We picked four varieties of apples today:
Macoun -- developed in 1923, one of my favorites, but susceptible to a variety of diseases. It does not bear consistently.
Northern Spy -- New York native circa 1800, late-season, all-purpose heirloom variety that stores well
Roxbury Russet -- most likely the oldest variety of apple developed in the United States. Dates back the mid-1600's in Roxbury, Massachusetts. All-purpose apple that stores well.
Mutsu -- introduced in 1948, also known as a Crispin. Good for eating and baking.
The red apples came from Paradise Farm in Lyndeborough; the yellow apples are from McLeod Bros Orchard in Milford.
