Marpha village, between Tatopani and Jomsom, on the Annapurnas road (Nepal)

Unlike other villages in the Kali Gandaki valley, Marpha has been "beautified" for the tourists trekking on the Annapurnas route.

Stone houses are all nicely whitewashed. Many houses on the main street have been converted into shops selling souvenirs and supplies.

It is pretty, but much less authentic than Kagbeni, another old village further up in the valley.

"Enjoy your ride, don't commit suicide" sign on the road to Darjeeling (India)

The funny part is that shortly after this sign, the road comes to an abrupt end due to a major landslide that happened in June 2010.

This sign obviously predates this landslide.

Although this sign is not signed, it looks very much like an old sign from BRO (the Border Roads Organisation), that built the mountains roads and bridges in West Bengal.

This installation had to be cleaned after each dust storm! (see the top part of it still covered with dust).

The Tehri Dam was (and still is) a very controversial project, as it flooded two valleys resulting in the destruction of numerous villages and a town (Tehri), all now submerged, and forced the relocation of about 100,000 people.

Devprayag is a Hindu holy city in India, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet and become the Ganges river.

There is a Ghat (steps to the holy bath) at the Sangam, i.e. the exact point of the confluence. Hindu pilgrims take a holy dip right where the two sacred rivers meet.

In Hindu mythology and culture, the Bhagirathi (on the left, with the green water) is considered the source stream of the Ganges. However, in hydrology, the other headstream, Alaknanda (on the right, with the brown water), is considered the source stream on account of its great length and discharge.

Smiling Sadhu with bad teeth at the Kumbh Mela 2013 Hindu festival near Allahabad (India).

His face is covered with ritual white Vibhuti holy ash.

Kumbh Mela is the largest festival on Earth, taking place once every 12 years, with more than 50 million Hindu pilgrims gathering to pray and bathe in the holy Ganges river.

Thousands of Hindu devotees gather on the bank of the Ganges river at the Sangam where they will take the Holy Dip. The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Yamuna and the Ganga (Ganges) rivers, and this is the holiest place to take the ritual baths during the Kumbh Mela.

A Muni light rail train (sort of metro-tramway) going fast in the Duboce Tunnel, also known as Sunset Tunnel (San Francisco).

There is not enough clearance between the train and the tunnel walls, so you *must* hide in a small alcove when you see a train coming.

No trespassing! This is REALLY a DANGEROUS place!
