"Somewhere between the bottom of the climb and the summit is the answer to the mystery why we climb."
-- Greg Child
When planning our trip to Sri Lanka I'd read lots of reviews on hiking Adams Peak for sunrise and what an incredible experience it can be. I say can be as the chance of the weather being unfavourable is actually quite high - many people reporting that they could barley see in front of them due to cloud cover let alone endless views from the peak.
I had penciled it in to our itinerary as a must and thus I was willing to do anything to make it happen. In order to make it for Sunrise CJ and I had to leave our place in Mirissa at approximately 10pm and settled in for the 4-5 hour car ride (special mention to our Hosts for driving us!) to the base. I still remember vividly looking out our drivers window whilst falling in and out of sleep at around 2am in the morning and seeing this amazing sight in the distance. I wasn't sure if I was more excited that we were finally there or nervous about the fact we had to ascend it in a race against the light (in which we ended up doing with quite some time up our hands).
Adams Peak has huge significance in Sri Lanka, with the mountain being referred to by a number of names across a variety of religions. For example Buddhists believe that the foot shaped mark at the top was that off the Buddha, where as Christians believe that it is the foot print of Adam when first setting foot on Earth after being cast out of paradise.
Regardless, it was an unforgettable experience and one I would encourage for all who plan on traveling to Sri Lanka! I wont lie when I say it was tough - something like 5500 steps (big steps, not your average household ones!) and extremely cold at the top. So if you're planning this hike ensure you have warm gear, something we overlooked coming from the coast.
As you can see from the stars in this shot we were lucky in that mother nature was playing nice... stay tuned for a few from the top for sunrise and hopefully it'll help explain why this cant be missed!
Cheers

Saint Peter in Chains Cathedral
Saint Peter in Chains Cathedral is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati. It is a Greek revival structure located at 8th and Plum Streets in downtown Cincinnati. Saint Peter in Chains was begun with the laying of its cornerstone on 20 May 1841, under the direction of then-bishop (later archbishop) John Baptist Purcell, and formally dedicated on 2 November 1845. Its striking single spire, which soars to two-hundred and twenty feet above street level, was the tallest man-made structure in the city for many decades, and is constructed of pure white limestone.
Lafcadio Hearn climbs the steeple
One day three alert steeplejacks suggested to the editor that he send a reporter along that afternoon when they climbed the tower of Saint Peter's Cathedral. They were going up to remove some temporary decorations from the cross, and from that height, they told him, a most striking view of the entire city could be obtained. Henderson saw the possibility of a good story, although not the one they suggested, and he gave the assignment to Lafcadio Hearn.
Climbing out the window, he ascended sickeningly swaying grappling ladders, feeling all the while as though the tower were reeling, and was hauled up to the cross with a block-and-tackle. The steeplejacks persuaded him to sit on an arm of the cross itself, strapped to it, and as his head cleared, he gazed about in all directions. Above the smoke and evening mists the sky seemed very near; and sounds came up from the city like echoes from another world.
But his ethereal sensations were suddenly interrupted when one of the climbers grasped the stone cross and rocked it back and forth, shaking him violently on his perch.
'Stop! he shouted in terror. 'For God's sake, stop!
'It's perfectly safe, 1 the steeplejack assured him, grinning happily. 'I shook it just to show you how safe it is!"
