"Somewhere between the bottom of the climb and the summit is the answer to the mystery why we climb." ~Greg Child

My husband and I just completed our first summit of Mt. Rainier! It is 14,410ft and is the highest glaciated peak in the lower 48 states. It was one of the most grueling, and rewarding, days of my life. This mountain tests your physical and mental limits, but it rewards you with life changing experiences and mystic beauty. It was hard to multi-task between climber and photographer for 15+ hours, but I'm glad I took the extra effort now!

It's very rare for me to very be interested in a #trailfail. I quite honestly just don't understand people that get excited whenever a heritage unit or rare engine comes to an area that is trailing 2nd or 3rd, yet will still want updates & will chase. I just see way better things to get excited for or for much better ways to spend my free time.

However, there are the (very) rare instances where the rule meets its exception. CSX S988 in July of 2022 was one of them. S988 was the delivery run of two brand new Brightline trainsets on their to Florida from the Siemens factory in California. Green 2 & Pink 2, the names the trainsets have been dubbed, were built in anticipation for Brightline's expansion to Orlando which will open later this year.

Having never seen one of the trainsets in person, the chance to document them in territory they'll never be seen in again & with a few friends along for the ride that wanted to see them to, we had ourselves a plan for the afternoon. Here, we see them climbing Raccoon Mountain as they head for Wauhatchie. 7-17-22

We started early but a couple other parties passed us on the way up. I guess that is okay since they appeared young enough to be our grandchildren. The hike to Avalanche Peak is only a 5 miles round trip with 2,150 elevation gain up to 10,568 feet. Since I struggled with altitude adjustment problems for the first few days of our visit, I was very happy to be hiking this trail without issues even if younger people flew past us. There is one young man seated on the left side of the peak and a young couple in the process of ascending. All three passed us on the trail. While I enjoyed our time alone on the trail going up, since this is grizzly bear habitat I didn't mind it when we met more noisy people on the descent.

FIsheye trees. LARGEST view is best with this one.

Just over an hour after sunrise and the light was getting a bit harsh as the morning mist was starting to burn off.

I've grown quite fond of this mountain. I only "discovered it" last October but in the past 12 months i've had 4 walks over the seasons and i've never seen any crowds.

Novus Ascending sim, very cool place with very cool avatars like this one!

Saw these hot air balloons last night on the way home, and the clouds were looking promising so I rushed to get into this position for a quick shot of the airships sailing into a beautiful sunset.

The ridge from Bogatinska vratca (saddle) is quite steep, so in winter the normal ascent route goes over the W slopes. (dia scan)

There's always a music for a train.... This is an old one. Its title in Portuguese means "The descending train" :)

This is on the E ridge. On the very right is Katchberg road pass area, in the first mountain streak in the middle, there's the summit of Kareck. On the horizon behind are Niedere Tauern.
