view of the area.

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

This was the early morning of January 27 (a full-moon night, called Paush Purnima), one of the most auspicious mornings for taking the holy bath. After a 7 km night walk, I arrived at the Sangam area at about 3am, early enough to be well positioned to take a few good photos in this gigantic crowd. The yellowish color is caused by the dim sodium-vapor street lights.

Sailing Stone on the Racetrack dry lake in Death Valley (California)

Sailing stones are rocks that move in long tracks on the smooth and perfectly flat surface of a dry lake, without human or animal intervention. The rocks are most likely propelled by strong winds while entrapped in floating ice sheets (or icebergs), after winter rains flooded the dry lake and made the mud soft and slippery.

Gurus parade at the Kumbh Mela 2013 festival near Allahabad (India).

This was Kumbh Maha Snan or main bathing day, also called Mauni Amavasya, which is the the most auspicious morning for taking the holy bath in the Ganges river.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

A woman is sending a text message with her iPhone, at the Center Camp Cafe

2009 was the the first year where cell phone service (from AT&T and Verizon) is available at the Burning Man Festival. The service was only working with iPhones.
