I'm always ambivalent about Autumn. I like what it's about: apples, trees changing colors, Thanksgiving (my favorite holiday ever). At the same time, it's the harbinger of coldness, less daylight, and cloudiness (especially in Seattle).

Anyway, this photo that I took at the Capitol Hill Farmer's Market in Seattle really reminds me of Autumn, which is both good and bad.

Noch eine Spielerei im Lichtzelt

Strobist information:

The two apples were shot separately and combined in PhotoShop. The crystal apple was lit with dark field lighting by soft box behind it. The organic apple was lit by two softboxes, one on either side. The left side light was the key and was brighter to create surface highlights and texture.

The tree in the garden is full of them. Yum :)

Tighter crop of the apple blossom in late afternoon light.

These are Ambrosia apples. I've been buying them from our local Farmers' Market for the past five years or so, and they have quickly become my favourite apple. Some years, the fragrance from them is so floral that the whole grocery bag seems to get infused. They are sweet and crisp with low acidity and an aromatic flavour reminiscent of pear. According to Wikipedia, the strain was first cultivated by the Mennell family of Similkameen Valley, British Columbia, who discovered the apple growing in their orchard.

Here's how I like to enjoy my Ambrosias: I slice one apple into neat wedges and fan them out nicely on a pretty plate. Then I cut a proper hunk of aged cheddar cheese, preferably five-year old (but three-year old will do in a pinch). A handful of fresh walnuts and a spot of sun to sit in are the finishing touches to my afternoon snack. I love the combination of sweet, salty, savory, and mildy nutty.

Closeup of apple

So like so many people of my age i was hit with a revelation of this apple I found a week ago. AaI grabbed it thinking how nice it looked, and how I could use it to incorporate into pictures. Red has always been my favorite color, and how apples where always my favorite fruit. Having eaten so many in my past from fresh off the tree, to candy and carmel apples. Never thinking about why or how really. But as I was taking a whiz. I started recalling my very very young childhood. There was this guy who's wife had died that lived just like across a curbless street two houses up small hill. His name was Jack and he rented the upper part of his house to another Jack that was younger and skinnier, and looked like Wolfman jack. Anyways the older jack drove what i believe now to be a 63 impala. He died in a strange car accident in like 74. But he loved the few neighbor kids. Treated us often with tales. Always had full size Hersheys in his refrigerator crisper, along with some apples which he ate often with a jack knife. He supplied would supply us all with soda and apples. Never seen him not have a bussel in a bussel basket next to his frig. The house had no basement because of how it set on property. So his floors were concrete. Kept things neat, and very sociable with the neighbors. Like santa he knew the trouble makers. But yeah, Looking back Apples bring me happy feelings, and I just today at almost 54 believe it was jack who made me love apples. Even the story of Johnny Apple Seed is pretty cool to me. So like milk growing up apples where a staple in my life.

Yeah, I probably need to get out more.

The house Cori and I moved into came with a 40+ foot apple tree, and it's loaded... and dropping. We are are keeping much to feed the local horses, but also prepping for making apple sauce, pies, whatever.

I definitely went with minimalistic, as food photography is quite difficult.

WIT: I set an apple on a cutting board and shot using natural light from a window on frame right.

I used two textures, one from flickr user pareeerica and one from flickr user skeletalmess
