The Swiss alps in a late September light...

...which shone so intensely that afternoon. The colors of the landscape are already wearing the guise of autumn. The view was as clear as an October morning. Standing there and marveling at this spectacle of light can hardly be compared to anything else. Many thanks dear friends for all the beautiful words on Part 1. I hope you like the second part as well. My first Fuji camera was here in action. This picture is already a few years old and I still chose it because the atmosphere was really unique for me that day and also because my oldest Son advised me to choose this one. I had another one to choose from showing the morning light over the mountains and lake, but for us this one is the right for now. (Maybe I'll post the other one at a later date.)

For both of us, this mountain lake is one of the most beautiful places in our country and we would like to visit it many more times, as long as I have the strength to do so. By the way, this is the high-altitude hike that leads around the lake high up. The mountains in the background are over 3600m high and the lake is at about 1500m over sea level. Here you see a rock face of more than 2000m height. It is sometimes not so safe to hike at this height and so close to the abyss, but it is incredibly beautiful, especially on a day like this when the mountain tops are covered with fresh snow. Thank you for reading my story to the picture and all time you give my little work. It means so much to me and every single word is so appreciated my dear friends.

...yes, I'm coming home to my beloved mountains. It's a part of me and I can't live without theme. I love nature so much. It's something deep in my heart.

Humble and uplifting at the same time, hardly anything in nature inspires as much awe as the sight of mountains.

Climb the mountains and feel the good energy. Peace in nature will flow into you like the sunshine that nourishes the trees. The wind will refresh you, the storm will fill you with power, and all your cares will fall away from you, like autumn leaves.

Hiking is the most perfect way to get around if you want to discover real life. It's the way to freedom.

Some brief announcements -

1) I am having collaborative workshops with Miss Aniela on November 1st and November 6th, and a couple spots are still available! Email me to sign up (info@brookeshaden.com), or check this blog post to read about it! We are both really excited to meet each other, collaborate, and teach.

2) I will be exhibiting at and attending the launch party for Blue Canvas Magazine issue #6 tonight, in which I am a featured artist. They will also be selling calendars which this photo is in. This photo was inspired by that one :)

3) The artists reception for my Laguna Beach show Women on the Verge at the JoAnne Artman Gallery is on Saturday from 1-3, and I'll be there with many flickr friends and other wonderful people.

First, dont forget to click on the photo to watch it at scale 1.

I did this photo of a great tit in a very nice light under trees, but I forgot it on my computer ...

As the foreground of the photo was in the light, the background is very dark and the sky looks so blue.

Then the black things that you can see in foreground are branches (as I did it through branches).

Me, proudly displaying one of the baked goodies I made for Christmas dinner, my bro’ Tom took the photo… ☺

Sally (Just Me) tagged me :-) …. so here are 16 random things about me:

1. I’m a happy person…my glass is almost always ½ full…

2. I was in a big hurry to grow up…I graduated from high school in 3 years and completed my mba when I was 22…I am baffled to this day, why I was in such a hurry…

3. I am a sucker for tweed and paisley

4. I’m a 2nd generation American…. 3 of my 4 grandparents were born abroad (2 in Greek Isles, 1 in Czechoslovakia…)

5. I’ve always loved music…from my earliest memories…my Mom placed our coffee table in front of the tv when I was a toddler as I would dance with total abandon anytime music was played (she was afraid I would crash into the tv ;-P)

6. I suffer from vertigo

7. I love to lose myself in films with amazing cinematography

8. I sometimes get panic attacks when driving on the highway

9. Once I got to sit in the captain’s seat in a DC-10 aircraft for about 30 minutes as it was flying over the rocky mountains to San Francisco (I am not a pilot)…it was fantastic beyond words…

10. In one 10 year period I lived in Memphis-Miami-Singapore-Memphis-Hong Kong-Memphis

11. I like geeky, quirky, obscure…remote…things off the beaten path make me happy

12. People often tell me their secrets…since I was a child…friends, strangers, etc…

13. I find it strangely comforting to be surrounded by people speaking a language I do not understand

14. One of the jobs I was offered out of grad school was to be a lobbyist for a gas pipeline company…I had to decline, as I’m a total tree hugger…

15. I love exploring big cities, but crowds make me nervous (can you believe I lived happily in Hong Kong?)

16. Contrary to what the above shot might imply…. I am far from a kitchen magician. I do enjoy cooking, but in the past, the men in my life did most of the cooking. However, I must admit…. the above pie was pretty de-lish… ☺

New year resolution: to clarify my vision and upgrade my PS skills

Yes, I changed the BG of the shot above.

My son. He kinda looks like me, sometimes ;-P

I should start uploading differently, original is much sharper...

I like the outtake below in comments too, but it does not completely express the resolution i.e. it gained a 2nd place. Anyhow, I adore those colours.

Since I couldn't resist, I then combined both to get the result in the 2nd comment and I have a feeling the last one will end up on his FB as the new profile pic ;-)

The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheatre in Piazza Bra in Verona, Italy built in the first century. It is still in use today and is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances given there. It is one of the best preserved ancient structures of its kind. In ancient times, the arena's capacity was nearly 30,000 people. The stage for concerts and opera performances decreases the available places to a maximum of 15,000.

1. I'm lucky enough to have been born in Scotland and lived there for all of my 54 years.

2. I was a bit of a swot at school and came top in most things, except art. I can't draw to save myself!

3. I studied at Edinburgh University back in the 70s and learned how to stop being a swot and have fun instead. Somehow I managed to come out with a law degree.

4. My dad, in his later years, was a church pastor. Hence my wife insists 'our song' has to be Son of a Preacherman'.

5. I love ice cream!!! Had the best ever in Callander recently - caramel shortcake flavour :) Yummy!!

6. I am a bit of a football fanatic. When there's a game on TV, I am banished upstairs to watch it - as no-one can put up with me shouting at the screen. Even the dogs go into hiding!

7. I love rock music and the blues :) Can't stand jazz or boy bands!

8. Our house has become known as Mid Calder Zoo since we have always had multiple pets plus a few rescues. One of the crows we rescued still lives with us!

9. My favourite holiday destination is Jamaica. It's the only country outside Scotland that I would even consider retiring to.

10. Finally, I am a bit of a sci-fi fan. Really love Dr Who. I've never missed an episode and still watch the repeats. Never hid behind the sofa, though, when the daleks appeared!

All by ; Me

You can thank this Guy for this shot that has absolutely no redeeming qualities but that it shows exactly how I have been feeling of late...a bit fuzzy and out of sorts.

Not to worry though, I'm not tagging anyone else; I think you've all been hit at least once!

So here's everything you always wanted to know about me and more>>>

1. I'm stubborn when I finally dig my heels in about something; but there is usually good cause.

2. Most of the time, I'd just rather do it myself.

3. Being VERY inquisitive by nature, I want to know who, what, when, where and most of all, WHY :)

4. I’ll usually tell you what I think about something if you ask me (and sometimes even if you don’t), but I really am a very private person and seldom share my deepest thoughts and feelings with anyone.

5. The older I become the more I realize just how much I haven’t done and just how short life really is.

6. I am addicted to magazines and have a larger library of decorating , design and jewelry magazines than I do books.

7. I am a "jack of all trades and master of none" because I love to learn SOMEthing about EVERYthing :)

8. I have a very acute sense of smell and, at one point in my life, wanted to be a perfumer or “nose”. I am, in fact, a very sensory person overall.

9, When it comes to food, I am a creature of habit. Once I find something I like at a restaurant, I seldom will order anything different.

10. There are few things more relaxing to me than a roaring fire in the fireplace.

11. Give me a good book and I can take an instant vacation.

12. I LOVE going to the beach; I’m just a warm weather girl.

13. I am a very tidy person and have a very difficult time with clutter or messiness. I am not, thankfully, as OCD as I once was.

14. My grandparents have been gone for years, but I have missed them every day of my life since. They were the most perfect examples of unconditional love I have ever known.

15. Although I am right-handed, I bat and golf left-handed. That could explain why I’m so uncoordinated, you think? ;)

16. I believe that Love is the answer.

In between the Great Lockdowns of 2020, I managed a short family break by the English-Welsh border. One of the highlights was finding Puzzlewood, a superb ancient woodland site that has been transformed by Roman iron ore mine workings into a magical place inhabited by all things supernatural. If it looks familiar to you, that may be because it has been used as a filming location for many big blockbusters... I’ll leave you to find out which.

Being totally overawed by the location, and also lacking a clear plan of what I would do with the resulting photographs, I snapped away until my SD card was groaning with digital indigestion.

I don’t know how many copyright rules I have broken, but during Lockdown II I have been steadily pilfering t’interweb for any image I could mash into my backdrops. I probably owe George Lucas my entire family inheritance and the life of my first-born son by now.

To anyone whose image I have used:

1) I am truly grateful – your picture brought me many happy hours of tinkering around on my PC

2) I am sorry if you do not like me using your image (I will remove it if you request)

3) I did not keep a record of where I got the pics from, so I can’t give you credit (unless you let me know)

4) Please don’t sue me – Herr Lucas is first in the queue and I’m sure he has more better lawyers than you so I will have nothing left, anyway.

We found this really great view at Gamboa Point on Highway No 1. I loved the lonely palm trees at the upper beach. In the background you can see the bridge over the Big Creek Cove.

I actually really love this photo.

i've been tagged multiple times. so here goes.

1. I don't just like indie music. I actually really, really love screamo, and whatever genre 311 falls into. You should all try listening to them one time. Try the song "Waiting" by 311.

2. When I get dressed, I rarely coordinate my outfits. I usually just pick up two things off the floor that I know I like, a top and a bottom, throw them on and hope they match.

3. It kills me when I look back at things I've written and I see that I spelled something completely wrong.

4. I love driving, but I have to share my car with my twin brother. It's my sister's old car, and I rarely drive it without the windows down.

5. I miss writing. I used to write all the time, but I've been lacking because I've been so busy.

6. I hate the computer sometimes. At times, I'd rather just be completely alone, like at the lake on a houseboat. I've never heard a more perfect silence than there.

7. I hate my pictures most of the time.

8. I tend to start projects and never finish them. (I hope I finish my 365.)

9. I am going to a college next year that I didn't particularly want to go to.

10. I hint at things a lot, but hardly say them outright.

oh shit, explore #11

i always hate putting that number but this is kind of a big deal cause i've never gotten past 300.

cooool, thanks, this was seriously just a late-night experimental upload.

Macro Mondays: Edge.

In this shot of the Pacific Tree Frog (Hyla regilla), there are two edges represented.

Edge 1: I was trying to capture the leaf edge to show how thin the support structure was for it's perch, a Blueberry plant; which nevertheless, is sufficiently strong enough to support the frog's small 3/4 - 2 inch frame.

Edge 2: The most important edge of all. Amphibian's populations worldwide are declining rapidly and becoming extinct (approx. 200 sp. to date), due to chytridiomycosis, a fungal infection. The fungus is in British Columbia, and from what data I could gather, the Rough-skin Newts and Western Toads are among those at risk.

The Pacific Tree Frog, so far, has not been affected. This could be due to the fact that the frogs with extra moist skin, who like to sun themselves for longer, kill the fungus on their skin with the sun's heat.

So, this shot, which I darkened the surroundings to represent the impending doom for so many species worldwide, stands for those amphibians hovering on the edge of non-existence.

Please don't use this image on websites, blogs, etc. without my permission.

-------

This was a nice chase along the narrow gauge Weißeritztalbahn on January 15, 1990.

I was traveling with Tilo Reinfried from Mittweida, with whom I stayed for two nights. With him I had a competent passenger because it was my first trip to the GDR by car.

We caught the 99 1771 for the first time at the Malter dam in front of Dippoldiswalde (I haven't worked on the slides yet...).

Then with belching smoke on the slope behind Obercarsdorf and again passing the old Kipsdorf train station.

The locomotive stayed overnight in the picturesque, aged locomotive shed, which is located above the former station building. As far as I know, the shed is still used today. Probably looking better than it did 35 years ago.

Afterwards we went to the Monday demonstration in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Unfortunately, on Tilo's advice, I didn't take a camera with me. With my Canon (albeit an old AV-1) I would have immediately been noticed as a western German. Still, it was unforgettable and impressive to stand in the crowd at the large Marx bust. The socialist intelligence files flew out of the window here at night too, I think so...

1) I am an only child with deceased parents and no children.

2) I am fortunate to have the love of my husband, Frank who I met 25 years ago at a Bunnydrums concert, www.myspace.com/bunnydrums2, lots of friends and cousins and our cats Sailor, Lula and Nancy.

3) By chance I met mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar started my career as a buyer for Eyes Gallery and fell into the rabbit hole that is Philadelphia's Magic Garden.

4) My Blythe family and the Blythe community have made my world a happier place.

5) I like to go "down the shore" (as they say in Philly) and bird watch.

6)A scorpio, I'd enjoy being a private eye/ superhero. Dressed in a Gaultier suit, my manicured nails transforming into daggers, my clutch purse a power pack enabling me to fly. I'd rid the world of anyone who harmed children.

7) I'd like to have breakfast with David Sedaris, lunch with Hanif Kureishi, a pint with Roddy Doyle, dinner with Edith Piaf and a brandy with Alexander McQueen.

8) I entered a Frida Kahlo look a like contest and won. The gift bag included a Hello Kitty massager.

9) I sometimes eat food that is past the expiration date.

10) I will always consider myself a goth.

11)I want to go to London but I want it to be the 80's again-no a/c or cable ,everyone on the dole so they have time to make themselves pretty and practice their guitar-mohawks and body paint at Gossips.

12) I love rebel artists, Tracey Emin, Elizabeth McGrath and Joe Coleman.

13)I can't function without my fountain pen and notebook.

14) I had a story published in Bed New Lesbian Erotica

15) For the first time in my life I am going to wear a t-shirt with the presidents face on it. Go Obama!

16) I once was in the same house as Johnny Depp

It was in 1976 that my sister returned from a holiday in France with the record "Vancouver" by French singer/songwriter Véronique Sanson. That music gripped me and never let me go! My sister's record became my record, I became a super fan, and these songs became part of my very identity! In 1979 I saw Véronique in concert in Düsseldorf (Germany), a definite highlight in my life!

The photo from 1980 shows me with all seven of Véronique's albums at the time. While I no longer have the rest of my record collection, I do still have my Véronique records to this day! It's really pretty amazing because:

1) I haven't owned a record player for several decades now.

2) I've moved a total of 10 times since 1980.

3) I have some of these on CD.

4) I can listen to them on YouTube.

5) I'm a bit of a minimalist with not much furniture and things.

But still ... I just can't let go of these records.

Even after 44 years, it's still a pleasure to handle the large squares of cardboard and look at the familiar pictures. There was a graceful technique required that had to be learned for removing records from their sleeves, flipping sides and gently setting down the needle. Then there followed the slight crackling sound, at which point the heart swelled with anticipation waiting for the first note! Plastic CDs never came close to this experience.

No. I just can't let go of these records!

If you're curious, here is Véronique's song Vancouver on YouTube.

Tints of Autumn Series 🍂 Step 1 - I captured and printed a series of my hands.

Step 2 - After choosing my gear Madalena Lens and Sussex Film in Hipstamatic I started shooting with Hipstamatic multiple exposure kit; first I took a picture of a hand then I shoot an object or texture which reminds autumn.

This is the last step for the first group which contains single hands.

so know I must reveal 16 random things about me. 16?! Really?!?! I feel very self-centered... but I'll pull some outta my ass...

1. I drink too much. I love wine, beer and liqueur (don't shy away from any). I have one drink almost everyday. It's my way to unwind after the kids are in bed. And when I don't have kids... yikes.

2. I consider myself a "Jack of all trades, master of none." When I put my mind to it, I can do pretty much anything. I can rewire an entertainment system, build a computer, sew an outfit, cave dive, cook a gourmet meal, do the east coast swing, catch a large mouth bass... but I don't think I'm really great at any.

3. I have not befriended a women because I was attracted to her. Just as I would a man if I were attracted to him or vice versa. Like the saying goes, "If you play with fire, you're gonna get burnt." That's all I'll say about that.

4. I don't pamper myself. I go months without a hair cut. I don't get manicures or pedicures. I've never had a facial or spa treatment. I don't spend the money or time on myself. I just take care of myself... at home.

5. I love, love, love popcorn. I used to eat an entire bag every day after school. I limit the carbs today, but I will not watch a movie unless I have a bowl of buttery, salty popcorn on my lap.

6. Every time I go on vacation (even for just a weekend) I create a folder. I have to research on the area and have a game plan. I like to know where to go, how to get there and as much information about the place as possible. Anal... I know.

7. I won a Kareoke award a few years ago. It happened to be a song I knew by heart and sing in the shower all the time... so lots of practice. The drinks I had prior helped me to belt it out too. Good times.

8. My parents were very religious when I was young so we were at church often. I used to "speak in tongues", dance and sing my heart out every Sunday.

9. I have notebooks filled with poems, stories and just mind emptying writings. I keep them hidden.

10. There is not one food that I don't like. I love to try new foods and just haven't found one that I don't like. Snails, frog legs, gator tail, oysters... yummy.

11. I am very energetic, rarely serious and always looking for a laugh. I don't like wining, complaining or negativity. I believe life is what you make it. If you speak bad... well then, it's bad. Mind over matter... you can make yourself happy. =)

12. I used to have horrible menstrual cycles (sorry guys). I mean... in bed the first day, throwing up from the pain, shaking... worse than anyone I've known or even heard about. Now I'm on Mirena and haven't had a period in 14 months! Awesome!

13. I used to live in a small trailer in South Carolina out in the middle of nowhere. There were rats and opossums and other horrors all around. Luckily, it was only for about a year.

14. I smashed my middle finger in the door of a '65 Mustang when I was little. The nail came off and eventually I grew another, but it's bigger than the other one. There went my hand modeling career.

15. I am very sarcastic, a smart-ass and critical (in a joking way). I am never mean or hurtful to anyone... purposely.

16. I don't cry. When my girlfriends and I see a sappy movie and they start to cry... I feel bad and awkward. Sometimes I even laugh. I am emotional but not expressive.

This is what happened one day when...

1. I had too much time on my hands

2. I had a hair scrunchy that looked like a mini tutu

3. I had a very sweet and forgiving rat.

The sweet rat in question was Julius.

The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is an inoperative nuclear power plant located on the Pacific coast of California, in the northwestern corner of San Diego County, south of San Clemente. The plant is currently in the initial stages of preparation to be decommissioned after being closed in 2013 following the failure of recently replaced steam generators. Shortly after I took this photo, I was asked, no TOLD to leave the beach! (see San Onofre #1). I used Nik HDR to give the clouds a bit more definition. Happy Sliders Sunday!

Assignment 1

Photo 1

I took this photo about 5 years ago with my Sony RX100 mk1, it was in Tokyo, just before a big storm was coming, this was about 9pm. I like the photo as I like the colours in the lights and the weather makes it kind of moody, but I know it could be better, I could crop out the darker building on the right for example or waited for somewhere with more background lights (the juggler signs aren’t lit). I’d like to get better at photography for this reason, I love photography and have a decent camera now (Sony a6400), but I’ve never really kicked on with it and still sit in auto mode, plus I don’t really know any editing at all (despite paying for lightroom for a year lol).

But this year is the year, eh?

Gonna finish this whole course and see where I’m at after that.

Photo 2

The photo I have chosen is by Liam Wong, he is conveying everything I tried to convey in my photo, but with much more skill lol, I love the moodiness and think he’s captured what I couldn’t that night, he seems to do it with ease tbh, he’s got some great ones in Tokyo.

1. I am thankful for being able to talk with my favourite younger sister twice this past week as it was her birthday and I also had birthday related questions.

2. I am thankful for this video. I found it reading this article here. (NSFW?)

3. I am thankful for finishing the large “cornmunication [sic] Scotopic Sensitivity piece on Monday (cleaned-up Tuesday).

4. I am thankful that the photos for a new project turned out really great for their purpose! I like proving to myself that when you (I) really care about the subject, the percentage of photos that turn out significantly better is significantly increased! :) I am thankful to have people that have inquired at just the right time using just the right words to help me further clarify and move this project forward. I am thankful for notifying some people that I am working on an important project because all of them in their own way are helping me along. One person asked about it which helped me be more clear with my intention and end goals. Many other folks are just standing back to let me do the work AND equally important they gently reminded me to get back to my work when I was talking and not working! :)

5. I am thankful and excited that I have found another way to give my artwork life. I had been nagging (serious nagging!) myself about needing/having to sell the original artwork about a year now but I believe I have found another way to give it life and give me the opportunity to spend quality time with it while I work at letting it have a better home than the big folders hiding at various places around here.

6. I am thankful for an interesting and disturbingly informative article about facebook’s NOprivacy policy, click here to read it. It is making me re-evaluate my fb interactions! This may also explain the crapload of SPAM I began receiving to my email account that is connected with fb.

7. I am thankful for setting a written goal of practising celebrating so that I can learn how!

8. I am thankful for seeing more people write, “you are loved” in various places on the Internet. This is exciting because more people will be reminded and know and it is evidence of more people like me. Examples here, here and here.

9. I am thankful for making a list of steps to complete my nephew’s birthday present on time because now I can see many little steps I can do throughout my day and I even started it. I even took some photos and did some writing about it. I have found that I need to make better notes on what specific colour of pigment and paper I use just in case I need to go back into it to make it look more complete.*

10. I am thankful for Gavin de Becker’s The Gift of Fear because it makes me more aware of my surroundings and notice something surprising that happened while I was in Saskatoon a bit ago. I also found an article on de Becker’s site, you can read about media tactics here.

11. I am thankful for deciding that I am okay with feeling socially awkward simply because I suspect I am not the only one that has ever felt that way. Thankfully I don’t usually recognise how awkward things were until after the fact. It also occurs to me that when I don’t either notice or recognise people and thus don’t acknowledge them right away or at all .. well it takes two to communicate.

12. I am thankful for getting clear on my intention with my photography and taking a few hundred photos over the passed week. I am thankful that my theory of: when you care about your subject the photos will demonstrate that. For instance, when you see a leaf when you are out and about you may not make much notice of it but when you look at these photos you can just tell the person making the photos cares about nature and this plant.

13. Thank you for reading. Enjoy your week and laugh lots .. unless you had other plans!? ;-)

Inspired a bit by Heroes of Might and Magic series. The dragon is more like the one from H2 and his dwelling building is very roughly inspired by general architecture from H5 Necro castle.

This is a bit of a WIP, or maybe stage 1 - I simply ran out of pieces before I had a chance to make a proper ground. On the other hand, this makes for an interesting composition where only the building and the dragon matter.

Light system made with lightmybricks. Again - if anyone wonders if it is worth the price, it absolutely is.

Inspired by Aishia!
