I was actually sitting down like 30 feet from them and zoomed in!

actually it's no self portrait. my sister shot this one. my grandmas's 80. birthday. most of the time it was pretty much fun.

I had actually left my small tripod at home because I knew that the moon would be out in full during our time in South Africa, meaning star pics would not be happening. I brought along just a Gorilla Pod instead. However, on our last night on safari, as we were walking back to the tent to get to bed, I looked up at the moon and noticed right away that it wasn't normal. Turns out it was the longest full eclipse of the moon in over 100 years, and it was happening in South Africa, RIGHT NOW!

I got the camera on the Gorilla Pod, but it would not hold, So after coaxing it to at least stay still while resting on the ground and essentially using the Gorilla Pod to simply point the camera, I was able to get the best Milky Way shots of my life. Probably not as good as they could have been if I could ever figure out the secrets that other people use. But it was amazing!

And the fact is, this last shot of the Moon, Mars, and the Milky Way really is what you could see with the naked eye that night!

Actually, she "decked" herself. I pulled the garland out of a storage box and left it in a heap on the couch. Then I went to the basement for another load of stuff. When I returned here was Natasha. I'm not sure how she got it around her neck so nicely, but she got bored with it and extricated herself as soon as I'd taken the picture.

Actually the feathers are the same, but the beaks are rather unique. I don't see these guys very often. To be honest I don't even know what kind of birds the are but we had a lot of them in the park this morning.

Edit- based on the comment below I went Googling and they do appear to be Black Skimmers, the beak is pretty distinctive. It also appears that the reason I don't remember seeing them before is that they really are not native at all to this area; mostly South America and the Caribbean. Guess these guys were plain lost or just visiting the area for Spring Break?
