Timeless village facades. Wandering in the silent small streets of Limeuil surrounded by only old, medieval even older houses. It's a steap walk up-hill that leads to an excellent panorama to enjoy the surrounding landscape and rivers. It's like the village didn't change at all, the many traces in architecture show a long history back in time.

Limeuil - Architecture

The village of Limeuil, located at the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère rivers historically both commercially and strategically on the highways of trade. This region was primarily a wine-producing area for subsequent delivery downstream to Bordeaux, on large, flat-bottomed "gabarres". Nowadays a very nice historical village and on the list of the "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France", the most beautiful villages of France.

Capture of Brielle

April 1st, 1572 - the capture of Brielle by the Watergeuzen. A turning point in the uprising of the Low Countries against Spain in the Eighty Years' War. Militarily the success was minor as the port of Brielle was poorly defended by the Spanish, but it provided the first foothold on land for the rebels at a time when the rebellion was all but crushed, and it offered the sign for a new revolt throughout the Netherlands which led to the formation of the Dutch Republic.

The Watergeuzen were led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff. After they were expelled from England by Elizabeth I, they needed a place to shelter their 25 ships. As they sailed towards Brielle, they were surprised to find out that the Spanish garrison led by the Spanish "Iron" Duke of Alva protagonists was poorly defended. On the evening of April 1 in 1572, the 600 men sacked the port, rammed the city gates, defeated the Spanish soldiers and liberated Brielle as the first Dutch city in the Netherlands from de Spanish .

Nowadays a very popular annual UNESCO event with lots of Watergeuzen, Spanish soldiers and medieval dressed people in a city center all dressed up just like then on that historical day.

A nice model how La Roque St. Christophe looked like at a unknown time before expulsion of all inhabitants and the complete destruction of the structures and the fortifications by the Catholic French King Henry III. Like always, it's hard to find his reason to order this. Maybe because it's somewhere under a catholic carpet among many other religious events..

Note: this model was very dusty, faded colors and a low light location. It would be nice to see a much better presentation.

Photo August 2013, La Roque Saint-Christophe (Abri) (Settlements, Neolithic period 55000BP- destruction 1588) after 57013 years in time.

---

Roque Saint Christophe - La Roque Saint-Christophe (one of the 147 exceptional prehistoric UNESCO sites since 1979) is a large limestone rock with rock dwellings (abris sous-roche in French) along the river Vézère near Peyzac-le-Moustier in the Dordogne region. The cliff is one kilometer long and towers over the road below and the river Vézère at about a hundred meters. The rock has five terraces that were created on the one hand by the erosion of the river water 60 million years ago and on the other hand by the action of frost on the limestone during the ice ages of the Quaternary era.

The earliest dating is the Moustérien period, the caves, dating from the Middle Paleolithic era, were first inhabited as a shelter in the Neolithic period. There are traces that people already lived here 55,000 years ago and a skeleton of a Neanderthal of about 40,000 years old has been discovered. People also lived there in the Iron Age, remains such as tools and an engraving of a Madonna from the Gallo-Roman era from the first century AD. In 976 it became a fortress to protect against the Normans. During the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) the fortress served as a fortress against the English. In the sixteenth century, the city and the fortress were occupied by the Protestant Huguenots. Finally in 1588, the Catholic French King Henry III ordered expulsion and the complete destruction of the structures and the fortifications.

Nowadays, reconstructions show what life must have been like in the fortress, such as the medieval construction site, forge, drum winch (a kind of winch), quarry, armory and a kitchen from the year 1000 of the fortress.

Delftware or Delft pottery, also known as Delft Blue[1] (Dutch: Delfts blauw), is a general term now used for Dutch tin-glazed earthenware, a form of faience. Most of it is blue and white pottery, and the city of Delft in the Netherlands was the major centre of production.

Sarlat-la-Caneda - One of the most prominent villages in the Dordogne region is Sarlat-la-Canéda. A very popular destination in the Périgord Noir, maybe because modern history has largely passed it by. Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The old centre consists of impeccably restored stone buildings, with 77 protected monuments it's on France's tentative list for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Largely car-free with lots of narrow ancient streets and small stores, an absolute pleasure to walk through and to discover.

Snow! Enjoy the snow at Anton Pieck.

Anton Pieck's gnome who normally says "Paper here!" calls now seems to be panicking that there is snow. Now that is a special experience in the Efteling, but the Netherlands itself is indeed in turmoil when there is exactly (only) such a thin layer of snow.

The relaxing life of Lemurs.

I's very nice to watch the large lemur population in the park. Many lemur species are represented, including the ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), the red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra), the crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus), and the red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer). These lemurs roam freely about the park, and occasionally interact with visitors.

This includes species like cheetahs, lions, Servals, wild cats, leopards, Caracals, white lions, black panthers, a Katanga lion, jaguars, Ocelots, margays, Geoffroy's cats, Oncillas, pumas and bobcats. The jaguarundis which are very rare in European zoos. Most recent addition are black footed cats.

In addition to the felids, there is a large lemur population in the park. Many lemur species are represented, including the ring-tailed lemur, the red ruffed lemur, the crowned lemur and the red-bellied lemur. The sculpture "De Glazen Engel" by Rotterdam artist Herman Lamers stands on the Grote Markt in the center of Zwolle, directly opposite the Grote or St. Michael's Church. The sculpture depicts the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city of Zwolle.

This imposing sculpture, 3.5 meters tall, is constructed from approximately 325 to 350 thick panels of green-tinted glass glued together. Due to the layering and transparency, the angel's appearance constantly changes with the light.

The sculpture was unveiled in 2010 and serves as a contemporary counterpart to the bronze statue of the Archangel Michael that stands on the roof of St. Michael's Church.

The counterform (the mold) of this glass sculpture, made from the remaining parts of the glass panels, has stood at the main entrance of Isala Hospital in Zwolle since 2013..
