Actually, I think she was just bored waiting for me to attempt to get a focal point and having a laugh at my expense.
An unsuccessful attempt at something other than beaches........
Learning the hard way!
actually this is an instagram filter Black and white version so it is very inaccurate the light colours are a bit bleached
I couldn't find okra so I don't even want to count this for my 30 before 30. It was tasty-flavored, though!
Actually, Ao lives in Chigasaki, the beach-side town just outside of Yokohama, but that still makes him a peep...
Ao is the lead guitarist and singer for the Japanese psychedelic rock-jam band Dachambo. I wrote about them in the last issue of Koe Magazine. Since discovering them at Fukuoka's Sunset Live 2009, I've been following them and they've been kind enough to let me shoot at their concerts from the stage.
I was really surprised and happy when I discovered this picture. I shot it backstage at Sunset Live, after Ego Wrappin's huge encore on the last night when multiple artists came on stage for a rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." I forgot taking this picture and didn't even realize it was Ao at the time. Months later, after shooting them at several shows, both backstage and on stage, I rediscover this little gem!
We made our annual trip to London in November. We travel down by coach from Slaithwaite and stay at The Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch. It’s actually a weekend ladies shopping trip that is run as a fundraiser for Slaithwaite Brass Band – I’m the only bloke that goes every year! We decided ( the two of us) to stay down in London until Thursday this time as we wanted to see weekday London and be able to explore a bit further afield on foot. We covered up to 16 miles a day, which is tough going on crowded pavements with hundreds of busy roads to cross. I photographed anything that looked interesting but I bent a contact in the CF card slot, fortunately I had quite a few SD cards with me and the 5D has dual slots so I was able to carry on using it. It’s currently at Lehmann’s getting fixed.
With it being close to Christmas the decorations are up everywhere so there was plenty of colour at night. In Hyde Park the Winter Wonderland was in full swing, we’ve never bothered going to it before but I went twice at night this time. It is massive this year, I couldn’t get over how big it is and the quality of some of the attractions. The cost and effort involved must be phenomenal – it was quite expensive though. It was very difficult to photograph, with extremes of light (LED’s) and darkness and fast moving rides into the bargain. I think I have some decent usable stuff but at the time of writing I am only part way through the editing process so I don’t know for sure.
We set off at around 8.15 am every day and stayed out for at least 12 hours. The weather was poor for a day and a half with drizzle and very dull grey conditions, fortunately we had some pleasant weather (and light) along the way as well. Being based at the end of Oxford Street – Europe’s busiest shopping street – meant that I did quite a bit of night shooting on there. Although I carried a tripod everywhere I only used it once and that was during the day! Because there is always a moving element in almost every shot it seemed pointless using a tripod. I would have got some shots free of movement – or I could have gone for ultra-long exposures to eliminate people and traffic but it would have been problematic I felt. In the end I wound the ISO up and hand held – fingers crossed.
We walked out to Camden Market and Locks but it had been raining and we were a bit early as many were only just setting up for the day. We tried to follow routes that we hadn’t used before and visit new places. We paid a fortune to get in St Pauls but you can’t use cameras. This something that I fail to see the point of, ban flash if you want but if you are going to encourage tourism why ban cameras when there is nothing in particular happening in there. It’s a rule that seems to be applied arbitrarily in cities around the world. Fortunately we could take photos from the outside of the dome, which was real reason for visiting, and we had some great light. Expensive compared with a couple of euros in some famous cathedrals. I’ve wanted to walk to Canary Wharf for a number of years and this year we did. We crisscrossed the Thames a few times and tried to follow the Thames path at other times. We covered around ten miles but it was an interesting day. It was also very quiet for the last four or five miles. We got there about 12.00 and managed to get a sandwich in a café in the shopping centre at the foot of the high rise office blocks before tens of thousands of office workers descended from above. It was mayhem, packed, with snaking queues for anywhere that sold food. We crossed to the other side of The Isle of Dogs and looked across to the O2 Arena and the cable car, unfortunately there isn’t a way across for pedestrians and it was around 3.00 pm. With darkness falling at around 4.30 we decide it was too late to bother. We made our way back to the Thames Clipper pier to check the sailing times. They sail every twenty minutes so we had a couple of glasses of wine and a rest before catching the Clipper. Sailing on the Thames was a first in 15 trips to London. The Clipper is fast and smooth, the lights had come on in the city and there was a fantastic moon rise. It was nigh on impossible to get good shots at the speed we were traveling though and there were times that I wished I could be suspended motionless above the boat. Again, hopefully I will have some usable shots.
We felt that the shopping streets were a little quieter, following the Paris massacre it was to be expected, I might be wrong as we were out and about at later times than previous trips. I think I have heard that footfall is down though. It was good to get into some of the quieter backstreets and conversely to be stuck in the city business district – The Square Mile- at home time. A mass exodus of people running and speed walking to bus stops and the rail and tube stations. It was difficult to move against or across the flow of bodies rushing home.
Whilst the Northern(manufacturing) economy is collapsing, London is a giant development site, it must be the tower crane capital of Europe at the moment. It was difficult to take a shot of any landmark free of cranes, it was easier to make the cranes a feature of the photo. It’s easy to see where the wealth is concentrated – not that there was ever any doubt about it. The morons with too much money are still driving their Lambo’s and Ferraris etc. like clowns in streets that are packed with cars , cyclists and pedestrians, accelerating viciously and noisily for 50 yards. They are just sad attention seekers. From Battersea to Canary Wharf we walked the Thames Embankment, the difference between high and low tide on the river is massive, but the water was the colour of mud – brown! Not very attractive in colour. We caught a Virgin Train from Kings Cross for £14.00 each – a bargain!. We had quite a bit of time to kill around midday at Kings Cross so I checked with security that I was OK to wander around taking photos, without fear of getting jumped by armed security, and set off to photograph the station and St Pancras International Station across the road. I haven’t even looked at the results as I type this but I’ll find out if they are any good shortly. Talking of security, following Paris, there was certainly plenty of private security at most attractions, I don’t know if it was terrorism related though, I can’t say I noticed an increased police presence on the streets. It took us three hours and five minutes from Kings Cross to being back home, not bad for a journey of 200 miles. I can’t imagine that spending countless billions on HS2 or HS3 is going to make a meaningful (cost effective) difference to our journey. Improving what we have, a little faster, would be good. There are some bumpy bits along the route for a mainline and Wakefield to Huddersfield is the equivalent of a cart track – and takes over 30 minutes – it’s only a stone’s throw.
actually observed in a fairly LARGE town...so I have no idea what small town they're referring to...
But I think the fatuously grinning Disney-fied kids above this bumper/rant provide a big hint that I wouldn't have a lot in common with these folks any way, regardless of where they're from.
Actually he was fiddling with his smartphone - like anybody else in this district of clothing wholesale boutiques.

Love these little things. I actually see a few about, one particularly in my town but never get the chance to photograph it. This one threw me a little, as it was parked near to me in a bootsale carpark when I returned something to my car. I planned the trek across to it shortly when I returned to leave, then this parked up here as I was heading back to the car. I thought it was a different one however being the other one was gone it may have been the same car just moved.
Actually my wife had asked me to clean her car when she returned home later and this is what greeted her!
Needless to say I didn’t get paid………..
This was during my exciting, spontaneous, snowy Reno outing with my cousin and her coworker Eugene... We were actually headed back home at this time...
Our trip in summary:
We left early Sunday morning (February 19) and arrived to our hotel at Best Western Plus Boomtown Casino Hotel. We reserved for only one night. We enjoyed their lobster buffet there...yum! After eating, we drove and explored around Reno, around the Wingfield Park. We then called it a day afterwards... After a restless evening (since I didn't have a bed), we headed home the very next morning, but things got interesting: We got stranded in the snow around Truckee since my cousin forgot her keys in the trunk! She forgot it when we were putting our car's snow chains. After 2 hours (while at the same time calling for help), we finally managed to open the backseat to get into the trunk. We then continued down I-80 slowly thru the whiteout conditions and finally got down the mountains safely, though the rain continued to fall even as we got back home. What an interesting trip we had!
(Snow Outing taken place February 19-20, 2017. Footage filmed Monday, February 20, 2017.)
Weather scenario/forecast:
A powerful Pacific storm had moved into Northern California overnight Sunday and was expected to remain in the region thru Tuesday. The storm was forecast to bring plentiful rain, mountain snow and strong winds to the state. This winter has been quite active for atmospheric rivers in the West. Indeed, this season has knocked out the 5-year drought gripping the state. Also, much of the Sierra Nevada saw its rainiest & snowiest October-February period on record! "Heavy snow was to create dangerous conditions, with travel being severely impacted over the Sierra passes, including I-80," according to NWS. The snow amounts in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range this winter are difficult to wrap your head around. In many cases topping 500 inches, they are some of the highest totals in memory.

I actually have a series of these but they're on my TB drive waiting to be edited once I fix my ModBook. Taken when I lived [briefly] in Johnson City, TN, along a creek behind the apartments I stayed in. Diaz loves to explore.
Actually this is what the Danes know as a "Marsvin", a porpoise. This shot was by and large the only thing caught while fishing. Never seen this many or this merry before; to my knowledge it is quite unusual for them to leap out of the water!
Actually an European garden spider, shot in a greenhouse. They enjoy such a warm, humid yet sheltered environment.
There is actually a patch that allows to process X-T1 RAW files in Lightroom 5.3, but the results are not the best, and exported jpegs are not so sharp and detailed as SOOC jpegs. I hope that Lightroom 5.4 will do better.
I wont even fit into your frame.... people call me Dinner plate Dhalia but Iam actually bigger than that.
Day 32
Lagoona: Um, hello? A little nakey here!
Me: Yeah, uhhhhhhhhh, you see I kinda sorta never learned how to sew...
Lagoona: Then steal some clothes from another doll for me, brah! I'm freezing my gills off here!
Um, so, yeah, if anyone knows of any nice mermaidish clothes I can buy for her that will actually fit a Monster High doll I would sure appreciate it. :)
Actually, Broadway at the Beach was incredibly busy that day. It just so happened that people were either behind poles, in stores or almost just out of view. We hurried the shot to make it look like no one was around. If I had clicked the shutter 4-5 seconds later, you would have seen maybe 15-20 people strolling along. It's awesome how some shots work out, isn't it?!?
Cows, Sunset, Doel, Belgium
I actually went to photograph the nuclear powerstation at Doel after work, but these cows all lined up next to their electric fence when I arrived. In todays climate of terrorismo it's probably better to avoid the powerstations and capture the cows instead. They were very inquisitive. I'm not sure if they were just saying hello or they wanted a tasty treat or for me to help them escape. So I had to leave them to their fate.
Anyway, they stood obligingly still...more or less. Thanks cows.
I actually like this dress better than my other black Alex Wang, but I wear it less. This one always seemed a little bit fancier to me. I love the built-in scarf– so many ways to wear it, and it’s also just fun to play with. This is the first time I’ve worn something over this dress. It turned out much better than I thought it would, so I’ll have to style it again with one of my other black sweater things.
Francesca’s Collections open cardigan, Alexander Wang dress, MIA boots (DSW.com).
Lucky 13 torch tips, 13 is actually the full range that Smith used to have, from AW2000 all the way to AW210, Here 3 are spares, and my biggest is a 208, which technically withdraws to much acetylene for my tank size so I don’t use it, did at ex- work (Funny that withdrawing rate, as I have a collection of welding books, earliest one they recommend 1/3, a British one 1/5, most late century 1/7, and this century 1/10 for intermittent use 1/15 I think for continuous, but of course that gets completely blown out of the water with the small portable cutting kits and not word of that is ever mentioned when you go buy them) l acquired the 3 painted ones very recently supposedly NOS painted for identification, why the hell would you do that, a dot of paint I can understand, it’s a pain in the ass to remove, but happy to have them. One more an I’m done. AW200. Anyone trade/sell?
I can't believe it actually worked. I didn't measure time, temperature or ingredients particularly well.
Developed with caffenol
Approximately 500ml water
Approximately 27g washing soda

Water warm from the hot tap to help dissolve the ingredients, left for approximately 10 minutes to cool.
Develop - Approximately 15 minutes, 5 or 6 inversions in the first minute, and then occasional inversions at random intervals after that.
Stop - 5 or 6 changes of cold tap water, then left in cold tap water for approximately 5 minutes. Then 2 or 3 changes of cold tap water. [Actually while the film was left in the cold water I had a cup of tea.]
Fix – 3 or 4 minutes, 5 or 6 inversions in the first minute, then occasional inversions after that.
Wash – Approximately 10 changes of cold tap water, then after removing the tank lid running cold tap water for approximately 2 minutes.
Actually this is one activity I would like to try on my next trip, thanks for being the inspiration
Siem Reap, Cambodia
Actually, more like "Leave everything, except the cannoli." :)
We visited Erice a couple of times and always stopped by Maria Grammatico's little pastry shop for a coffee and sweet treats...
Maria Grammatico was raised in a convent orphanage, where she was taught how to make traditional Sicilian treats by the nuns, and later set up shop in Erice. She's possibly Italy's best pastry chef... :)
Actually at times there were eight, but this was the best shot (albeit not very good). I need to find a way to get closer.
Actually makes sense: In the former post distribution centre there are slides that have served as gigantic mail-slides. So, seeing them now, you think to yourself: I want to slide down!
Here we go: In the u19 – CREATE YOUR WORLD area you can glide down a slide!

Actually the proper name is "University Church of St Mary the Virgin"*. 30 second exposure... nothing special... but I had to get out and go for a walk!
* I can't resist commenting: Why not "a virgin" - she's (assuming the namer meant "that" Mary) not the only virgin Mary in the world's history I'm sure? Why bring her sexual status into the matter at all? What shame it must be to be only famous for one thing - not having had sex!
