It is a small deciduous tree growing to 10–15 m tall with a trunk up to 40 cm in diameter, though usually smaller and often with multiple trunks, and a spreading crown of long, arching branches. The bark is smooth, olive-green with regular narrow pale vertical stripes on young trees, eventually becoming dull grey-brown at the base of old trees. The leaves are 6–18 cm long and 4–9 cm broad, with a petiole 3–6 cm long; they are dark green above, paler below, ovate, unlobed or weakly three-lobed, with a serrated margin. They turn to bright yellow, orange or red in the autumn. The flowers are small, yellow, with five sepals and petals about 4 mm long; they are produced on arching to pendulous 7–12 cm racemes in late spring, with male and female flowers on different racemes. The samara nutlets are 7–10 mm long and 4–6 mm broad, with a wing 2–3 cm long and 5 mm broad.

Even though I will be getting my 100Macro in a week - This is a very good way to have a make-shift macro. Just unmount the lens and reverse it and you can focus at about an inch from the subject.

Watermelon on a plate

I wanted to take a colorful summer inspired photo, and got very much inspiration from some of AlexEdg's work. I can't take credit for the creative part of this photo as it is almost a try to recreate one of her photos.

Strobist information:

A white Iittala Nero plate was placed on a white paper (for a bit of fill onto the lower part of the plate). More than a meter away, a light blue A3 paper was set up as a background. One nude (bare) Canon Speedlite 430EX (zoomed to 105mm) was pointed at the corner of the background, to get a bit of a gradient effect. Another Speedlite 430EX with Lastolite EzyBox Hotshoe (60cm) was set up camera left, behind and above the plate to control the shadows on the plate. A last Speedlite 540EZ in a Lastolite Ezybox Hotshoe (60cm) with only the inner diffusion was placed camera right, slightly above and very close to the watermelon/plate. By taking away the outer diffusion material, the harder light showed off the freshness of the watermelon even better. Everything triggered by Elinchrom Skyports, initial metering with Sekonic L-358.

Currently it is the cherry blossom season in Taiwan. But I am not able to shoot it in a wider scope since Taipei has been raining for a week. A lot of flowers fall on the water and became beautiful water reflection. I used flashlight to add on star effects. This is the fun in raining days.

On a visit to a local animal sanctuary this summer, I discovered this tiny little owl. I had been unaware of this species until my visit. This one is an adult that was injured when hit by a vehicle (you can see the damaged wing). He will spend the rest of his life in captivity. This sanctuary does wonderful work helping animals that have been injured or orphaned.
