Griffon vultures have been used as model organisms for the study of soaring and thermoregulation. The energy costs of level flight tend to be high, prompting alternatives to flapping in larger birds. Vultures in particular utilize more efficient flying methods such as soaring. Compared to other birds, which elevate their metabolic rate to upwards of 16 times their basal metabolic rate in flight, soaring griffon vultures expend about 1.43 times their basal metabolic rate in flight. Griffon vultures are also efficient flyers in their ability to return to a resting heart rate after flight within ten minutes.

As large scavengers, griffon vultures have not been observed to seek shelter for thermoregulation. Vultures use their bald heads as a means to thermoregulate in both extreme cold and hot temperatures. Changes in posture can increase bare skin exposure from 7% to 32%. This change allows for the more than doubling of convective heat loss in still air. Griffon vultures have also been found to tolerate increased body temperatures as a response to high ambient temperatures. By allowing their internal body temperature to change independently of their metabolic rate, griffon vultures minimize their loss of water and energy in thermoregulating. One study in particular (Bahat 1995) found that these adaptations have allowed the Griffon vulture to have one of the widest thermal neutral zones of any bird.

It declined markedly throughout the 19th–20th centuries in much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, mainly due to direct persecution and "bycatch" from the poisoned carcasses set for livestock predators (Snow and Perrins 1998, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). In some areas a reduction in available food supplies, arising from changes in livestock management practices, also had an impact (Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). It is very highly vulnerable to the effects of potential wind energy development (Strix 2012) and electrocution has been identified as a threat (Global Raptors Information Network 2015). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for veterinary purposes pose a threat to this species. One case of suspected poisoning caused by flunixin, an NSAID, was recorded in this species in 2012 in Spain (Zorrilla et al. 2015). Diclofenac, a similar NSAID, has caused severe declines in Gyps vulture species across Asia.

I felt this was an appropriate image to share on this glorious, sun-filled Sunday. What a creation these eagles are with their combination of strength and beauty...as if they were hand painted by HIS hands. God, thank you for the American Bald Eagle.

While getting ready for my trip to Austria in order to get some more cool landscape pictures from the Alps I decided to precess dome action shots I did last time there while trying to get on the Snowboard and taking shots of my friends. I do like the result :-) So this is Johannes. The post processing was done with Photoshop CC + Lightroom 5 and the pictures where taken with my Sony.

This 1928 Chinese restaurant was a Portland icon for years. Even though it closed down in 2015 they decided to leave the sign up. Probably because the name has a humorous double meaning and, over the years, everyone just had to take a selfie with it. Yep! People were taking selfies with the sign back before it was called a "selfie".

I posted a 2011 version I took of the sign in the comments below. This version is now one of the pictures used on the restaurants Wikipedia page.

Well, it was inevitable: with no new shooting for me and travel still seemingly far off, I took a dive into my archives. I went back on old trips and found images I'd never shown before or which I processed in a significantly different way. I hope you enjoy this trip back through the last few years.

This is Western Brook Pond in Newfoundland. "Pond" makes it sound like a placid, peaceful place, but it's is, in fact, a wonderfully dramatic fjord, with steep mountains on either side, carved out by glaciers. Now cut off from the sea (hence the name 'pond'), most people view it, as I did, by boat after a lovely, gentle 3 kilometer walk from the road (and seaside). This image was taken near the end of the lake and the small waterfall you can see is the delightfully-named Pissing Mare Falls.

From the archives: Newfoundland, 2015.

If you'd like to see more of my images from this part of the world, take a look at my Newfoundland album or my Maritimes album.

Himeji Castle is a hilltop Japanese castle complex located in Himeji, in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.

The castle is regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture, comprising a network of 83 buildings with advanced defensive systems from the feudal period. The castle is frequently known as Hakuro-jō ("White Egret Castle") or Shirasagi-jō ("White Heron Castle") because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a bird taking flight.

Himeji Castle dates to 1333, when Akamatsu Norimura built a fort on top of Himeyama hill. The fort was dismantled and rebuilt as Himeyama Castle in 1346, and then remodeled into Himeji Castle two centuries later. Himeji Castle was then significantly remodeled in 1581 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who added a three-story castle keep. In 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu awarded the castle to Ikeda Terumasa for his help in the Battle of Sekigahara, and Ikeda completely rebuilt the castle from 1601 to 1609, expanding it into a large castle complex.

Several buildings were later added to the castle complex by Honda Tadamasa from 1617 to 1618. For over 400 years, Himeji Castle has remained intact, even throughout the extensive bombing of Himeji in World War II, and natural disasters such as the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake.

Himeji Castle is the largest and most visited castle in Japan, and it was registered in 1993 as one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country. The area within the middle moat of the castle complex is a designated Special Historic Site and five structures of the castle are also designated National Treasures. Along with Matsumoto Castle and Kumamoto Castle, Himeji Castle is considered one of Japan's three premier castles. In order to preserve the castle buildings, it underwent restoration work for several years and reopened to the public on March 27, 2015. The works also removed decades of dirt and grime, restoring the formerly gray roof to its original brilliant white color.

The Cambus O' May bridge spans the River Dee to the east of Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was paid for by the estate of Alexander Gordon, who had grown up nearby. The bridge was built in 1905 and is a suspension footbridge 164 feet (50 m) long and 4 feet (1.2 m) wide. The bridge was rebuilt in 1988 for safety reasons but was badly damaged in the December 2015 Storm Frank. It was repaired and reopened in April 2021.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Rijnhaven, Dredging, Boskalis, Strandway (slightly cut from B &T)

It doesn't seem to get more industrial than this, the Boskalis trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Strandway (Shipkits Groningen and Stocznia, Poland (2014)) in the Rijnhaven in front of the 'Cordico' flour plant. It’s there for the redevelopment of the Rijnhaven. Worldwide there aren't a lot of these dredgers, an they move all over the world. The Strandway for instance, was used for the dredging of the New Suez canal.

Some background about this old harbour basin. It was created in 1895 to offer shelter for Rhine vessels (rijnaken), when they could not operate due to the freezing of the rivers during the winter. After the creation of the Rijnhaven (Rhine harbour), the transit freight traffic to Rotterdam continued to increase and it was made suitable for large sea-going vessels by deepening it. As planned, the Rijnhaven became an important port for the transhipment of bulk goods 'on stream' - the sea-going vessels were moored on buoys, separate from the quay and their cargo was moved directly to rhine ships. In de 70/80s of the last century, the Rijnhaven lost its transhipment function and was brought back to its old function. In 2015, the rhine ship berths were moved to, among others, the Maashaven. Enabling the redevelopment of the old harbor of which 30% will be filled up. The rest of the harbor will be turned into a floating park: here.

In the BG is the former Co-Op factory , then Latenstein’s meelfabriek (flour factory) and now Codrico. Architect: J.J.M. Vegter / engineering: A. Aronsohn. It consists of a silo building and a mill building on the quay. In the building, all parts of the manufacturing process have been given their own building proper part with their own construction and their own architectural expression. There’s, by the way, a nice urban legend about the structure on top of the silo: Rumour had it that urbanist Riek Bakker (who designed the Kop van Zuid) lived there for a while to get the right sense of place of the area ;-)

The somewhat silly ".7xEF20-213mm f/4.5" in the camera/lens description, flags the use of the Viltrox 'Canon to Lumix' mount adaptor / speedbooster in combination with the good old Tamron AF 28-300 LD ASP 285D.

This is number 262 of Urban frontiers.

and 5 of the new Rijnhaven, the redevelopment album.

While the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most popular photo spots in all of Northern California... one of the most interesting things about it is the number of places, ways and locations it can be photographed from and all that happens behind the bridge.

One of the last times I shot there, I was on Slacker Hill... at one point I noticed how cars would be driving up and down Conzelman Rd... trying to find an ideal viewing spot for the sunrise that was moments from happening. Just trying to capture a bit of that early morning excitement and movement with this capture of two cars head/tail lights passing each other on the way up and the way down.

Praia da Marinha (in English: Navy Beach) is, according to Michelin Guide, one of the most emblematic and beautiful beaches of Portugal, located on the Atlantic coast in Caramujeira, Lagoa Municipality, Algarve, and also considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe. In 1998, it was also awarded with the distinguished "Golden Beach" award by the Portuguese Ministry of the Environment because of its outstanding natural qualities. Furthermore, many pictures of this beach have often been used in promotional material and "Guides of Portugal" distributed around the world.

This beach is not only famous for its beautiful cliffs, but also for the high quality of the water. Marinha Beach has often been used by international advertising agencies and by television producers in advertising campaigns.

In 2015, the Marinha Beach was officially classified as one of the best destinations in Europe by the European Best Destinations / EDEN European Destinations of Excellence.

Happy Valentine's Day, dear friends! I haven't made a Valentine's Day card post in a few years, so it was time for another. 'The Heart Tree' - original photo taken in The Badlands - Porcupine, South Dakota on September 17, 2015.

I took very few photos during my single day in Reykjavik thanks to the appalling weather, and even less I'll upload to flickr. Hopefully this shot encapsulates a bit of the Icelandic capital in a recognisable way.

Haven't gone out shooting in a while. Me and the fiance took a trip to Bay Ridge to grab a sunset shot. What I would like to do for 2015 is to take more photos. I think that would be every photographers resolution. It's kind of cliche to say that, but I feel that 2014 was a low for me regarding output of work and picture taking. Although my fiance did pick up a camera and start shooting so now I'll enjoy it with her.

The stone seven-headed four-patronal church in the style of Russian patterns of the mid-17th century, built according to the design of the architect N. B. Vasnetsov. The construction site was consecrated in 1998. The foundation stone was consecrated on October 4, 2008. March 14, 2010 the lower temple of the Icon of the Mother of God the Inexhaustible Chalice is consecrated. Jan 6 2015 consecrated the upper church of the icon of the Mother of God Fading Color with the chapels of Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles (left) and Alexy, Metropolitan of Moscow, (right). The construction of additional chapels is also planned in the lower church, the construction of a water-sanctuary chapel and other buildings.

(140/365) Muckross House was built in 1843 by architect William Burn for Henry Herbert. Not long after its construction the Herbert’s were obliged to extensively improve the house and gardens in preparation for the visit of Queen Victoria in 1861. Unfortunately all this extra expense caused the Herbert’s great financial difficulty and consequently the house was put up for sale.

The castle was purchased by Lord and Lady Ardilaun; of the Guinness brewing family and it is they who added the ‘themed’ parts of the garden. The next owners were the family of Senator Arthur Rose Vincent, they were also keen gardeners and on the death of Maud; senator Vincent’s wife, in 1932 the land was donated to the state and now makes up much of the Killarney National park in her memory.
