Day 30 of 365.

Vonnie and Sofia are running their own summer camp for girls called "Homegrown Girls Maker Camp".

In the morning, the girls put on safety glasses and get going with tools to build a project. By the end of the week, each girl will have built their own Little Free Library.

In the afternoon, they go on a field trip.

All hail girls with power tools.

I have to say as "enlightened" as someone like myself tries to be, I am prone to as many irrational securities as anyone else. This challenge has really been tough on my self image from a couple of perspectives. First of all, I have never been comfortable with my appearance and seeing all the other people's posts - every one of each is more attractive than me - well - it's not fun. I understand (well, sorta understand) the point of a self portrait is not to produce model-like pictures, but to show the inner self. Still, I guess I can be as superficial as anyone sometimes.

Secondly, I don't think this mode of photography is my forte - which I suppose is quite the point of undertaking a challenge like this - to improve and spark creativity. I also feel petty as my self portraits have not seemed to capture much interest. On the same token, maybe I just don't work hard enough at them to deserve much attention.I tend to take the pictures I feel I am "good" at and not try others - a behavior that becomes a vicious cycle. In my rational moments I understand the point of these challenges is to push oneself out of one's comfort zone to spur creativity and growth.

So today's pic - which I kinda like - is meant to remind myself to undergo this challenge, like any other activity, with mindfulness - to observe these thoughts and let them go - and to embrace myself.

So tonight, I met up with Phyllis in Park Slope for an evening of debauchery. The most debaucherous thing we did was debate how we could cookie-nap those Girl Scout cookies on the table behind us. (spoiler alert - when the boxes were abandoned, we found out they were empty. boo).

We started off the evening at Union Hall, which was pretty neat. It has a cool vibe, and the bar area looks like a fancy library. It was pretty hipster. Non-hipster aspect: no PBR. Hipster flocking point: two bocce courts in the back. There was nothing I wanted to do more than go back there and show those douches who's the queen of the bocce court. I play to win, bitches. (I once got a bocce ball set for my birthday when I was younger. its a typical gift when you had a grandfather who played it every single day)

Afterwards, we headed into Lower Manhattan. The aim was "find a coffee place and have some coffee and a snackie." They were all closed. Except for this Vietnamese place called Saigon Shack. They had noodles, pho, bahn mi, and coffee. Totally hit the spot and a perfect way to end the night.

Yet another photo from the scavenger hunt list. There's 100 items to try and photograph in January, so it'll help me fill the days this month. I may have to find another challenge for next month. Today I decided to attempt interpreting Something I do first thing in the morning. The very first thing I do every morning is drink a glass of water. I have to bring one to bed with me, and it sits on the nightstand waiting patiently for the morning to arrive to fulfill its destiny.
