Fortifications - during the time of the United Provinces Hellevoetsluis was the naval port of the Admiralty of de Maze (Rotterdam) and could accommodate an entire fleet within a special land-enclosed fortress with harbour and dockyard facilities, accessible through a canal. Thanks to its strategic situation the town grew from the beginning of the 17th century to be the homeport for the Dutch war fleet. In later years the port was fortified more and more and Hellevoetsluis therefore became a unique combination of fortified town and naval port.

The Admirals Maarten Tromp, Michiel de Ruyter and Piet Heyn had their home base here and in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution William III of Orange's invasion fleet departed from the port.

Capture of Brielle

April 1st, 1572 - the capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen. A turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was poorly defended by the Spanish, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.

The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison led by the Spanish "Iron" Duke of Alva protagonists was poorly defended. On the evening of April 1 in 1572, the 600 men sacked the port, rammed the city gates, defeated the Spanish soldiers and liberated Brielle as the first Dutch city in the Netherlands from de Spanish .

Nowadays a very popular annual UNESCO event with lots of Watergeuzen, Spanish soldiers and medieval dressed people in a city center all dressed up just like then on that historical day.

Medieval and monumental facades abound. The inner city of the city is rich in historic streets and facades, this also makes it a popular location for recording films.

Sarlat-la-Caneda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.

Motorcycle across the Kleine Geul.

.

At a surprisingly beautiful smal private terrace, a vintage-dressed motorcyclist is standing next to a motorcycle on the footbridge. He inflates the tires that are visibly deflated, but everyone knows he may never leave. It is unclear whether this is art, it has been there for many years. A little further on there is also art, a statue of a naked lady who looks relaxed over the river Kleine Geul. Privately owned and it is unknown who the artist is.

La Roque St. Christophe reconstructed.

Photo: Richard Poppelaars © #AboutPixels #Photography (Nikon D90) / #replica #model - #RoqueSaintChristophe #abri / #Architecture at #LaRoqueStChristophe #RoqueSaintChristophe in #PeyzacleMoustier, #Dordogne - #France

A nice model how La Roque St. Christophe looked like at a unknown time before expulsion of all inhabitants and the complete destruction of the structures and the fortifications by the Catholic French King Henry III. Like always, it's hard to find his reason to order this. Maybe because it's somewhere under a catholic carpet among many other religious events..

Note: this model was very dusty, faded colors and a low light location. It would be nice to see a much better presentation.

Roque Saint Christophe - La Roque Saint-Christophe (one of the 147 exceptional prehistoric UNESCO sites since 1979) is a large limestone rock with rock dwellings (abris sous-roche in French) along the river Vézère near Peyzac-le-Moustier in the Dordogne region. The cliff is one kilometer long and towers over the road below and the river Vézère at about a hundred meters. The rock has five terraces that were created on the one hand by the erosion of the river water 60 million years ago and on the other hand by the action of frost on the limestone during the ice ages of the Quaternary era.

The earliest dating is the Moustérien period, the caves, dating from the Middle Paleolithic era, were first inhabited as a shelter in the Neolithic period. There are traces that people already lived here 55,000 years ago and a skeleton of a Neanderthal of about 40,000 years old has been discovered. People also lived there in the Iron Age, remains such as tools and an engraving of a Madonna from the Gallo-Roman era from the first century AD. In 976 it became a fortress to protect against the Normans. During the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) the fortress served as a fortress against the English. In the sixteenth century, the city and the fortress were occupied by the Protestant Huguenots. Finally in 1588, the Catholic French King Henry III ordered expulsion and the complete destruction of the structures and the fortifications.

Nowadays, reconstructions show what life must have been like in the fortress, such as the medieval construction site, forge, drum winch (a kind of winch), quarry, armory and a kitchen from the year 1000 of the fortress.

Delftware tiles with Sea Beggars. they were at the start of the Dutch Uprising at Sea acting as pirates or freebooters and also made the coastal villages unsafe.

Delftware or Delft pottery, also known as Delft Blue[1] (Dutch: Delfts blauw), is a general term now used for Dutch tin-glazed earthenware, a form of faience. Most of it is blue and white pottery, and the city of Delft in the Netherlands was the major centre of production.
