Taking a break with a nice view of Shuksan

© Lauren Miller 2006

A painting by my Great Aunt Laura van Pappelandam. It was painted in my Great Grandfather's Studio in Keokuk, Iowa sometime between 1938 and 1940.

The house Joan Eardley, the artist, first rented in the fishing-village of Catterline on the north-east coast of Scotland. Here she lived in fairly spartan conditions from 1954, before moving to other houses in the village, when No.1 was condemned as 'unfit for habitation'.

However, this is the cottage which features directly in many of her paintings, or is the vantage-point from which she painted her landscapes. She eventually purchased it - for £35 - shortly before her tragically early death in 1963.

Bored with figurative art, New York denied Lucien Freud an exhibition at first. This image shows a wire artist upon which a label can be hung, and a flat, mdf model. The carved inscription on the tree reads 'NY loves LF'. Freud's profile appears left of the wire artist's face.

David Vaughan - Artist - 1998

Ashton-under-Lyne Central Art Gallery - 1998.

David Vaughan (1944 - 2003) was a psychedelic artist who formed the design team Binder, Edwards & Vaughan (BEV) and the father of actress Sadie Frost. He obtained commissions for his psychedelic painted furniture from HRH Princess Margaret, did work for the Beatles in the early 1960s and David Bailey used his work for a series of posters. He was also in charge of London's Roundhouse, where he booked Jimi Hendrix for his first British gig for the grand sum of £50.

Vaughan was born in Manchester. He rejected the "London scene" and moved back to Manchester, where he became the country's most prolific mural artist, during the 70's & early 80's.

He then spent three years as a down and out, suffering from Manic Depression, which he suffered from for the rest of his life.

I like the book, but wish if they use paintings not released on artists' blogs yet :-/

There were quite a few artists in this area sketching the old buildings. This one was sat in front of the superb facade of the old Wholesale Fish Market, Northern Quarter, Manchester, 17.7.24.

Took this shot for my shop, awkardly holding my phone and crystals in both hands while kneeling down on the ground over a white paper, this is the result...
