Cebu was ook al vóór de Spaanse tijd een belangrijk handelscentrum voor Chinezen en andere Oost-Aziatische kooplieden. Met name in Cebu-city zijn nog diverse historische gebouwen, die herinneren aan het koloniale Spaanse tijdperk. Prachtig grotendeels bewaard gebleven is het fort San Pedro, niet ver van het geroezemoes van de drukke haven. Het is een mooie, rustige plaats, waar vervlogen tijden nog tastbaar aanwezig zijn.
Een bezoek aan de Basilica Minore del Santo Niño mag u niet overslaan. In het hartje van de oude stad staat deze prachtige, historische kerk, die het kostbare, met edelstenen ingezette, beeld van het kind Jezus, Santo Niño, herbergt. In 1565 werd dit kostbare beeld, ooit aan koningin Juana van Cebu geschonken, later door de Spanjaard Legazpi onbeschadigd aangetroffen tijdens de bouw van de kerk. Replica’s van het beeld tref je overal aan in de Filippijnen: in huizen, op jeepneys en tricycles. Degenen die daarin speciaal geïnteresseerd zijn, kunnen bezoeken aan andere historische gebouwen brengen, onder andere een mooi klooster.
Tijdens het Sinulog, oftewel het fiesta señor, het grootste feest van Cebu op de derde zondag in januari, ziet een optocht van bont uitgedoste mensen dansend op de ritmische geluiden van trommels, en processies rond de Santo Niño.
Westelijk van hier gaat u naar de bonte Carbon Market, waar allerlei levensmiddelen en handgemaakte produkten, ook uit buurlanden, te koop zijn.
Een kleine groep Taoïsten heeft een mooie tempel gebouwd, hooggelegen met een prachtig uitzicht op Cebu-city en omgeving. Een bezoekje zeker waard.
Via Mandaue, een aangrenzende stad, gaat u over de brug naar Mactan Island. Lapu Lapu City, is de hoofdplaats van dit kale en vlakke koraaleiland. Een klein monument herinnert aan Lapu Lapu, een nationale held die Magalhães doodde.
In Maribago aan de oostkust van Mactan worden op traditionele wijze gitaren, mandolines en ukeleles gemaakt. Aan de overkant ligt Olango, een eiland dat, als het aan het Asian Wetland Bureau ligt, spoedig een natuurreservaat voor trekvogels en mangroven wordt. Helaas is het binnenland wat vervuild.
Aan Punta Enguano, het meest noordoostelijke punt van Mactan, ligt de Magalhães-baai, waar in 1521 de historische strijd plaatsvond. Voor beide helden heeft men monumenten opgericht.
De natuur op Cebu heeft veel terrein verloren, en is op sommige punten zelfs geheel verloren gegaan. In de badplaats Moalboal kunnen onderwatersporters alleen nog terecht bij het verderop gelegen eiland Pescador. Bij de kust van Cebu heeft een typhoon in 1984 het rif letterlijk opengereten. Maar aan het Panagsamastrand van Moalboal kun je nog steeds een duikcursus volgen.
Een paar kilometer verder naar het zuiden is het luxe park bij Badian een bezoek de moeite waard. Mensen die niet gaan duiken kunnen eens een uitstapje maken naar Matutinao. Na een korte wandeling kunt u genieten van prachtige watervallen en de laatste stukjes regenwoud op Cebu.

Located in the wealthy residential suburb of Beverly Hills about 6 km north of downtown Cebu is an enormous Taoist Temple. It was built by Cebu's substantial Chinese community (the Chinese make up about 15% of Cebu's population).
The temple is the a center of worship for Taoism, the religion which follows the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tze. You can see Taoist devotees following their rituals on Wednesdays and Sundays, as they climb the 99 steps of the temple to light joss sticks and have their fortunes read by the monks.
Built in 1972, the Taoist Temple is constructed in a highly ornate and, some would say, gaudy style of Chinese architecture, and is topped with a pagoda-style roof.
The temple has an elevation of 300 meters above sea level, and if you climb the 99 steps to the entrance, you will be rewarded with a good view of Cebu City and in the distance Mactan and Bohol islands. Nice sunset views too.
Wikipedia: The pied myna or Asian pied starling (Gracupica contra) is a species (or possibly a species complex) of starling found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They are usually found in small groups mainly on the plains and low foothills. They are often seen within cities and villages although they are not as bold as the common myna.
The topography of Kalinga province is rugged and sloping with mountain peaks ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 meters in height. The province’s geographic feature on the western portion is characterized by sharp crested interlinking peaks of steep slopes, isolated flatlands, plateaus and valleys. The eastern portion is generally rolling and gradually sloping foothills.
The province is drained mainly by the Chico River with headwater originating from Mt. Province and empties into the Cagayan River.The Chico River has several tributaries: Bunog River in Tinglayan in the south, the Tanudan and Biga Rivers in the east, Pasil River in the middle, Mabaca and Saltan Rivers in the north. Several small lakes can also be found in Kalinga. These water resources if to be tapped could provide abundant sources for power generation, fishing, irrigation and for domestic use, but would destroy rice terraces, villages, livelihoods, and complete indigenous cultures.
The province enjoys an average temperature ranging from 17 to 22 degrees Celsius and Type 3 weather patterns. The dry season extends from November to April. The rest of the year is considered rainy. The heaviest rains usually occur in the months of July to October.
Large portion of the lower regions of the province are open grassland suitable for pasture, but the highlands have extensive areas of tropical rainforest and at higher elevation in the west, pine. Rizal and Tabuk with their flatlands are the biggest rice producers. Next in rice production are the mountainous areas – the rice terraces of Balbalan, Lubuagan, Pasil, Pinukpuk, Tinglayan, and Tanudan.
Als die US-amerikanischen Streitkräfte nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die Philippinen nach und nach verließen, gaben sie ihre, nun überflüssigen, Militär-Jeeps an die einheimische Bevölkerung ab. Diese bauten die Jeeps mittels Eisenbahnschienen so um, dass mit den so entstandenen Jeepneys mehr Passagiere transportiert werden konnten.
Zusätzlich erhielten die Jeepneys ein Metalldach, um so für Schatten zu sorgen. Gleichzeitig wurden sie häufig kunstvoll bemalt und verziert (vor allem religiöse Motive) und mit glänzenden Kühlerhauben und Radkästen aus Chrom versehen.
Als preisgünstiges Verkehrsmittel erfreuten sich die Jeepneys wachsender Beliebtheit, um damit das Fehlen eines öffentlichen Personen-Nahverkehrs auszugleichen, der nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs nicht existierte. Um dem ungebremsten Wachstum während der letzten Jahrzehnte einen Riegel vorzuschieben, beschloss die Regierung die Zulassung der Fahrzeuge zu beschränken. Unter anderem müssen die Fahrer eine besondere Führerscheinklasse "Professional Driver's License" besitzen, eine reguläre Strecke abfahren und angemessene Fahrpreise erheben. Des Weiteren müssen die Besitzer an einem bestimmten Wochentag, der an der Farbe der Kennzeichen ersichtlich ist, ihre Vehikel in einer dafür vorgesehenen Garage parken.

* Gelbes Kennzeichen (Busse, Jeepneys, Vans, Motorräder, Tricycles): Zugelassen für Personenbeförderung, häufig als Sammeltaxi im Einsatz
Die heutigen Jeepneys werden professionell in philippinischen Werken hergestellt. Die Verzierungen werden heute u. a. durch Comicmotive ergänzt. Das bekannteste dieser Werke ist Double AA. Sie wurde 1998 gegründet und ist in Besitz von Aristo Hernandez.

This skylight in the Dumaguete Cathedral gives a green glow to the altar area. I was impressed by it's kaleidoscope-like shape.
The Dumaguete Cathedral is the oldest stone church in Negros. It was originally built in 1754, reconstructed in 1885 and extended in 1936. Since then, many modern touches have already been incorporated into the cathedral's interior and exterior. Despite the changes, the cathedral still remains a beautiful sight to behold.
