Afghanistan Engineer District-South marked its inactivation after four years of delivering critical infrastructure projects in Afghanistan with a ceremony held on Kandahar Airfield July 11.
Over the course of four years, the district’s technical experts completed nearly 200 projects valued at $1.4 billion that improved the safety, security and well-being of Afghans, US and Coalition Forces.
As more projects have been completed and Afghans are assuming the lead in operations and maintenance of critical infrastructure, the scale of operations has decreased. So too has the need for the South District. In its place now stands the smaller South Area Office of Transatlantic Afghanistan District, with a newly established headquarters in Kabul.

I think I can safely say there is no accounting for the random connections we make with other individuals in the family... it just happens that way, with no ill-intentions on anyone's behalf.
In this case, I just happened to be old enough to feel how being with this someone special resonated within me, and to walk away from her with the ability to remember our interactions, to this day even.
Despite not having the opportunity to see her after I was six years old, I somehow managed to write and call over the years with regularity. More often calling her, selfishly, just to hear her exclaim with her Jersey/Bronx accent "Oh! Hi ya dahling! How ya doin?!"
The time came when I called for her that Aunt Dee Dee had to tell me Grandma's health was rapidly declining. Dee told me that if I ever wanted to see her alive again, I should plan to come up soon. And so I did, it wasn't an easy trip to manage at the time, but I needed to see her one more time, if just to look into her eyes and hug her once more.
When I arrived in Pennsylvania, Aunt Dee gently prepared me for our visit with Grandma, explaining the effects of senility and how Grandma was no-longer able to recognize anyone. Dee didn't want me to be hurt by Grandma's not knowing who I was. Aunt Dee made a matter-of-fact statement about senility being god's way of protecting ourselves from the realities of our own old age that I really liked.
I was surprised to find that despite Grandma's lack of knowing or remembering anyone, she still had the ability to have a lively chat full of her witty commentary.
The first time she cracked me up in laughter, she stopped speaking, turned to look at me and said, "You sound just like my Michael-Ann!" I laughed with joy, and replied, "because I AM your Michael-Ann!" At which, we both erupted in laughter and hugged with delight, as she asked in my ear "How did you find me?" and all I could think to say was "I just kept looking until I did."
However, by the time we stopped hugging, she had already forgotten our brief reunion, and continued on chatting as if speaking to someone she had just met, catching me up on all the "gossip" from random memories she still had.
It was through our laughter that day, we had many momentary micro-reunions. I can't tell you how grateful I was for the gift of her fleeting ability to recognize me. At the end of our visit, leaving her was very difficult, I knew I would never see or speak with her again. Aunt Dee helped out by explaining how much Grandma loved to eat and that the announcement of mealtime would completely absorb her attention, giving us the opportunity to leave without her becoming concerned about where we were going or anxious about being left behind.
As Aunt Dee led Grandma in her wheelchair out to the lunchroom, they passed a large mirror and Grandma insisted Dee stop so she could have a look at herself in the mirror. Grandma smiled and bounced her bobbed white hair a few times with her hands, asking with interested approval "Oh! When did I get SO blonde?"
Evidence enough for me that Dee's belief regarding senility made good sense.
This is a photograph from the 4th Annual Multyfarnham (Multy) 5KM which was held in the village of Multyfarnham about 15KM west of Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 3rd June 2015 at 20:00. An incredible and unprecedented crowd of almost 300 participants took to the route including runners, joggers and walkers which was on an out-and-back course on beautiful country roads. The weather was perfect for racing and running. The fast course combined with the good weather conditions provided personal and seasonal bests for many of the participants. The GAA Club and Community Centre provided car-parking and the race headquarters. Overall this was a very well organised race event which on the evidence of tonight's race can grow even further in future years. As this and other photographs in this set shows there is nothing like an evening race in summer time in rural Ireland. Multyfarnham's setting amongst the rolling hills of north county Westmeath and not far from the shores of Lough Derravaragh provides a wonderful race setting. The village of Multy is easily accessible and is just two miles off the N4 Dublin Sligo road.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. My Flickr account will probably remain quiet for a while. I took this photo on the night of my 32nd birthday. This is the last self-portrait I took with my G9. Someone broke into my apartment today, nothing was damaged and very few things were stolen, but this camera was among them. The earrings I wear on this photo, a birthday present I got from friends last year, are also missing.
I thought I would be more upset than I am about losing this camera. Right now I'm more concerned about the idea of some stranger rummaging through my stuff. But it's strange to realize I don't have a camera any more - they took the old one, too. I had this G9 for a year and enjoyed it a lot. I wonder if you can ever replace a lost camera. Right now I'm not even sure if I want to.

Accounting sucks when u can't understand the teacher because his accent is so thick! He's obviously NOT American, which wouldn't be a problem... except that it's an online class and he admits that people have trouble understanding him because of it. There isn't any face to face, it's just a chat room with his voice.
