FEC train 103 splits the MP 168 intermediates near City Point on their way south to Fort Pierce, FL.
The new main on the right of the train is complete but it has not been activated yet. This extention runs between the new Cocoa Junction control point (this CP still hasn't been activated as well) to CP Frontenac. Frontenac used to be the south end of the Titusville double track and with Brightline’s project occurring, FEC decided to double track this section between Cocoa Junction and Frontenac as it didn't make sense for a small 2-4 mile stretch of single track to remain between the two CPs. This will likely help reduce bottlenecking and traffic slowdowns while the unit train arrives at City Point each weekday morning. For example, the 103 seen here had to wait until 336 and 915 cleared the main before they were able to proceed south.
Rigging a new device in an active Space-Time Overlap Event is incredibly difficult. Cut the blue wire... no wait a minute... the blue wire was the red wire before...the red wire was the detonator!!!

All the photos I present were taken on the beaches of Taormina and its surroundings (Sicily-Italy); I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography");
... I photographed young and old people ... with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the sea to swim (even if the sea water is still a little cold now ...); I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the beaches ... in search of fleeting moments ...
I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle spiagge di Taormina e dintorni (Sicilia-Italia); ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”);
ho fotografato persone giovani e meno giovani…con tanta voglia di mare e tanta voglia di immergersi in mare per fare qualche nuotata (anche se l’acqua del mare adesso è ancora un po’ fredda…); ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.---------------------------------------------------------

I got that same feeling this weekend in Traverse City when I watched this male Snowy Owl cruise past me with no sound whatsoever! Again, totally blown away!

I made photos related to "street photography";
I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;
I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
I met a lady no longer young, who told me that, when she was seven years old, she met Salvatore Giuliano, the bandit (!) on Mount Ziretto (a mountain that is located above Taormina, in the territory of Castelmola), in telling she looked up and pointed at him, it seemed she was seeing him at that precise moment ....! (ah! if only I had had a special camera to capture the images that at that moment were resurfacing in the mind of that very nice lady ....!), she described it and ... she saw it (!): if she remembers it tall, handsome man, boots that reached mid-leg, rifle over his shoulder ....! and then the lady added: of course, I didn't know who that man was, they told me this afterwards ....! I photographed what I believe was a small advertising shoot, thanks to the availability of the photographer and the models (thank you for giving me some of their precious time ..!).

ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;
ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ... ho incontrato una signora non più giovane, che mi ha raccontato che, quando aveva l'età di sette anni, incontrò il bandito Salvatore Giuliano (!) sul monte Ziretto (un monte che si trova sopra Taormina, nel territorio di Castelmola), nel raccontare lei guardava in alto e lo indicava, sembrava lo stesse vedendo in quel preciso momento....! (ah! se solo io avessi avuto una macchina fotografica speciale per catturare le immagini che in quel momento andavano riaffiorando nella mente di quella simpaticissima signora....!), lo descriveva e...lo vedeva (!): se lo ricorda alto, un bell'uomo, gli stivali che arrivavano a metà gamba, il fucile in spalla....! e poi la signora aggiunse: certo, io non sapevo chi fosse quell'uomo, questo me lo hanno detto dopo....! Ho fotografato quello che credo fosse un piccolo shooting pubblicitario, grazie alla disponibilità della fotografa e delle modelle (le ringrazio per avermi concesso un pò del loro prezioso tempo..!).

Even in Sicily bad weather has arrived, now as I write, there is a furious storm in progress, yesterday "it was raining ashes" coming from a giant cloud spit from the Etna volcano .... (always umbrellas ... it is ....!) ... but until yesterday .... (except for a few rainy days) the good weather and, thanks to the warm sirocco and libeccio winds, coming from Africa ... have enticed the swimmers (among them the many tourists present in Taormina and surroundings ... ) to go to the beaches; certainly the situation has changed compared to the hottest months of July and August, in which months the beaches were always very crowded, in the last days of the end of October, however, the beaches presented themselves with the most distant bathers .... with presences constant, but not excessive.
..... with this series that I am about to post, with the arrival of the bad season, at least for this year, I abandon the photographs taken on the beaches.

Anche in Sicilia è arrivato il cattivo tempo, ora mentre scrivo, c’è un furioso temporale in corso, ieri “pioveva cenere” proveniente da una gigantesca nuvola sputata dal vulcano Etna….(sempre di ombrelli…si tratta….!) …ma fino ad avant’ieri….(tranne qualche giornata piovosa) il bel tempo e, complici i venti caldi di scirocco e di libeccio, provenienti dall’Africa… hanno invogliato i bagnanti (tra questi i molti turisti presenti a Taormina e dintorni…) a frequentare le spiagge; certamente è cambiata la situazione rispetto ai mesi più caldi di luglio e di agosto, nei quali mesi le spiagge erano sempre molto affollate, in questi ultimi giorni di fine ottobre invece le spiagge si sono presentate con i bagnanti più distanti tra loro….con presenze costanti, ma non eccessive.
….. con questa serie che mi appresto a postare, con l’arrivo oramai della brutta stagione, almeno per quest’anno, abbandono le fotografie colte sulle spiagge.

The volcano Etna, in recent days has shown an intense eruptive activity, even with intense phenomena called "lava fountains", continuous jet emissions persisted intensely for many minutes, of very high "fountains" of incandescent magma, very spectacular and uncommon, in particular, which took place on 23-02 at night, it reached exceptional dimensions and heights; I photographed that spectacular eruptions using a telephoto lens, from Taormina; I photographed Jakub Rizman, an excellent harp player, who spread sweet notes throughout the main square of Taormina, creating a fairytale atmosphere (on YouTube I found some musical performances of him);
these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...

il vulcano Etna, nei giorni scorsi ha mostrato una intensa attività eruttiva, anche con intensi fenomeni chiamati "fontane di lava", emissioni a getto continuo perdurate intensamente per molti minuti, di altissime "fontane" di magma incandescente, molto spettacolari e non comuni, una in particolare, avvenuta il 23-02 di notte, ha raggiunto dimensioni e altezze eccezionali; ho fotografato da Taormina quelle spettacolari eruzioni, usando un teleobiettivo; ho fotografato Jakub Rizman, un eccellente suonatore d'arpa, che ha diffuso dolcissime note per tutta la piazza principale di Taormina, creando un'atmosfera da favola (su YouTube ho trovato alcune sue esibizioni musicali);
sono queste solo alcune storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

My health company, every three months, for three days, sends me to cover a shortage of staff, in the Lipari hospital, (and so do my colleagues), in the little free time I have available, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion.
Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Islands (they are located north of Sicily, one hour by hydrofoil from Milazzo); Lipari, under the fascist dictatorship, was the seat of forced confinement for political opponents, it was considered "a Sicilian Alcatraz", among all the islands of confinement, Lipari was most likely the most liveable, both for its considerable size that favored the relations of the confined with the inhabitants, both because, to a greater extent than elsewhere, in Lipari, confined persons were allowed to live in private residences, together with their families or other companions. I found written: "Being on an island that belongs to another island means feeling doubly foreign, tied to the will of the gods and nature, where every certainty can be swept away by the waves of that sea that laps it in every intimate part, but it is a sensation that lasts for a few minutes, the Liparoti (the inhabitants of Lipari, ed) know it well (as all Sicilians know), the Greek concept of Xenia, hospitality, is inherent in them, a written rule, is a duty that provides sanctity and protection for the guest ".
Lipari has a long history as a place of detention. It is the island where the common criminals were initially confined, then with the law of November 6, 1926 (the twenty-year fascist period begins with the seizure of power by fascism and Mussolini, officially occurred on October 31, 1922), Lipari thus became the a place to isolate and confine opponents; the life of the confined began immediately after disembarkation, with lodging in the dormitories of the Castle, under the strict surveillance of the police and the fascist militia, every morning, the confined were subjected to the appeal and they received a daily pay of 10 lire; they could move freely in the town, without however exceeding the demarcation line that surrounded the inhabited center; walking was the main activity, the saddest and most melancholy ones pushed to the limit allowed, to see the ferries arrive from Milazzo, aware that the sea was guarded by motorboats armed with machine guns. A situation that will not prevent Nitti, Rosselli and Lussu from fleeing the island, on a moonless night, between 27 and 28 July 1929.
I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the streets of Lipari ... in search of fleeting moments ...I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production
La mia azienda sanitaria, ogni tre mesi, per tre giorni, mi manda a ricoprire una carenza di organico, nell’ospedale di Lipari, (e così anche i miei colleghi), nel poco tempo libero che mi resta a disposizione, mi dedico alla mia passione fotografica.
Lipari è l’isola più grande delle isole Eolie (si trovano a nord della Sicilia, ad un’ora di aliscafo da Milazzo); Lipari , sotto la dittatura fascista, fu sede di confino coatto per gli oppositori politici, essa era considerata “un’Alcatraz siciliana”, fra tutte le isole di confino, Lipari fu molto probabilmente quella più vivibile, sia per le sue notevoli dimensioni che favorivano i rapporti dei confinati con gli abitanti, sia perché, in misura maggiore che altrove, a Lipari veniva consentito ai confinati di abitare in residenze private, insieme ai propri familiari o ad altri compagni. Ho trovato scritto: “Trovarsi su un Isola che appartiene a un’altra Isola, vuol dire sentirsi doppiamente straniero, legato al volere degli dei e della natura, dove ogni certezza può essere spazzata via dalle onde di quel mare che la lambisce in ogni intima parte, ma è una sensazione che dura solo per qualche minuto, i Liparoti (gli abitanti di lipari, n.d.r.)lo sanno bene (come lo sanno tutti i siciliani), è connaturato in loro il concetto greco della Xenia, l'ospitalità, non è una norma scritta, è un atto dovuto che prevede sacralità e protezione per l’ospite”.
Lipari ha una lunga storia come luogo di detenzione. È l’isola dove all’inizio erano confinati i delinquenti comuni, poi con la legge del 6 novembre 1926 (il ventennio fascista inizia con la presa del potere del fascismo e di Mussolini, ufficialmente avvenuta il 31 ottobre 1922), Lipari divenne così il luogo dove isolare e confinare gli oppositori; la vita del confinato iniziava subito dopo lo sbarco, con l’alloggio nelle camerate del Castello, sotto la rigida sorveglianza della polizia e della milizia fascista, ogni mattina, i confinati erano sottoposti all’appello e alla consegna della "mazzetta", ossia la paga giornaliera di 10 lire; potevano circolare liberamente nel paese, senza però superare la linea di demarcazione che circondava il centro abitato; passeggiare era la principale attività, i più tristi e malinconici si spingevano fino al limite consentito per vedere arrivare i traghetti da Milazzo, consapevoli che il mare era sorvegliato da motoscafi armati di mitragliatrici. Situazione che non impedirà a Nitti, Rosselli e Lussu di fuggire dall’isola, in una notte senza luna, tra il 27 e il 28 luglio del 1929.
Ho realizzato dei foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per le strade di Lipari... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.

... every two months, my Provincial Health Authority of Messina (Sicily) sends me on a mission for three days (from Taormina) to the Civil Hospital of Lipari, located in via Saint Anne ... In my spare time, free from commitments of work, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion; the photographs I present here were all taken in February of this year 2022; I took photos according to the dictates of street photography, I made some portraits, having always met people in the hand and very willing to let themselves be photographed (maybe ... that the islanders are open-minded, eager and used to communicate with strangers ..?!), some portraits were made of people intent on their work, some fishermen were intent on repairing their nets, a lady showed me one of her beautiful work, a blanket she made with knitting needles , hanging on her balcony (it reminded me of the shawls my grandmother made, also made with hand knitting needles); all the photos were taken in the city of Lipari, except three, taken in the dark in the port of Milazzo, the port of departure and arrival with hydrofoils (but there is also the ship) for the Aeolian Islands.
….ogni due mesi, la mia Azienda Sanitaria Provinciale di Messina, mi manda in missione per tre giorni (da Taormina) all’Ospedale Civile di Lipari, situato in via Sant’Anna …Nei ritagli di tempo, libero dagli impegni di lavoro, mi dedico alla mia passione fotografica; le fotografie che qui presento sono state tutte realizzate nel mese di febbraio di quest’anno 2022; ho realizzato foto secondo i dettami della fotografia di strada (street photography), ho realizzato alcuni ritratti, avendo incontrato sempre persone alla mano e molto disponibili nel lasciarsi fotografare (sarà forse…che la gente isolana è di mentalità aperta, desiderosa ed abituata a comunicare con gli estranei..?!), alcuni ritratti sono stati eseguiti a persone intente nei loro lavori, alcuni pescatori erano intenti a riparare le loro reti, una signora mi ha mostrato un suo bellissimo lavoro, una coperta da lei realizzata coi ferri a maglia, appesa nel suo balcone (mi ricordava gli scialli che realizzava mia nonna, anch’essi realizzati coi ferri a mano); tutte le foto sono state realizzate nella città di Lipari, tranne tre, realizzate col buio nel porto di Milazzo, scalo di partenza e di arrivo con gli aliscafi (ma c’è anche la nave) per le isole Eolie.

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina (Sicilia);
ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;
ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

In the past couple of years the Toyota logistic center of Chignolo Po has significantly increased the workload.
Beyond the regular import services from Valenciennes and Kolin, both managed by Mercitalia from the border stations till the destination, a new domestic service has been now activated in order to transfer the brand-new car southbound to Piedimonte San Germano (Cassino).
The new train is managed through an "unprecedented" cooperation between Dinazzano Po (Diesel traction from Chignolo to Piacenza) and CFI (Electric traction from Piacenza to Latium.)
Here DPO D744.106 has just left Chignolo running eastbound towards Casalpusterlengo were the branch from Pavia will join the mainline from Milano.

This "photographic story" ideally follows the previous one, for two reasons, first because in this case too, as in the previous story we talk about "angels", they are the "Golden Angels" of San Pier Niceto (in the province of Messina), and second, because this singular and beautiful religious festival, with its procession, also takes place during the Easter period, specifically during "Holy Tuesday". The photographs that I post (not a few, I wish in this way to pay homage to the inhabitants of San Pier Niceto, who can find themselves in these photos, especially for those fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, in seeing their beloved and very sweet "angels - angiolette"); if you look closely at some of the photographed subjects, you will notice a "temporal disconnect", in fact in some cases, the same girls are present, with two different ages, they will be dressed differently, this is because the photos were taken during Holy Tuesday of 2024 and that of 2025. The temporal sequence of the photographs does not take into account either the year in which they were taken, nor the moments attributable to the phases of the ceremony and subsequent procession.
In San Pier Niceto, on the Peloritani Mountains in Sicily, during the Holy Tuesday takes place the SS. Crucifix procession, whose roots are ancient. The Church of St. James houses and cares for the precious Crucifix, Which is brought to the procession by the streets of the country preceded by very young children, of both sexes, who imitate little Angels, Angels and Grieving young Nuns, dressed in elaborate dresses covered with many gold jewelery, sewn by handy hands that with pins, necklaces , Bracelets and many other gold jewelry applied to their little clothes, they make real works of art whose designs are reminiscent of Easter symbols. Gold for dressing is collected home from home by people who have to melt a "vote", gold that will be returned at the end of the procession. Everything begins during Lent when parents decide to dress their baby by little Angels, Angels or Grieving Nuns .The Little Angels are usually 3 or 4 year olds, the Angels are a little bigger, the Nuns are little young girls. Thus the preparations for the elaboration of the elaborate clothes begin: Parents during Lent are knocking at every door of the country, among friends and relatives, to borrow bracelets, brooches, necklaces and all the gold necessary for the composition of embroidery . The Little Angel's dress is white, short down to the knee, made up of a gold-plated bodice and a skirt with some golden embroidery; Arms are adorned by bracelets, the head is adorned by a collier, small wings (white dove feathers) sprout from behind. The Angels have a white tunic, on which sacred icons are embroidered in gold, the head is covered by a collier, wings lie on their shoulders. The Nun's dress is black, on which are stitched the crowns of the S.S. Rosary, on the head is placed a white veil, held by a rose crown. At 16:30 on Holy Tuesday, a tapping of bells together with the band's fanfare in the village, set off at the "Crucifixion Procession" of San Pier Niceto: at the foot of the Crucifix there are red roses, behind it are located branches of cypress (at the end of the event the faithful will carry with them a piece of cypress as a relic), finally the red ribbons are tied to the arms of the Crucifix, they will mark the procession of the procession until the arrival at the Mother Church, a century church to St. Peter the Apostle, where the celebration of the Holy Mass will take place (the reverse path will bring the SS Crucifix to the Church of St. James): in perfect order the faithful in religious silence, with votive candles in their hands, walk the streets of the country never crossing the red ribbons as they delimit the path of the Golden Little Angels, Angels and the Grieving young Nuns .
Questo "racconto fotografico" segue idealmente il precedente, per due motivi, innanzitutto perchè anche in questo caso, come nel racconto precedente si parla di "angeli", sono "gli Angioletti d'oro" di San Pier Niceto (in provincia di Messina), e secondo, perchè questa singolare e bella festa religiosa, con la sua processione, si svolge anch'essa durante il periodo pasquale, nello specifico durante il "Martedì Santo". Le fotografie che posto (non poche, desidero in tal modo omaggiare gli abitanti di San Pier Niceto, che possano ritrovarsi in queste foto, soprattutto per quei papà, mamme, nonni, nonne, zie e zii, nel rivedere i loro adorati e dolcissimi "angioletti - angiolette"); a ben guardare in alcuni dei soggetti fotografati, si noterà uno "scollamento temportale", infatti in qualche caso, sono presenti le stessi bimbe, con due età diverse, saranno vestite diversamente, questo perchè le foto sono state realizzate durante il Martedì Santo del 2024 e quello del 2025. La sequenza temporale delle fotografie non tiene conto nè dell'anno nel quale sono state realizzate, nè dei momenti ascrivibili alle fasi della cerimonia e successiva processione.
A San Pier Niceto, sui monti Peloritani in Sicilia, durante il Martedì Santo prende vita la processione per le vie del paese del SS. Crocifisso, le cui radici sono antichissime. La Chiesa di San Giacomo ospita e custodisce il pregevole Crocifisso, che viene portato in processione per le vie del paese preceduto da bambini anche molto piccoli, di entrambi i sessi, che impersonano Angioletti ed Addoloratine vestiti con elaboratissimi abiti ricoperti con tantissimi monili d’oro, cuciti dalle mani abili di sarte che con spille, collane, bracciali e tanti altri monili in oro applicati sui loro piccoli vestiti, realizzano vere opere d’arte i cui disegni ricordano simboli pasquali. L’oro per la realizzazione dei vestitini viene raccolto di casa in casa da persone che hanno da sciogliere un “voto”, oro che verrà restituito alla fine della processione. Tutto ha inizio durante la Quaresima, quando dei genitori decidono per “voto” di vestire il proprio bambino da Angioletto, Angiolone o Monachella.
Gli Angioletti sono solitamente bimbi di 3 o 4 anni, gli Angioloni sono un po’ più grandi, le Monachelle sono delle bambine. Così iniziano i preparativi per la realizzazione degli elaboratissimi vestiti: i genitori durante la Quaresima bussano ad ogni porta del paese, tra la cerchia di amici e parenti, per prendere in prestito bracciali, spille, collane e tutto l’oro necessario alla composizione dei ricami. Il vestito degli Angioletti è bianco, corto fino al ginocchio, composto da un corpetto ricoperto d’oro ed una gonna segnata da alcuni ricami d’oro; le braccia sono adornate da bracciali, la testa è adornata da un collier, da dietro le spalle spuntano delle piccole ali (piume di colomba bianca). Gli Angioloni hanno una tunica bianca sulla quale vengono ricamate delle icone sacre in oro, la testa è cinta da un collier, sulle spalle trovano posto delle ali. Il vestito delle Monachelle invece è nero, sul quale vengono cucite delle coroncine del S.S. Rosario, sul capo viene posto un velo bianco, trattenuto da una corona di rose. Alle 16:30 del Martedì Santo un rintocco di campane insieme alla fanfare della banda del paese, danno il via alla “Processione del Crocifisso” di San Pier Niceto: ai piedi della Croce vi sono delle rose rosse, dietro di essa trovano posto dei rami di cipresso (alla fine dell’evento i fedeli porteranno con se un pezzetto di rametto come reliquia), infine dei nastri rossi vengono legati alle braccia del Crocifisso, essi segneranno il percorso della processione, fino all’arrivo al Duomo, una chiesa cinquecentesca dedicata a San Pietro apostolo, ove si terrà la celebrazione della Santa Messa ( il percorso inverso riporterà il S.S. Crocifisso nella Chiesa di San Giacomo): in perfetto ordine i fedeli in religioso silenzio, con ceri votivi in mano, percorrono le vie del paese, non oltrepassando i nastri rossi poiché essi delimitano il percorso degli Angioletti d’oro e delle Addoloratine.

Good Friday is an anniversary which in Sicily acquires a cathartic meaning for those who are searching, not only photographically, for popular traditions (we find them widespread throughout Sicily), which are nothing other than a social, cultural event, which merge into a single past and present; from the web "popular traditions are a historical memory linked to customs and rituals that have given shape to the values and beliefs of that culture". Easter in Sicily can be a source of research, it can appear not without contradictions, citing the thoughts of that great Sicilian thinker Leonardo Sciascia, for him Sicily cannot be called Christian referring to the Sicilian festivals, at most it is only in appearance, in those properly pagan explosions tolerated by the Church; Sciascia addresses the topic as an introductory essay in the book "Religious celebrations in Sicily", illustrated with photographs of a young and still unknown Ferdinando Scianna, a book that did not fail to raise some controversy due to the Sicilian thinker's introductory note, thus being in open controversy with the sacredness of that popular Sicilian devotion (the book was criticized by the Holy See newspaper, the Osservatore Romano), Sciascia writes: “what is a religious festival in Sicily? It would be easy to answer that it is anything but a religious holiday. It is, first of all, an existential explosion; the explosion of the collective id, where the collectivity exists only at the level of the id. Since it is only during the celebration that the Sicilian emerges from his condition of a single man, which is the condition of his vigilant and painful superego, to find himself part of a class, of a class, of a city". This year, for Good Friday, I was looking for traditions that were "outside the most well-known circuits", in the past I have alternated traditional religious processions known, with lesser-known ones; I considered various possibilities, then I decided to go to a town that is described as being located in a remote and isolated location in the province of Messina, the town is Capizzi. Good Friday in Capizzi takes place in two phases, there is the daytime procession in which three floats are carried on the shoulders, that of the Ecce Homo, that of the Sorrowful Virgin, and that of the Pietà (with the Virgin Mary holding her Dead Son in her arms), then there is the afternoon procession, which continues until late in the evening, in this evening procession the float carrying the Ecce Homo is missing, while two others are added, there is the one with the Urn carrying the Dead Christ (this figure, that of the Dead Christ, in Capizzi, is called "Father of Divine Providence"), and there is the float carrying the "Holy Cross", on it, during the route along the streets of the town, you can see the villagers placing long linen sheets, who often lean out directly from the balconies or windows of their houses to place them over it. The procession is made up of devotees and local personalities, the police and Capizzi's musical band, and two brotherhoods, that of the SS. Sacrament (the brothers are recognizable by a light yellow cloak), and that of the Good Death (whose followers wear a black cloak); the procession advances along the route in absolute silence, silence is Sacred, the bells stop ringing, the procession walks slowly, an exception to the silence comes from the sad, mournful music played by the band and the drumbeats played in mourning; the route includes steep descents, and equally steep (and tiring) climbs. The afternoon-evening procession reaches the locality of "Tre Croci", here the Archpriest, Don Antonio, delivered his panegyric, using profound words, full of Hope, Charity, Love, remembering that Christ always forgives everyone. In the afternoon, in the Mother Church, the celebration of the Passion of Christ takes place; we witness the rite of the Adoration of the Holy Cross, and the veneration of the "Father of Divine Providence", subsequently there is the rite in which the Archpriest sprinkles the body of the Dead Christ with rose petals, and anoints it with perfumed oils (to recall what is written in the Gospel of John (19:38-42), Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus, secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate for permission to take the body of Jesus, Pilate agreed, but Nicodemus also joined Joseph, carrying about thirty kilos of a mixture of myrrh and aloe, sprinkling it on the body: they took the body of Jesus, wrapped it in bandages together with the aromas, according to the funeral custom of the Jews). During the rite of the Adoration of the Cross, in the Mother Church (and also in the Tre Croci area), there is a song sung by the young people of the village, who in chorus sing the “song of the improperia”, which would be in sung form the reproaches that Jesus Christ addresses to his people, because they were responsible for His crucifixion: it is therefore a plaintive dialogue between the crucified Christ and his people; this song dates back to the sixth century, having arrived in the West from the Church of Jerusalem.

Il Venerdì Santo è una ricorrenza che in Sicilia acquista un significato catartico per chi è alla ricerca, non solo fotografica, delle tradizioni popolari (le troviamo diffuse in tutta la Sicilia), che altro non sono che un evento sociale, culturale, che fondono in un tutt’uno passato e presente; dal web “le tradizioni popolari sono una memoria storica legata ad usanze e ritualità che hanno dato forma ai valori e alle credenze di quella cultura”. La Pasqua in Sicilia può essere fonte di ricerca, essa può apparire non priva di contraddizioni, citando il pensiero di quel grande pensatore Siciliano che fu Leonardo Sciascia, per lui la Sicilia non può dirsi cristiana riferendosi alle feste Siciliane, al massimo lo è solo in apparenza, in quelle esplosioni propriamente pagane, tollerate dalla Chiesa; Sciascia affronta l’argomento come saggio introduttivo nel libro “Feste religiose in Sicilia”, illustrato con fotografie di un giovane ed ancora sconosciuto Ferdinando Scianna, libro che non mancò di sollevare qualche polemica per la nota introduttiva del pensatore Siciliano, essendo così in aperta polemica con la sacralità di quella devozione popolare Siciliana (il libro fu oggetto di una stroncatura da parte del quotidiano della Santa Sede, l’Osservatore Romano), Sciascia scrive: “che cos’ è una festa religiosa in Sicilia? Sarebbe facile rispondere che è tutto, tranne che una festa religiosa. E’, innanzi tutto, un’esplosione esistenziale; l’esplosione dell’es collettivo, dove la collettività esiste soltanto a livello dell’es. Poiché e soltanto nella festa che il siciliano esce dalla sua condizione di uomo solo, che è poi la condizione del suo vigile e doloroso super io, per ritrovarsi parte di un ceto, di una classe, di una città ”. Altro pensatore, scrittore e poeta Siciliano, Gesualdo Bufalino, fornisce indicazioni interessanti sul senso che i Siciliani danno a questi eventi popolari tradizionali, egli dice “durante la Pasqua ogni siciliano si sente non solo uno spettatore, ma un attore, prima dolente e poi esultante, per un Mistero che è la sua stessa esistenza. Il tempo dell’evento è quello della Primavera, la stagione della metamorfosi, così come metamorfica è la natura stessa del rito nel quale, come in un racconto dell’Opera dei Pupi, si combatte la lotta del Bene contro il Male. Sono presenti l’Inganno, il Dolore e il Trionfo, la Passione, la Morte e la Resurrezione di Cristo”.
In breve, la Pasqua in Sicilia è una ricorrenza profondamente sentita in tutta l’isola fin dall’antichità, essa ha sempre avuto come fulcro la commossa partecipazione del popolo, con rappresentazioni e processioni divenuti riti e tradizioni che caratterizzano inequivocabilmente numerosissimi centri Siciliani, che rievocano i momenti più salienti narrati nei Vangeli e che ricordano la Passione, la Morte e la Resurrezione di Gesù Cristo, con cortei formati dalle varie confraternite (a volte con rievocazioni teatrali) che hanno in se contenuti e simbologie spesso provenienti dalla dominazione Spagnola, avvenuta in Sicilia tra il XVI ed il XVII secolo.
Quest’anno, per il Venerdì Santo, ero alla ricerca di tradizioni che fossero “al di fuori dei circuiti più noti”, in passato ho alternato processioni tradizionali religiose note, a quelle meno note; ho preso in considerazione diverse possibilità, poi ho deciso di recarmi in un paese che viene descritto essere situato in una località remota ed isolata della provincia di Messina, il paese è Capizzi. Il Venerdì Santo a Capizzi, si svolge in due fasi, c’è la processione diurna nella quale vengono portate in spalla tre vare, quella dell’Ecce Homo, quella della Vergine Addolorata, e quella della Pietà (con la Vergine Maria che tiene in braccio suo Figlio Morto), poi c’è la processione del pomeriggio, che prosegue fino a sera inoltrata, in questa processione serale manca la vara che reca l’Ecce Homo, mentre se ne aggiungono altre due, c’è quella con l’Urna che reca il Cristo Morto ( questa figura, quella del Cristo Morto, a Capizzi, viene chiamata “Padre della Divina Provvidenza”), e c’è la vara che reca la “Santa Croce”, su di essa, durante il percorso lungo le vie del paese, si assiste al poggiare di lunghe lenzuola di lino da parte dei paesani, che spesso si sporgono direttamente dai balconi o dalle finestre delle loro case per deporle a scavalco su di essa. La processione è formate, oltre che dai devoti e dalle personalità del paese, dalle forze dell’ordine e dalla banda musicale di Capizzi, da due confraternite, quella del SS. Sacramento (i confratelli sono riconoscibili da un mantello giallo chiaro), e quella della Buona Morte (i cui adepti recano un mantello nero); la processione avanza lungo il percorso in assoluto silenzio, il silenzio è Sacro, le campane smettono di suonare, la processione cammina lenta, una eccezione al silenzio proviene dalla musica mesta, triste, suonata dalla banda e dai colpi di tamburo suonati a lutto; il percorso prevede ripide discese, ed altrettanto ripide (e faticose) salite. La processione pomeridiana-serale giunge fino alla località “Tre Croci”, qui l’Arciprete, Don Antonio, ha proferito il suo panegirico, usando parole profonde, colme di Speranza, Carità, Amore, ricordando che Cristo perdona sempre, tutti. Il pomeriggio, in Chiesa Madre, si assiste alla celebrazione della Passione di Cristo; si assiste al rito dell’Adorazione della Santa Croce, ed alla venerazione del “Padre della Divina Provvidenza”, successivamente c’è il rito nel quale l’Arciprete cosparge il corpo del Cristo Morto con petali di rosa, e lo unge con olii profumati (a rievocare quante scritto nel Vangelo di Giovanni (19:38-42), Giuseppe di Arimatea, discepolo di Gesù, in segreto per timore dei Giudei, chiese a Pilato il permesso di prendere il corpo di Gesù, Pilato acconsentì, ma anche Nicodemo, si unì a Giuseppe, portando circa trenta chili di una mistura di mirra e di aloe, cospargendone il corpo: essi presero il corpo di Gesù, lo avvolsero in bende insieme con gli aromi, secondo l'usanza funebre dei Giudei). Durante il rito dell’Adorazione della Croce, in Chiesa Madre (ed anche in località Tre Croci), c’è il canto intonato dai giovani del paese, che in coro cantano il “canto degli improperia”, che sarebbe in forma cantata i rimproveri che Gesù Cristo rivolge al suo popolo, poiché si è reso responsabile della Sua crocifissione: esso è quindi un dialogo lamentoso tra Cristo crocifisso e il suo popolo; questo canto risalirebbero al VI secolo, giunto in occidente proveniente dalla Chiesa di Gerusalemme.

I’ve lived at the same Lassen County address for a couple decades and over those years have really enjoyed the diversity wildlife that visits. I’ve lost count of the number of different bird species I’ve seen on the property. These sightings have included American kestrels on several occasions and I’ve long known that these beautiful little raptors are cavity nesters that will use a properly built birdhouse. As a long time wood worker and lover of birds, I’ve built several bluebird houses that are on various trees around the property and all get used (although not always by bluebirds). In late winter 2025, I finally quite procrastinating and built a kestrel box like I’d been SAYING I was going to do for years. This nest box has a bit of backstory—it’s made from an oak tree that came down on our place during a winter storm. I milled some slabs out of it with a chainsaw mill (hard work!) and what you see here are a couple of the smaller “live edge” slabs that came from a large branch of the tree. I think the fact that the tree the house is built from lived its life 100 feet from where the house now hangs makes for added “cool factor!”
When spring arrived I was wonderfully surprised when the male you see here arrived and began checking out the potential new digs. I was even MORE wonderfully surprised when he attracted a mate and they began their fascinating nesting journey! Kestrel nesting behavior is pretty efficient: the female hunkers down deep in the cavity while the male does most of the hunting. Lizards, voles, big grasshoppers—they’re not picky, and they’re surprisingly effective little predators. Once she lays up to a half dozen eggs she incubates them for about a month when they hatch and remain in the nest for still another month or so before they fledge. While the hatchlings are growing they keep their parents very busy keeping them fed and I’ve greatly enjoyed watching this happen! I’ve been shooting nearly daily video by placing a camera atop a tall step ladder and letting it shoot intermittently for a few hours. Once I started seeing the little ones poking their heads out I figured I better get some decent stills as well. I captured this frame with the camera on the ladder mount while I hid nearby and triggered the camera remotely as Mr. Kestrel arrived with a blue tailed skink. By this time he’d become quite accustomed to the camera on the ladder but he wasn’t used to it making clicking sounds on the shutter activation so he turned to look when I fired a few shots, resulting in this capture.
There’s something especially rewarding about seeing a wild bird adopt something you built by hand, from wood off your own land. Getting to document that partnership—even for just a moment like this—feels like a pretty special privilege. This has been, without a doubt, the most fascinating thing I’ve ever done without even leaving the yard!

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;
I made photos related to "street photography";
I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;
I came across a mural whose faces were erased with a spray can: it was deliberately defaced, outraged, whoever did this, for political purposes and for reasons of opportunism, then published this gesture on Facebook, as if it were a trophy, causing serious damage not only to the whole community of Taormina, but also to anyone who comes to Taormina, who must be able to enjoy its natural, cultural and artistic beauties: now this mural created by the street artist TVBOY entitled "Saint Carola protectress of refugees" has been horribly mutilated by her beauty, but, even so ... it cannot fail to arouse emotion, because that black spray that has erased the faces, (to me) seems to have given the work even more voice, the voice of suffering of those who travel to other worlds, knowing they are going to meet enormous risks and a future full of uncertainties: a future as black as that spray; so I wanted to know (and photograph) the other two murals by TVBOY, an artist of Sicilian origins, one depicts the pop singer Mahmood, a work entitled "San Mahmood", the other work is titled "Homage to the master Andrea Camilleri";
I photographed the spectacular eruption of the Etna volcano which took place on the evening of 01/18-2021, using a telephoto lens;
these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.
Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina;
ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;
mi sono imbattuto in un murales i cui volti sono stati cancellati con una bomboletta spray: è stato volutamente deturpato, oltraggiato, chi ha fatto ciò, per scopi politici e per motivi di opportunismo, ha poi pubblicato tale gesto su Facebook, come se fosse un trofeo, arrecando un danno gravissimo non solo a tutta la comunità di Taormina, ma anche a chiunque venga a Taormina, che deve poter godere delle sue bellezze naturali, culturali ed artistiche: adesso questo murales realizzato ad opera dello street artist TVBOY intitolato “Santa Carola protettrice dei rifugiati” è stato orrendamente mutilato della sua bellezza, ma, anche così…non può non suscitare commozione, perché quello spray nero che ha cancellato i volti, (a me) sembra aver dato all’opera ancora più voce, la voce della sofferenza di chi si mette in viaggio verso altri mondi, sapendo di andare incontro a enormi rischi e ad un futuro colmo di incertezze: un futuro nero come quello spray; ho voluto così conoscere (e fotografare) gli altri due murales di TVBOY, artista di origini siciliane, uno raffigura il cantante pop Mahmood, opera intitolata “San Mahmood”, l’altra opera si intitola “Omaggio al maestro Andrea Camilleri”;
Ho fotografato la spettacolare eruzione del vulcano Etna avvenuta la sera del 18-01-2021, utilizzando un teleobiettivo;
sono queste solo alcune storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.

The photographs were all taken in July-August 2022, on the beaches of the east coast of Sicily, and of the Ionian coast of Calabria.

All the photos I present were taken on the two suggestive beaches overlooking Taormina, the Isola Bella beach and the Mazzarò bay beach respectively; these two beaches, both known for their enchanting beauty, have been the scene of stories that few know, time has only partially healed ancient tears; Mazzarò was chosen by a family of unfortunate Jews made up of four people, who, persecuted by the Nazi-Fascist ferocity, decided to commit suicide by tying all four together with a rope, then weighed down with stones, they let themselves slip from a boat into the deep waters near the Mazzarò rock, called “Scogghia Longa”; the "Isola Bella" (its original name was "rock of Santo Stefano") was named by an English noblewoman, Lady Florence Trevelyan, a relative of Queen Victoria, who did so much for Taormina (a woman of truly extraordinary qualities), tells of a young English officer who died on a ship on which he was embarked, a Brigantine who patrolled the Strait of Messina to discourage Napoleonic soldiers from disembarking from Calabria in Sicily, the captain out of respect for the Royal Family (to which, let's remember, Lady Florence belonged), instead of entrusting her body to the sea as was the custom at the time, she had it buried on top of the island. I made photos related to "beach photography" (a genre similar to "street photography"); I have photographed young and old people… with a great desire for the sea and a great desire to dive into the water to do some swimming; I made some photo-portraits of people I did not know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking on the beaches ... in search of fleeting fleeting moments ...

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate sulle due suggestive spiagge prospicienti Taormina, rispettivamente la spiaggia dell’Isola Bella, e la spiaggia della baia di Mazzarò; queste due spiagge, entrambe conosciute per la loro incantevole bellezza, sono state teatro di storie che pochi conoscono, il tempo ha solo in parte guarito antiche lacrime; Mazzarò fu scelta da una famiglia di sventurati ebrei composta da quattro persone, i quali, perseguitati dalla ferocia nazi-fascista, decisero di suicidarsi legandosi tutti e quattro tra loro con una corda, poi appesantiti con pietre, si lasciarono scivolare da una barca nelle profonde acque nei pressi dello scoglio di Mazzarò, chiamato “scogghia Longa”; l’Isola Bella (il suo nome originario era “scoglio di Santo Stefano”) fu così chiamata da un nobildonna inglese, lady Florence Trevelyan, parente della regina Vittoria, che tanto si prodigò per Taormina (una donna dalle qualità veramente straordinarie), si narra di un giovane ufficiale inglese che morì su di una nave sulla quale era imbarcato, un Brigantino che pattugliava lo stretto di Messina per scoraggiare i soldati Napoleonici dallo sbarcare dalla Calabria in Sicilia, il capitano per rispetto della Famiglia Reale (alla quale, ricordiamoci, apparteneva lady Florence), invece di affidarne il corpo al mare come si usava all’epoca, lo fece seppellire in cima all’Isola. Ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “beach photography” (un genere affine alla “street photography”); ho fotografato persone giovani e meno giovani…con tanta voglia di mare e tanta voglia di immergersi in acqua per fare qualche nuotata; ho realizzato alcuni foto-ritratti di persone che non conoscevo, le ringrazio veramente tanto per la loro simpatia e la loro disponibilità; ho cercato di cogliere al volo l’essenza di storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando sulle spiagge... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...
Ho utilizzato per alcune fotografie una tecnica fotografica particolare al momento dello scatto, che oltre a catturare lo spazio circostante, ha "inserito" anche una dimensione temporale, con foto caratterizzate dall’essere mosse poiché volutamente sono stati allungati i tempi di esposizione, sono confuse-sfocate-imprecise-indecise...il termine anglosassone che racchiude con una sola parola questo genere fotografico è "blur", queste immagini sono state così realizzate in fase di scatto, e non come un effetto creato successivamente, a posteriori, in fase di post-produzione.---------------------------------------------------------

All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;
I made photos related to "street photography";
I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;
I came across a mural whose faces were erased with a spray can: it was deliberately defaced, outraged, whoever did this, for political purposes and for reasons of opportunism, then published this gesture on Facebook, as if it were a trophy, causing serious damage not only to the whole community of Taormina, but also to anyone who comes to Taormina, who must be able to enjoy its natural, cultural and artistic beauties: now this mural created by the street artist TVBOY entitled "Saint Carola protectress of refugees" has been horribly mutilated by her beauty, but, even so ... it cannot fail to arouse emotion, because that black spray that has erased the faces, (to me) seems to have given the work even more voice, the voice of suffering of those who travel to other worlds, knowing they are going to meet enormous risks and a future full of uncertainties: a future as black as that spray; so I wanted to know (and photograph) the other two murals by TVBOY, an artist of Sicilian origins, one depicts the pop singer Mahmood, a work entitled "San Mahmood", the other work is titled "Homage to the master Andrea Camilleri";
I photographed the spectacular eruption of the Etna volcano which took place on the evening of 01/18-2021, using a telephoto lens;
these are just a few minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street ... in search of fleeting moments ...
For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.
Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina;
ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;
ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo mai incontrato prima, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;
mi sono imbattuto in un murales i cui volti sono stati cancellati con una bomboletta spray: è stato volutamente deturpato, oltraggiato, chi ha fatto ciò, per scopi politici e per motivi di opportunismo, ha poi pubblicato tale gesto su Facebook, come se fosse un trofeo, arrecando un danno gravissimo non solo a tutta la comunità di Taormina, ma anche a chiunque venga a Taormina, che deve poter godere delle sue bellezze naturali, culturali ed artistiche: adesso questo murales realizzato ad opera dello street artist TVBOY intitolato “Santa Carola protettrice dei rifugiati” è stato orrendamente mutilato della sua bellezza, ma, anche così…non può non suscitare commozione, perché quello spray nero che ha cancellato i volti, (a me) sembra aver dato all’opera ancora più voce, la voce della sofferenza di chi si mette in viaggio verso altri mondi, sapendo di andare incontro a enormi rischi e ad un futuro colmo di incertezze: un futuro nero come quello spray; ho voluto così conoscere (e fotografare) gli altri due murales di TVBOY, artista di origini siciliane, uno raffigura il cantante pop Mahmood, opera intitolata “San Mahmood”, l’altra opera si intitola “Omaggio al maestro Andrea Camilleri”;
Ho fotografato la spettacolare eruzione del vulcano Etna avvenuta la sera del 18-01-2021, utilizzando un teleobiettivo;
sono queste solo alcune storie fotografiche minime, raccolte camminando per la strada ... alla ricerca di attimi fugaci s-fuggenti ...

11 years have passed since I was last in the Sicilian town of Alcara Li Fusi, for me it is easy to know, I just need to see when I took the photographs of the double and contemporary anniversary held in Alcara Li Fusi, photographs that I have posted at the time on Flickr, they are two holidays that are celebrated on the same day of June 24, both holidays proceed together and parallel without ever mixing with each other, one dates back to an ancient pagan rite, the other is a purely religious occasion, probably in the past the Church tried to suppress the pagan rite by superimposing the cult for San Giovanni, but in fact this fortunately did not happen, so that in the early afternoon until the early evening we witness the procession for San Giovanni, while with the late evening arrival we witness the pagan rite of “Muzzuni”: the photographs that I present here try to describe what I saw in Alcara Li Fusi on June 24th. The "feast of Muzzuni" originates from an ancient pagan rite, on the brochures we read that this is the oldest popular festival in Italy, with characteristics that seem to originate from the Hellenic civilization, enclosing ancient rites from the peasant world, as a rite propitiatory turned towards the fertility of the earth, in a broad sense it is aimed at love, nature, rebirth (U 'Muzzuni others is only a phallic symbol); the term "Muzzuni" which would seem to have similarities "with the severed head" of St. John the Baptist, actually comes either from the "neckless jug" or refers to the mowed and collected wheat in bundles called "mazzuna"; this propitiatory rite that has come down to us, is of Greek and profane origin, it was imported by the ancient peoples who arrived in Sicily and from the Minor States of Greece: these peoples venerated rural divinities, among these Demeter (of the Earth), Kore (of Vegetation), Aphrodite (of Love), Adonis (of Fertility), and Dionysus (of Euphoria), these populations maintained these cults in the territories they colonized, and this is how their survival in Alcara Li Fusi is explained ; in the streets that cross the town small altars are prepared, on them will be placed "U 'Muzzuni" which is therefore a jug with a stub neck, from which ears of corn and carnations emerge, covered with a silk scarf and adorned with gold which belong to the families of the neighborhood, the walls of these altars are adorned with typical carpets woven with a pedal loom (the Pizzare), on the Pizza plates are placed with the "Laureddi", which are stalks of wheat sprouted in the dark; this "the pagan component", then there is the "Christian component", dedicated to the beheaded martyr Saint, St. John the Baptist.
Sono passati ben 11 anni da quando sono stato l’ultima volta nel paese siciliano di Alcara Li Fusi, per me è facile saperlo, mi basta vedere quando feci le fotografie della doppia e contemporanea ricorrenza che si tiene ad Alcara Li Fusi, fotografie che ho postato a suo tempo su Flickr, sono due feste che si celebrano lo stesso giorno del 24 giugno, entrambe le feste procedono insieme e parallele senza mai mischiarsi tra loro, una risale ad un antichissimo rito pagano, l’altra è una ricorrenza prettamente religiosa, probabilmente in passato la Chiesa ha tentato di sopprimere il rito di origine pagana sovrapponendovi il culto per San Giovanni, però nei fatti questo fortunatamente non è avvenuto, cosicché nel primo pomeriggio fino ad inizio sera si assiste alla processione per San Giovanni, mentre con l’arrivo della sera inoltrata inoltrata si assiste al rito pagano del “Muzzuni”: le fotografie che qui presento cercano di descrivere quanto ho visto ad Alcara Li Fusi il 24 giugno. La “festa del Muzzuni” origina da un antico rito pagano, sui depliants si legge che questa è la festa popolare più antica d’Italia, con caratteristiche che sembrano originare dalla civiltà ellenica, racchiudendo in se antichi riti provenienti dal mondo contadino, come rito propiziatorio rivolto verso la fertilità della terra, in senso lato esso è rivolto all’amore, alla natura, alla rinascita (U’ Muzzuni altri non è che un simbolo fallico); il termine “Muzzuni” che sembrerebbe avere delle analogie “con la testa mozzata” di San Giovanni Battista, in realtà proviene o dalla “brocca priva di collo” oppure fa riferimento al grano falciato e raccolto in fasci detti “mazzuna”; questo rito propiziatorio che è giunto fino a noi, è di origine greca e profana, esso è stato importato dagli antichi popoli giunti in Sicilia e provenienti dagli Stati Minori della Grecia: questi popoli veneravano divinità agresti, tra questi Demetra (della Terra), Kore (della Vegetazione), Afrodite (dell’Amore), Adone (della Fertilità), e Dioniso (dell’Euforia), tali popolazioni mantennero tali culti nei territori da essi colonizzati, ed è così che si spiega la loro sopravvivenza ad Alcara Li Fusi; nelle stradine che attraversano il paese vengono preparati piccoli altari, su di essi verrà messo “U’ Muzzuni” che quindi è una brocca col collo mozzo, dal quale fuoriescono spighe di grano e garofani, rivestita con un foulard di seta ed adornata con gli ori che appartengono alle famiglie del quartiere, le pareti di questi altari sono adornate con dei tipici tappeti tessuti col telaio a pedale (le Pizzare), sulle Pizzare vengono poggiati i piatti con i “Laureddi”, che sono steli di grano germogliati al buio; questa “la componente pagana”, poi c’è la “componete cristiana”, dedicata al Santo martire decapitato, San Giovanni Battista.

June 10, 1940, from the balcony of Palazzo Venezia in Rome, seat of the Grand Council of Fascism, the Duce Benito Mussolini announces the Italian entry into the war on the side of Nazi Germany; Mussolini already now stands as a military goal to have an enemy to be defeated in order to start the so-called "parallel war" on Germany (Italy would fight so with the German allies, but pursuing autonomous and independent objectives); In fact, the Duce, he wanted to prove to Hitler (who took the decisions on the course of the war without first consult Him) that Italy had to be considered military, political and economic of equal importance to the German one, so in order to achieve that, he need an opponent militarily within his reach, this opponent seemed to be Greece as it was geographically close, seemed to have weak military, a political class unwilling to fight, but the reckless attack proved be a serious military mistake with heavy consequences. This is the scenary as a backdrop to a group of military Sicilians catapulted on the Greek front, young soldiers who immediately realize of the prevailing military disorganization, their life appears hanging by a thread ... but there is a Saint who can help them... they finance the construction of the float of St. Sebastian, patron saint of the town of Melia in the municipality of Mongiuffi Melia (Messina), maybe (the figure is not certain) the idea of the float is from corporal Cingari of Melia, so asking S.Sebastian for help and protection (S.Sebastian is the principal patron saint invoked against the plague .... . isn't the War a plague...?!); participants enter their names in a silver casket bearing cantilevered effigy of the Royal Army, if they will die will remain at least a trace of their earthly life. This particular float has the Saint Sebastian who seems to have the military salute, on the basis of float is written: "The Infantries of the first company and officials of the 3rd Regiment.Infantry. Piedmont Fighters in the year 1940 during the battle of Greek devotees offered" .
This is a short and long reports on the traditional festival that the village of Melia (Mongiuffi Melia - Messina) celebrates in honor of its Patron Saint San Sebastian, with thet float that was so ardently desired by those Sicilians soldiers in those bleak darkest hours in our history.
A curiosity, every year on the occasion of the procession are distributed to the population of loaves in the shape of arrows (to remember the 1st martyrdom of the Holy Bimartire), with the priest Di Bella who celebrated mass, while the loaves acquire the form " cuddura "(donut-shaped), for the procession for of San Leonardo, celebrated in the other hamlet of Mongiuffi, opposite Melia (both villages form the Sicilian municipality of Mongiuffi Melia).

il 10 giugno 1940, dal balcone di Palazzo Venezia in Roma, sede del Gran Consiglio del fascismo, il Duce Benito Mussolini annuncia agli Italiani l'ingresso in guerra dell'Italia a fianco della Germania nazista; già da subito Mussolini si pone come obiettivo militare quello di avere un nemico da sconfiggere per poter avviare la cosiddetta "guerra parallela" alla Germania (l'Italia avrebbe combattuto sì con gli alleati tedeschi, ma perseguendo obiettivi autonomi ed indipendenti); il Duce infatti, voleva dimostrare a Hitler (che prendeva le decisioni sull’andamento della guerra senza preventivamente consultarlo) che l'Italia doveva essere considerata potenza militare, politica ed economica di uguale importanza a quella tedesca, quindi per poter raggiungere tale scopo, aveva bisogno di un avversario militarmente alla sua portata, questo avversario sembrava essere la Grecia in quanto era geograficamente vicina, sembrava avere forze armate deboli, una classe politica poco disposta a battersi ed una popolazione poco interessata agli eventi nazionali, ma l'avventato attacco si rivelò essere un grave errore militare con pesanti conseguenze. Questo lo scenario che fa da sfondo ad un gruppo di militari Siciliani catapultati sul fronte Greco, giovani soldati i quali subito si rendono conto dell'imperante disorganizzazione militare, la loro vita appare appesa ad un filo...un Santo a cui votarsi forse c'è...si autotassano per finanziare la costruzione della vara di San Sebastiano, Santo Protettore della frazione di Melia del comune di Mongiuffi Melia (Messina), forse (il dato non è certo) l'idea della vara è del caporale Cingari originario di Melia, chiedendo così protezione ed aiuto a S.Sebastiano, Santo Protettore invocato contro la peste (esiste una peste meno grave della Guerra ?!); i partecipanti alla colletta inseriscono i loro nomi all'interno di una teca in argento recante a sbalzo l'effigie del Regio Esercito, se moriranno resterà almeno una traccia della loro vita terrena, in più collegata al Santo. Viene realizzata questa particolare vara col Santo che sembra eseguire il saluto militare, sulla base della vara è scritto " I FANTI DELLA 1a COMP. E UFFICIALI DEL 3° REGG.FANT. "PIEMONTE" COMBATTENTI NELL'ANNO 1940 AL FRONTE GRECO DEVOTI OFFRIRONO".
Questo è un breve e lungo report sulla festa tradizionale che il borgo di Melia compie in onore del suo Santo Patrono San Sebastiano, portando in processione quella vara che fu così ardentemente voluta da quei militari Siciliani in quelle ore tetre e buie della nostra recente storia.
Una curiosità, ogni anno in occasione della processione vengono distribuite alla popolazione delle pagnotte a forma di frecce (a ricordare il 1° martirio del Santo Bimartire), col sacerdote padre Di Bella che ha celebrato la messa, mentre i pani acquistano un'altra forma, detta a "cuddura" (a ciambella), per la processione in onore di San Leonardo, festeggiato nell'altra frazione di Mongiuffi, dirimpettaia di Melia (entrambi i borghi formano il comune siculo di Mongiuffi Melia).
