Dogwood blossoms on a sunny day.

Day 365 of 365.

A year ago, I captioned a close-up photo of a melon with "1/365".

My friend, Eugene (eekim), who inspired me with his own 365 project, replied: "Is this what I think it is?"

And thus began on June 27, 2015, my 365 project.

******

In the beginning, the rule was simple. "Take a picture a day for 365 days." In reality, I took far more than one photo per day, but I posted the one photo that I felt was worthy of sharing.

Quickly, though, the rule became: "Share something beautiful." and I started describing the backstory to the photo. I loved meeting this man (15/365) who devoted his life to collecting rocks. Or Bruce Lee's barber (73/365) who works around the corner from me. Or this little girl (197/365) who goes to the dog park because she loves animals.

The story often became as important as the picture. Sometimes, even more important.

And then, the project evolved into: "Share something authentic."

I realized that the 365 inadvertently became a wonderful journal. My year of living photographically.

Many of the pictures reference or remind me of important--some life changing--events that have happened this year.

2/365 was taken in Yosemite at a celebration of Ignatius and John's wedding. (Today is their anniversary by the way.) 20/365 was the day we met Sulu. 29/365 was taken after my aunt had surgery. 85/365 was taken after Jake Brewer suddenly and tragically passed away in a bike accident. 108/365 is about my mother's stroke. Sadly, 351/365 is about the shootings in Orlando.

That was my challenge to me: Share something authentic. Be vulnerable. Tell stories in image and words.

I have loved looking for the moments to share with you. Sometimes, the perfect picture comes quickly. Other times, I take a bunch and have to look and look again at the photoroll. The photo of the day always showed up.

That's the other thing--at one level it feels like a big deal that I've finished this and yet taking a picture a day is not hard. What's hard is the discipline of doing it every day even on the days when you don't want to or when the rest of your life overwhelms. It's like running a marathon, anyone can run a mile. You just have to repeat it 26.2 times.

I'll end by thanking Vonnie, Quincy, and Ruby. They've been just as much a part of this project as me. They've let me take pictures of them. They've indulged me when I say "Wait, wait, I just want to take one more." They've left me alone after dinner when I'm processing photos.

I've also been surprised and grateful at the reception the photos have received.

And if there is a thing I would ask of you it is this:

Find your own way to make Art every day. Share something authentic.

You need it. Your community needs it. The world needs it.

With love and appreciation,

Eugene

PS: In the (slightly edited) words of Dory the forgetful blue tang, "Just keep clicking."

This was an idea that I had for a few years. So, I saved all of my delivery boxes, then finally built it. This photo was taken a while back, however I hadn’t posted it yet because I was mentally preparing myself for starting this project again, lol.

I'm struggling, why won't you help me fix this?

Habra que seguir practicando...

mi ritirerei in campagna come ho fatto io.“ ✨🙏❤️

Enjoyed brief moments of sunshine today, but the cooler weather still has me feeling a little cranky. This fella doesn't seem too happy about the cool temps either as he was trying to find a sunny spot to hang out, without much luck.
