An interesting new style of route display appears to be on trial on First Manchester 40407. It has to be said that the piece of paper on this Wright Crusader bodied Dennis Dart SLF is easier to see that some electronic displays. It is pictured here arriving at Oldham's West Street bus station before a trip to Holts Estate.

Inside the Painter Bro's site at Hereford with a load of steel section finds one of the narrow gauge locos used on the short section of 2 ft gauge railway. They had 2 locos at the time, both 4w DM. One built by R & A Lister, Works No 40407 of 1954, the other by Lister Blackstone, Works No 54181 of 1964. Which one of those is in this photo I don't know. 15th April 1985

The First ( see what I did there! ;o) ) Wright Crusader Dennis Dart was 6501, a dealer stock vehicle that was snapped up by the newly FirstBus bought Greater Manchester Buses North Limited. 6501, now 40407, is seen here under going work in OM depot.

This Dart is due to be withdrawn this week, with them now becoming aged and surplus to requirements. Here it is waiting to start the first 428 journey out of Oldham to Buckstones and Shaw.

In 1997 these Dennis Dart SLF batch were purchased as Dealer Stock for the First Manchester takeover. As far as I know they are the first batch of Wright Crusader bodied Dennis Dart ever built, making their interior layout somewhat unique on the type up until P523LND, 40429. Wrightbus were proud of the product, as it was marketed and sold at a substantial higher amount than most designs of body found on the Dennis Dart SLF chassis. It was the premium Dart, as I've always described it, and has got to be my most favourite type of bus in existence. I suppose that could just be to do with my age though, and the fact that I grew up on these buses.

The batch were numbered 6501 to 6530 under local numbering, and 40407 to 40436, totalling to 30. They worked always from Depots outside of the M60, including Wigan, Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Pioneer (late Pennine), however often found themselves in the centre of the ring road due to routes towards Manchester - Even in late life!

A fantastic batch of buses, I bid them a warm farewell.
