St Mary's is the parish church of the town of Kidderminster and a grand affair it is too, still mostly an early 16th century building of impressive proportions, its extraordinary length in particular. The tower is a major landmark on the northern edge of the town centre, though sadly the construction of the modern ring-road effectively cuts the church off completely from the rest of the town and it can only be reached via a rather uninviting subway beneath the dual-carriageway, thus it doesn't get the footfall it deserves.
The church is usually approached from the south and it is this aspect that makes the biggest impression, most noticeably for its handsome south-west tower and the richly glazed clerestories of the nave (which appears to be composed more of glass than wall), all fine examples of the late medieval Perpendicular style. The length of the building is remarkable as beyond the nave is not only a decent sized chancel but a further chapel to the east as well (an early 16th century chantry chapel, formerly detached but now more integrated and in use as a parish room). There has however been much restoration owing to the fragility of the grey and red sandstones used in the construction, and thus much of the external stonework was renewed in the Victorian period (when the south chapel and vestries connecting to the chantry chapel were added). On the north side of the chancel is a handsome memorial chapel added in the early decades of the 20th century.
Entry is via the porch in the base of the tower at the south-west corner, where the visitor is greeted by a vast interior space whose lighting is somewhat subdued (especially the chancel). the nave is a classic example of the Perpendicular style and of considerable width, culminating above in the bright clerestories and a flat wooden ceiling. There is much of interest to discover here, particularly the monuments which date from the 15th-17th centuries and include several fine tombs, the earliest being a graceful canopied tomb to a noblewoman in the south aisle and a large brass on the north side. The chancel has three more large tombs with recumbent effiges to members of the Cokesey and Blount families, the latter being of post-Reformation date.
Every window of the church is filled with stained glass, mostly of the Victorian period but much of it rather good. The most handsome window is the early 20th century window by Powell's over the main entrance and there is more glass by the same studio in the nave aisles whilst the nave clerestorey has an attractive sequence of angels holding symbols of the Benedicite by Hardmans' installed at the very end of the 19th century. My first encounter with this church was in the late 1990s when working as part of the team that releaded the entire scheme of windows in the nave clerestorey, thus I got to know these angels very well. Sadly however the glass throughout this church suffers from a disfiguring layer of varnish or shellac (applied as 'blackout' at the beginning of World War II and a substance known as 'speltek' according to someone I spoke to at the church). This was smeared over most windows with a rag (the impressions of which were apparent when we worked on the clerestorey windows) and is not easily removed, but small areas where it has detached show how much brightness has been lost while the windows suffocate under this darkening layer. I hope some day the right solvent can be found to remove this stuff with minimal risk to the glass.
Kidderminster's grand parish church rewards a visit and deserves more visitors than it currently receives. It isn't always open but in recent years prior to the pandemic was generally open for a few hours on most days during the summer months (though best to check times before planning a trip). Don't be put off by the seemingly impenetrable barrier of the ringroad, St Mary's is worth seeking out and the nice people who steward their church would I'm sure like to be able to welcome more people to this fine building.

D'ascendance guadeloupéenne, Laura Georges débute le football en 1997, à l'âge de 12 ans au club du Paris Saint-Germain. Depuis son enfance, elle s’entraînait avec son père, grand passionné de football et son frère, dans le parc du Château de Versailles. Après des études au collège Pierre de Nolhac à Versailles, elle rejoint la faculté Léonard de Vinci avant de partir pour les États-Unis à Boston. À l'intersaison 2007, elle rentre en France et rejoint l'Olympique lyonnais, tout en poursuivant son cursus étudiant en effectuant un Master Marketing, Communication et Stratégies commerciales à l'INSEEC Lyon.
Passée en 2013 au PSG après six ans à Lyon, elle déclare regretter le manque d'assiduité personnelle du président Nasser Al-Khelaïfi auprès de la section féminine, ce qui a eu des conséquences positives au niveau de la section féminine.
En effet, depuis, les filles ont été en stage au Qatar pour la première fois depuis la présidence qatari du club et ont même pu jouer une rencontre de Ligue des Champions contre Glasgow City au Parc des Princes, antre des hommes du club.
Laura est une joueuse de caractère et de poigne sur le terrain, se donnant toujours à 200% et c'est la raison pour laquelle, elle est surnommée "LE ROC".
Elle est reconnue par les supporters comme une joueuse sympathique, généreuse, donnant toujours de son temps. Elle est également reconnue pour son franc-parler et notamment pour défendre, la pratique de son sport et le manque d'implication de certains médias quand il s'agit de parler du football dit féminin.
Le 14 mai 2015, malgré une blessure, elle a participé à la finale de la Ligue des Champions, avec son club du Paris St Germain. Mais le club perd la finale de dernière minute contre Francfort (2-1).
Elle effectue sa première apparition en équipe de France le 26 septembre 2001 face aux Pays-Bas. Au 30 juin 2011, elle compte 120 sélections et 3 buts en équipe nationale. Elle a participé aux Coupes du monde 2003 (à 19 ans) et 2011 ainsi qu'aux Championnats d'Europe 2005 et 2009.
Elle participe en 2015, au Canada, à sa 3e coupe du monde. Elle forme avec Wendie Renard la charnière centrale de l'équipe de France durant toute la compétition qui se termine le soir du 26 juin 2015, en quart de finale face à l'Allemagne (1-1, t.a.b : 6-5).
À ce jour, elle est la joueuse (en activité) la plus capée de l'Equipe de France féminine avec plus de 164 sélections (décembre 2014).

En point d'orgue de leur stage de préparation en Bretagne, les joueuses de Patrice Lair se sont imposées en amical contre l'US Saint-Malo (0-2).
Veronica Boquete ne met pas longtemps avant de briller sous ses nouvelles couleurs et ouvrent le score d'entrée de jeu, sur un corner qui trouve le fond des filets directement (0-1, 2e).
Arrivée elle aussi cette été, Irene Paredes double la marque en seconde période sur penalty (0-2, 49e). Une belle entrée en matière pour les Parisiennes, avec en prime l'entrée en jeu de quelques jeunes qui sont parvenues à se mettre en évidence dans une partie maîtrisée par les Rouge et Bleu.

Le match ne pouvait pas plus mal commencer pour les Malouines. Dès le premier corner, Véronica Boquete, nouvelle recrue parisenne arrivée tout droit du Bayern Munich, inscrivait un premier but sur un corner direct (2').
Un but sur lequel la jeune gardienne Simon ne pouvait rien faire. Comble de malheur, les Malouines perdaient aussi, peu de temps après, Daunas, blessée au genou (14'). Malgré tout, l'équipe de Saint-Malo, bien organisée en défense autour de Février et Anger, donnait le change aux visiteuses. Ni Palacin, bien lancée par Boquete (27'), ni Sarr sur une belle remise de Katoto (30'), ne trouvaient la faille. Simon veillait.
Malgré une dernière action pour le PSG, par Boquete (41'), le score ne bougeait pas jusqu'à la pause. Le PSG doublait la mise juste après la mi-temps, suite à une main de Février dans la surface, avec un penalty transformé par Irène Paredes, elle aussi nouvelle recrue qui arrive de Bilbao (48', 2-0).
Les nombreux spectateurs présents se demandaient à quelle sauce les Diablesses allaient être mangées. Il n'en sera rien. Comme en première période, la jeune Simon dans les buts locaux était attentive. Avant la rencontre, Fabrice Garin avait indiqué vouloir proposer une belle opposition au PSG. C'est chose faite !
Fabrice Garin (entraîneur de Saint-Malo) : « Je pense que nous les avons tout de même gênés dans leur animation offensive. Nous voulions travailler la défense. Nous l'avons fait et bien fait. Nous aurions bien aimé pointer notre nez devant leur but, mais c'était trop difficile. »
Patrice Lair (entraîneur du PSG) : « Sur l'investissement de la semaine, avec le stage à Ploufragan et sur le match, je suis content. Nous avons des jeunes qui ont des possibilités, et d'autres qui doivent passer un cap. Nous avons bien tenu le ballon, mais nous avons manqué de percussion. »

While taking the trail out of the dark hollow and up to the ridgeline, this very natural looking stairway presented itself. It really was quite dark in the deep hollows, and you really did feel you were emerging into the light.
