Each year, 23five curates Activating The Medium around a specific theme that seeks to underscore the connectivity between artists working with various methods and materials. Previous festivals have explored field recording, mimesis, the architectural impact from sound, and many other concepts and themes. The 2011 festival explores the use of radio through composition and new media presentation. Looking back to the seminal works of Stockhausen, Cage, and Tenney through the culture jamming theatrics of Negativland and into the psychological minimalism of John Duncan, radio has served an invaluable and expressive tool within the continued history of avant-garde composition. Hence, 23five will present works including Richard Garet's grey-noise constructions mined from radio interference and electromagnetic disturbances and Byron Westbrook's multichannel diffusion of live transmission and reception of radio signals.
In addition, 23five will be presenting a radio series of additional works of composers using radio as source material with the intent of this being broadcast by means of radio.

Our new place in Middletown is smaller and we won’t have room for this huge tank. Some of the fish were pretty small when I got them, but have grown.
The tank is fresh water. The fish are healthy. They haven’t had any disease or problems in over two years. As it is, the tank is almost self sustaining. Besides the daily feedings, I clean the filter and top off the water maybe every six weeks or so.
The dimensions of the tank and stand are 16”x50”x50”.
The stand is 16” deep, but with spacing, it stands 18” from the wall. The stand is 50” wide, the tank is just a bit shorter.
The stand is maybe 30” high and the tank is probably about 20” high.

Volunteer Uganda 2014 Teaching and Orphanage program
Volunteer in one of two local orphanages in the Wakiso district, located outside of the city of Kampala. The village orphanage and school not only provide a home and safe haven this is where the children have classes.
Most of these children have lost parents to HIV/Aids. Some have been abandoned, and they know abuse, hunger and fear. The orphanage strives to provide a better future for some of the most vulnerable children in Uganda. As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; getting them ready for school, brushing teeth, reading to them. After-school activates you can play games, arrange activities, create arts & crafts projects and share your time and caring with these wonderful children.
Prior experience not necessary, volunteers should have a lot of patience, an open mind and a sense of compassion. The children range in age from 3yrs-13yrs old.
