Telč is a town in southern Moravia, near Jihlava, in the Czech Republic. The town was founded in the 13th century as a royal water fort on the crossroads of busy merchant routes between Bohemia, Moravia and Austria.

 

Besides the monumental 17th century Renaissance chateau with an English-style park (a rebuilding of original Gothic castle), the most significant sight is the town square, a unique complex of long urban plaza with well-conserved Renaissance and Baroque houses with high gables and arcades; since 1992 all of this has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Before it's time for all the decorations to be taken down I thought I would post this shot of the Lion and Lamb yard, Farnham. You can't see from this view but the lion is sitting with a lamb - that's what it's looking down at.

It's sometimes no surprise that so many ancient civilizations considered the Sun to be a god - especially in early Springtime, as nature begins to wake up from Winter's sleep.

There are other good brands, I know, but the E-400 has served me well for 7 yeard, so of course it had to be Olympus again.

La Push, Olympic Peninsula, Washington

 

A US Coast Guard ship stationed at La Push heads for the open ocean, navigating down the mouth of the Quillayute River, flanked by an artificial breakwater on one side and James Island on the other.

Nice to see something other than pinstripe suits in London! Crocuses are blooming everywhere, and I particularly liked these pinstripe beauties!

This little hamlet is the town where I was born. In it's day it was vibrant and thriving. Today, however, it's more of a ghost town. It's strange how the memory of better days can mask the reality of the deterioration that has occurred over time.

Gisteren zocht ik nieuwe brillen uit bij de opticien.

Wat een getob, alleen brildragers weten waar ik het over heb. Die bril bepaald voor een groot deel mijn gezicht.

Dit oude brilletje dook ik op naar aanleiding van de zoektocht van Peter Moorman, Peter weet precies wat hij wil, en zoekt een bril met ronde glazen. Het witte brilletje op de foto's is 30 jaar oud maar weinig gedragen. Ik kreeg steeds te horen dat ik eruit zag als mijn eigen grootmoeder, dat was slecht voor mijn zelfvertrouwen.

Yesterday I was looking for new glasses at the optician.

Very worrying, only people who wear glasses know what I'm talking about. Those glasses will determine my for a long time.

The old glasses in the photo I found back, because I was following the quest by Peter Moorman, Peter knows exactly what he wants, he was looking for round glasses.

The white glasses on the photos are 30 years old but little worn. I kept getting told that I looked like my own grandmother, that was too bad for my self esteem.

The ceratiomyxa fruticulosa are common slime molds and to findalmost during the whole year. This one is barely 1 mm large. The macro lens was on 5x and the pic is a 50% from the original.

Buachaille Etive Mor - By Moonlight

  

After making the early morning climb up Beinn A'Chrulaiste, I looked for a suitable location that looked down on to Buachaille Etive Mor. After catching my breathe I started to set up my gear, this was the first image I made of the morning catching the scene by moonlight.

Pāhoehoe (on the left) is basaltic lava that has a smooth, billowy, undulating, or ropy surface. These surface features are due to the movement of very fluid lava under a congealing surface crust.

 

ʻAʻā (on the right) is basaltic lava characterized by a rough or rubbly surface composed of broken lava blocks called clinker. The clinkery surface actually covers a massive dense core, which is the most active part of the flow. As pasty lava in the core travels downslope, the clinkers are carried along at the surface.

 

The Hawaiian words were introduced as technical terms in geology by Clarence Dutton, who was head of the division of volcanic geology at the United States Geological Survey in the 1880's.

 

I can confirm from personal experience that it is quite easy to walk on pāhoehoe, but the loose, broken, and sharp, spiny surface of an ʻaʻā flow makes hiking difficult, slow and very hard on both feet and shoes.

The picture was taken in a full moon night in March 2015. I was there from one to four o' clock in the morning. It was cold, but it was a great feelin' to have a full moon night at the river.

We'd taken a 'break' from looking for strangers and stopped at an infamous Brick Lane pub for a quiet drink when I spotted Olivia walking along with a group of friends. She carried off her look with such style and grace that I was unable to not react. I passed my wine glass to someone (Iian I think) and went straight into my pitch. Olivia was happy to play along and a mural just next to the pub was the perfect colour tone for her.

I've really struggled to choose a picture to post here because I have more than a few keepers. I also did 4 different edits of this one and love them all equally. Definitely one of my favourite shots of the day.

I enlisted a friend of hers, who I've since discovered is called Toby, to hold the reflector for us. I bossed him around quite mercilessly and dubbed him 'Reflector Man' which raised some mirth. I don't know why it is that I get really bossy when I have a camera in hand because I'm not normally that way inclined. Definitely something for the psych couch one of these days!

Oxburgh Hall is a moated country house in Oxborough, Norfolk, England, today in the hands of the National Trust. Built around 1482 by Sir Edmund Bedingfeld, Oxburgh has always been a family home, not a fortress. The manor of Oxborough came to the Bedingfeld family by marriage before 1446, and the house has been continuously inhabited by them since their construction of it in 1482, the date of Edward Bedingfeld's licence to crenellate. A fine example of a late medieval, inward-facing great house, Oxburgh stands within a square moat about 75 metres on each side, and was originally enclosed; the hall range facing the gatehouse was pulled down in 1772 for Sir Richard Bedingfeld, providing a more open U-shaped house, with the open end of the U facing south. The entrance, reached by a three-arched bridge on the north side, is dramatised by a grand fortified gatehouse, evoking the owner's power and prestige, though as fortification its value is largely symbolic; it is flanked by tall polygonal towers rising in seven tiers, with symmetrical wings extending either side that reveal nothing on the exterior of their differing internal arrangements. About 1835 the open end of the U was filled in with a picturesque, by no means archaeologically correct range that recreated the central courtyard. Other Victorian additions include the Flemish-style stepped gables, the massive southeast tower, the oriel windows overhanging the moat (illustration, left) and terracotta chimneys. Four towers were added to the walled kitchen garden. The hall is well known for its priest hole. Due to the Catholic faith of the Bedingfeld family, a Catholic priest may have had to hide within the small disguised room in the event of a raid. The room is reached via a trapdoor, which when closed blends in with the tiled floor. Unlike many similar priest holes, the one at Oxburgh is open to visitors. The hall is also notable for the Oxburgh Hangings, needlework hangings by Mary, Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick. Mary worked on these while imprisoned in England, in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury. The estate has a number of woodland walks, including a 'Woodland Explorer' trail. Oxburgh Hall is a popular location for film and television series, including brief appearances in the Dad's Army episode "Museum Piece", and later in You Rang, M'Lord?. It was the major setting for the 1994 television dramatisation of Love on a Branch Line, a novel by John Hadfield. It is a Grade I listed building, the highest-level designation.

The Golden Twin-spot or Tomato Looper is a moth of the family Noctuidae. It is found from southern Europe, the Levant and tropical Africa, but can be found in great parts of Europe because it is a migratory species. The length of the forewings is 15–18 mm.

 

This example is one of 8 bred from eggs laid my a female found in Devon, England. The eggs hatched on 1 December 2015, they pupated on 16 January 2016, and emerged on 1 February 2016.
