I finished my Associates degree today. I can't believe I'll never have to deal with that again (until I decide to go back for a Bachelors... Maybe.)

This is a sight one will often see...naked and barefoot children playing with whatever they find on the street, trash included. Parents don't seem to mind.

Each year, 23five curates Activating The Medium around a specific theme that seeks to underscore the connectivity between artists working with various methods and materials. Previous festivals have explored field recording, mimesis, the architectural impact from sound, and many other concepts and themes. The 2011 festival explores the use of radio through composition and new media presentation. Looking back to the seminal works of Stockhausen, Cage, and Tenney through the culture jamming theatrics of Negativland and into the psychological minimalism of John Duncan, radio has served an invaluable and expressive tool within the continued history of avant-garde composition. Hence, 23five will present works including Richard Garet's grey-noise constructions mined from radio interference and electromagnetic disturbances and Byron Westbrook's multichannel diffusion of live transmission and reception of radio signals.

In addition, 23five will be presenting a radio series of additional works of composers using radio as source material with the intent of this being broadcast by means of radio.

On March 22nd at 4:56pm, Crystal Lake Fire/Rescue responded to 62 Barberry Dr. for a reported structure fire.

At 5:00pm CLFR activated MABAS Box #5-342 to the Box Level for the structure fire:

Engine(s): McHenry, Nunda Rural

Trucks(s): Huntley

Squad(s): Cary w/ Cascade

EMS: Lakewood, East Dundee

Chief(s): Algonquin RIT

Special Equipment: Rehab 5, Algonquin Safety Officer, Cary Safety Officer

Change of Quarters to Station 1: Wonder Lake Engine, Fox River Grove EMS

At 5:43pm by the orders of Command, MABAS Box #5-342 was struck out.

News article obtained from the Northwest Herald:

CRYSTAL LAKE – A fire on Saturday caused $80,000 in damage, leaving the Crystal Lake house uninhabitable, the fire department said.

Firefighters from multiple departments were called about 5 p.m. to 62 Barberry Drive. No one was in the house when the fire started and no one was hurt during the call, said Deputy Chief Paul DeRaedt of the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department.

Smoke billowed from the house as firefighters extended a ladder over the home to shoot water down. The fire was under control at 6:07 p.m.

The fire appears to have started in or around a detached garage that was close to the back of the single-story house, the fire department said in a news release. The fire spread to the house, which showed signs of a weakened roof.

According to the news release, the fire began to melt siding and break windows of the homes on either side of the house involved in the fire. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading.

The initial estimate of damage is $80,000, the fire department said.

The cause of the fire is not known, and is under investigation by the fire department, police department and the state fire marshal.

Several residents, who watched as crews worked, reported hearing a big boom in the neighborhood.

DeRaedt said there was at least one propane tank at the back of the house, but it has yet be determined whether that was the cause of the fire, or if a tank exploded as the fire spread.

Crews from Algonquin/Lake in the Hills, Huntley, Lakewood, East Dundee, McHenry Township, Nunda Rural, Cary, Wonder Lake and Fox River Grove crews assisted with the call.

Peter Rogala, who lives nearby, said he saw black smoke coming from the house when the fire first broke out.

"It was dark," Rogala said.
