....from a late afternoon walk through Oxley Creek Common - the wrens are like flies at the moment - there's a lot. Oxley Creek Common is home to a remarkable variety of birds. An experienced observer can find as many as 70 species in one hour of observation during the spring about 10% of all Australia's bird species and several times the diversity one could find walking the suburbs. In the past eleven years over 190 species have been recorded on the Common. (Source: University of Queensland)

Superb Fairy-wren

Scientific Name: Malurus cyaneus

Description: Adult male Superb Fairy-wrens are among the most brightly coloured of the species, especially during the breeding season. They have rich blue and black plumage above and on the throat. The belly is grey-white and the bill is black. Females and young birds are mostly brown above with a dull red-orange area around the eye and a brown bill. Females have a pale greenish gloss, absent in young birds, on the otherwise brown tail. The legs are brown in both sexes. Males from further inland and in the south-west of the range have more blue on the back and underparts.

Similar species: Several other species of fairy-wren are found in Australia. The males of each species are quite distinct, but the females and young birds are often difficult to separate. Of the species that overlap in range with the Superb Fairy-wren, the female White-winged Fairy-wren Malurus leucopterus and Red-backed Fairy-wren M. melanocephalus lacks the chestnut colour around the eye, while the female Variegated Fairy-wren M. lamberti has a dull grey-blue wash. Both the Superb and White-winged Fairy-wrens are similar in size. The Variegated Fairy-wren is slightly larger in size and has a longer tail.

Distribution: Superb Fairy-wrens are found south of the Tropic of Capricorn through eastern Australia and Tasmania to the south-eastern corner of South Australia.

Habitat: Seen in most habitat types where suitable dense cover and low shrubs occur. They are common in urban parks and gardens, and can be seen in small social groups. These groups normally consist of one dominant male and several females and young birds.

Feeding: Superb Fairy-wrens feed on insects and other small arthropods. These are caught mostly on the ground, but may also be taken from low bushes. Feeding takes place in small social groups.

Breeding: The nest is a dome-shaped structure of grasses and other fine material. It is usually placed in a low bush and is constructed by the female. The female incubates the eggs alone, but both sexes feed the young. Other members of the group will also help with the feeding of the young.

Male Superb Fairy-wrens have been labelled as 'the least faithful birds in the world'. Females may be courted by up to 13 males in half an hour, and 76% of young are sired by males from outside the social group.

Calls: The Superb Fairy-wren gives a series of high pitched trills, which are given by both sexes. The male often extends these trills into song.

Minimum Size: 13cm

Maximum Size: 14cm

Average size: 14cm

Average weight: 10g

Clutch Size: Three to four.

For the Macro Mondays challenge "Stone Rhyming Zone" (November 20th 2017)

HMM!

A real fun challenge this week! "You can choose any English word that rhymes with STONE and take a macro of it." There are so many possibilities! It proved hard to choose. Finally I decided to go very simple and settled on 'lone' or 'alone' and to shoot a single something! And it was a tiny 15mm marble that won the day - lonely in the sunshine.

The Old Jewish Cemetery (Czech: Starý židovský hřbitov, German: Alter Jüdischer Friedhof) lies in the Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague in the Czech Republic. It was in use from the early 15th century (the oldest preserved tombstone, the one of Avigdor Kara, dates back to 1439) until 1787. Its ancestor was a cemetery called "The Jewish Garden", which was found in archaeological excavations under the Vladislavova street, New Town.

The numbers of grave stones and numbers of people buried there are uncertain, because there are layers of tombs. However, it has been estimated that there are approximately 12,000 tombstones presently visible, and there may be as many as 100,000 burials in all. The most notable personalities buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery are Yehuda ben Bezalel known as the Maharal Rabbi Löw (d. 1609), Kli YakarShlomo Ephraim of Luntchitz (d. 1609), Mordechai Maisel (d. 1601), David Gans (d. 1613) and David Oppenheim(d. 1736).

Many thanks to everyone who will pass by visiting my shots. Comments are appreciated. You are welcome. Sergio

From Norsk Luftfartsmuseum in Bodø, Norway.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force received 108 Freedom Fighters: 16 RF-5A, 78 F-5A and 14 F-5B. The first 64 were received as military aid. They were used by six squadrons, the first and last being 336 Squadron receiving the first aircraft in February 1966 (formal handing-over ceremony a month later), and deactivating in August 2000. Three aircraft were kept flying until 2007, serving with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for tests in the "Eye of the Tiger" program, supporting development of the Norwegian Penguin anti-ship missile.

The aircraft received under military aid were handed off to Greece and Turkey. Of the aircraft bought by the Norwegian government, nine were used in exchange with U.S. authorities for submarines of the Kobben class.

In October 2011 five F-5A single seaters were given to aircraft maintenance schools around the country; including the Skedsmo, Sola, Bodø, and Bardufoss high schools, and the Royal Norwegian Air Force's training center at Kristiansand Airport, Kjevik. The aircraft were disassembled at Moss Airport, Rygge, before delivery to the schools. Of the ten remaining Norwegian F-5s, eight F-5B two-seaters were still for sale as of 2011, six of which were stored in Norway and two in the United States. The two aircraft in the United States had been approved for sale to the American businessman Ross Perot Jr., in 2008, but the deal was blocked by the U.S. government initially.

However, in 2015, Perot Jr. got permission and subsequently bought the aircraft for significantly below market price, which caused controversy and public criticism of the government of Norway.

Three survivors are exhibited at the Norwegian Armed Forces Aircraft Collection, two at Norsk Luftfartsmuseum in Bodø and one at Flyhistorisk Museum, Sola, near Stavanger.

Monsoon

Bodnath (Nepal) - Monsoon rain in Bodnath. This ancient city has become one of the districts of Katmandu. It is one of the main shrines for Buddhism in Nepal, due to the presence of many Tibetan refugees. It is estimated that this community brings together more than 10,000 souls in this district.

The 2015 earthquake did not spare the stupa (1), considered one of the largest in the world. He had lost his mind.

It was dismantled and rebuilt in a year. Religious buildings are always rebuilt faster than houses.

But this Buddhist monument erected in the 14th century, is not in its first reconstruction if we are to believe the ancient texts.

The photo of the couple and their child, sitting on the old stupa, waiting for the rain to pass, was taken in 2009.

for the Macro Mondays challenge "Ready for the day" (May 21st 2018)

.... well I thought I was 'ready' and posted my shot only to have it rejected!

What I took as suggestions (…take a picture of a product or tool you use to look and smell fresh, fruity and beautiful again for the new day) turned out to be the only interpertation of "Ready for the day" that was acceptable.

I have taken a shot of a jar of face cream that meets all your requirements so that it cannot be rejected on technical grounds. But I want the group pool to know my feelings. By rejecting my original image you have deprived me of a voice. I want to be heard!

Hans Holt commented to me "it should have been clear that this is all about grooming aids and products..." NO it is not at all clear. And there was no chance to ask, as the topic was locked! It is not how I 'get ready for the day' .... but every day (weekend, holiday or week day) I do first of all have my herb tea! See the previous shot for the original rejected image.

Like most people who post regularly to MM I take time to think and plan my wekly entry to the group. I take several shots, and often of several possible ideas. That is time and effort that I expend, in good faith.

Sorry MM police patrol .... I am NOT ready for this day!

In an interesting turn of events CN borrowed this GP7u from the LouisDreyfus grain elevator in order to switch customers who had cars waiting in Dawson Creek yard. This little PF train really grew close to my heart as it debuted in a summer camp back in 2015 and has been a regular amusement to visitors of our events ever since.

I can only assume, but I'm sure it ran a few kilometers during its time.

I tought it's worth uploading a photo of since I'm rebuilding it now to something completely different, putting this design to a well deserved rest for good.

Yes, this is a frozen and unstable bridge which we had to cross to reach the goal: the summit of Island Peak.

While we were crossing it with a firm and quick step, we noticed as crunched beneath us. Certainly it raised us the keystrokes, which are regularly fairly accelerated in these latitudes. The trouble was that he had to recross to return.

Compare this twilight photo with the evening photo I posted yesterday, and you can see why many consider Heceta Head to be the most beautiful lighthouse on the western U.S. coast.

Heceta’s 8-sided Fresnel lens rotates around the lamp (electric today—kerosene 100 years ago). Until 1934, this rotation was done with a manually operated clockworks. Today, the rotation is powered by an electric motor. One of the eight bull’s-eyes of the lens has just rotated to my camera position. This flash of light happens every 10 seconds—producing a “signature” that mariners recognize as Heceta Head (every lighthouse has it’s own signature). Heceta’s light is the brightest light on the Oregon coast, and it’s British-made lens is the largest of its type in the U.S. The height of the lighthouse (56-feet), which is also midway up a 205-foot-tall headland, helps to insure that the beam will clear the fog that often hovers around the shoreline.
