It's hot this week in the UK, so precautions must be taken. In my case that means hauling myself and the dog out of the house before 7:00am so we can enjoy the shade of the woods for a couple of hours. Oh, but don't you waste any time looking for him in this picture because he has mystical powers, disappearing in the blink of an eye and only reappearing upon the smell of a chicken bite out of my pocket...

A southern hawker and common darter in the air together (a combo of course). Amazing how size doesn't matter in these clashes and the smaller darter is quite capable of starting a fight.

The castle is situated on the Laich of Moray, a fertile plain that was once the swampy foreshore of Spynie Loch. This was originally a more defensive position than it appears today, long after the loch was drained.

The motte is a huge man-made mound, with steep sides and a wide ditch separating it from the bailey. The whole site is enclosed by a water-filled ditch, which is more a mark of its boundary than it is a serious defensive measure.

Duffus Castle was built by a Flemish man named Freskin, who came to Scotland in the first half of the 1100s. After an uprising by the ‘men of Moray’ against David I in 1130, the king sent Freskin north as a representative of royal authority.

He was given the estate of Duffus, and here he built an earthwork-and-timber castle. Freskin’s son William adopted the title of ‘de Moravia’ – of Moray. By 1200, the family had become the most influential noble family in northern Scotland, giving rise to the earls of Sutherland and Clan Murray.

In about 1270, the castle passed to Sir Reginald Cheyne the Elder, Lord of Inverugie. He probably built the square stone keep on top of the motte, and the curtain wall encircling the bailey. In 1305, the invading King Edward I of England gave him a grant of 200 oaks from the royal forests of Darnaway and Longmorn, which were probably used for the castle’s floors and roofs.

A recent outing on a beautiful frosty morning - one of the few with some good light! I was on my way back to the car with brain in neutral and had to do a double-take walking past this scene just a few yards from the car park. The light moved very quickly and soon was no longer backlighting the tree so I had time to set up and take just one shot only. Moe mornings like this please!

Many thanks to everyone who comments or faves my shots.

If you can you should. Don't keep me waiting. I've been trying to get a shot like this for 4 years. Now I want another. Like the man said, children and animals...

Or Cow Parsley as it's more commonly known in the UK.

I had recently lent my retired EOS4000D* to a young family member for some college work (fashion and portrait photography) and finding that she got on so well with it I wondered how it would feel again in my hands. And here's the result. This camera is little fiddly for me, harder now to achieve focus exactly where I want it in the way I'm used to and the EF75-300 lens isn't stabilised....but Canon sell gazillions of these every year and they're not at all bad. And as the saying goes, it ain't the camera it's the guy pressing the button, right...?

(* This would be known in North America as the Rebel T100.)

Some star constellations on the Colgada lagoon waters, in the Ruidera Lagoons Natural Park. This is another spring composition from the series that I struggled to achieve there last Saturday, playing with the reflections of the sun and the sparkling and shining starry reflections it gave on the water.

A return to yesterday’s lake and on this occasion we see the happy couple.

This little group had found a cosy nook in which to grow. I think they are common inkcaps. In Epping Forest. Thank you Joan Disley for the correct identification.

Another spontaneous "collage" of traditional architectural elements and textures in the old town of Hellín (Albacete, Spain).

I found an interesting play of contrasts here, as the window illuminates with natural light inside, while the street lamp, provides artificial lighting outside

So I had to watch the nuclear sunrise develop whilst driving to Rannoch Moor on Saturday, but it was fine as I arrived and watch the delicate colours kissing the Black Mount mountains (?) and then the mist and fog rolled in for a couple of hours.

So quiet in the woods - the warm weather is keeping the wildlife in open ground I think.

A Winter’s Veil

Meanwhile the real Border Terrier in my life has been across the fields in the ice and fog, charging about like it’s Spring. This afternoon we will fight for the sofa and the tv temote…

Spent a very wet week in Scotland and was very lucky to met this chap via another photographer Ian Mason.

Making the most of a misty morning I wish I was able to make more of. Still the dogs enjoyed the walk a grandchild awaits.

Hovering over the dunes at Holme nature reserve in Norfolk - one of my favourites. Just for once I approached from the right direction to see the head.

If there’s fish in here we’ll find them. (There weren’t…)

But never mind. It’s the thrill of the chase.

This, as it turns out is our favourite photo of Freddie. Apart from him just being him, as a composition I’m really pleased with the effect of the empty space around him. So, how do I top this…?

While watching the distant cormorants at a large nesting site this bird flew out of the group and came to the tree directly above me to gather nesting material - couldn't believe my luck.

Millions of years of history are revealed at the breathtaking Grand Canyon

A spectacular Highland castle located in beautiful wooded grounds overlooking Plockton harbour, one of Scotland’s prettiest coastal villages. A great location to explore Plockton and the Isle of Skye from, with the mountain pass to Applecross less than an hour away. At low tide seals sit on the rocks below the castle, otters are frequent visitors to the foreshore and red squirrels inhabit the woods on the Castle drive.

As you can see from this coloured version it was a bright sunlit day. One of the things I like about converting to black and white (as in the next image Abandoned 2) is that it makes it possible to give the sky a threatening appearance. If I increased the blue in this colour image.. it would simply look more 'sunshiny'.. by increasing the blue in black and white mode... I think it gives the scene an extra touch of drama. Or indeed drama where there was previously none!
