Little Forget-Me-Not flowers are tiny and are often called Belly Flowers because you have to get down on your belly to really see or photograph them.

Forget-Me-Not

Cryptantha sp.

There are many species of Cryptantha in Anza-Borrego, most of which look just like all the others. Here's a list lifted from www.abdnha.org.

Narrowleaf Cryptantha (Cryptantha angustifolia) — Spreads up to 24 inches. Look for it in sandy to rocky soils especially along roadsides, and in creosote scrub and desert woodland.

C. angustifolia is Anza-Borrego's most common Cryptantha. Harvester ants are fond of the seeds.

Bearded Cryptantha (Cryptantha barbigera) — 4-20 inches.

White-haired Cryptantha (Cryptantha maritima) — 4-12 inches, small white flowers, often with red stems.

Purpleroot Cryptantha (Cryptantha micrantha) — To 6 inches. Roots stain anything they touch a nice violet.

Cryptantha species considered rare or uncommon in Anza-Borrego are:

Ribbed/Ashen Cryptantha, (Cryptantha costata) — 4-8 inches

Gravel Cryptantha (Cryptantha decipiens) — 4-16 inches

Gander's Cryptantha (Cryptantha ganderi) — Annual 4-16 inches

Winged Cryptantha (Cryptantha holoptera) — Annual Upright, 4-20 inches

Nievitas Cryptantha (Cryptantha intermedia) — Annual 4-24 inches. Common in the San Diego County mountains and coastal plains but rare in Anza-Borrego.

Nevada Cryptantha (Cryptantha nevadensis) — 4-24 inches

Single-Wing Cryptantha (Cryptantha pterocarya var. cycloptera) — 4-16 inches

Wing-Nut Cryptantha (Cryptantha pterocarya var. pterocarya) — 4-16 inches

Scented Cryptantha (Cryptantha utahensis) — Fragrantly scented. 4-12 inches. Look for it in the southern desert, possibly near Dos Cabezas Spring.

What was supposed to be recruitment shots for her college turned out to be a ruse. My class is playing Senior Assassination, and I was her friend's target, and she used this as a set up. I locked all the gates, thinking I was safe. As I was taking her shots, her friend came out of nowhere and chased me down. She told me that it was all a setup, despite saying that I could trust her. Despite getting eliminated, and frustrated due to the fact I was taken advantage of after all the volleyball pictures I took of her, and the portraits I did for her for the school newspaper's advice column, I'm happy the picture turned out nice (:

Picture for the MacroMondays theme on May 2nd 2011: Aging.

Do you have any idea about how long can a butterfly live? The average life time of an adult butterfly is around 20 days, though it depends on different species. This beautiful Scarlet grain swallowtail butterfly is an aging one since its wings were broken due to long time of flying or attacked by the spiders. However don't you worry since it still could fly as a normal one.

The Orange Oakleaf or Dead Leaf (Kallima inachus) is a nymphalid butterfly found in tropical Asia from India to Japan. With wings closed, it closely resembles a dry leaf with dark veins and is a spectacular example of camouflage. My previous post is from the bottom and this one is from the top. Lust love its wing reflecting under the sun.
